Will be interest to find out what o2 announce in the uk

iphone3g, by idris on Jun 10, 2008 19:29:28 GMT 1, Taken from 'Mac Rumors'
In the wake of Apple's iPhone 3G announcement and AT&T's press release detailing their new agreement with Apple, additional details are surfacing regarding the companies' attempts to reduce the number of customers unlocking their iPhones for use on other carriers.
Gizmodo spoke with AT&T's President of National Distribution Glenn Lurie, who revealed that all iPhone activations will take place in-store. This is in contrast to the current system in which customers may activate their iPhones from home using iTunes. Additionally, Reuters reports that AT&T has said that purchasers who do not activate their iPhones within 30 days will be subject to penalties. No details on these proposed penalties have been made public.

People will buy the handsets at a non-subsidised price anyway so why not just mark them up as such and let them sell to whoever? It's not like the networks SPs need to get their knickers in a twist over the handset activations, they still get the revenue from the customers' contract activations/renewals. The only reason for any of this is publicity imo.

iphone3g, by idris on Jun 10, 2008 19:37:28 GMT 1, it'll be ineresting nevertheless.
I'd happily pay full price for the iphone to use it with my current sim - it dont bother me one bit. The sp's have to protect their investment. I know ppl are shouting 'unfair unfair' but you have to listen to the sp's argument in that to clinch the deal they paid millions in order for the iphone to work with their network on an iphone tariff=revenue. If you want to unlock it - feel free to but, we're gonna penalise you.
Still - keep watching -

I like that blackberry very much, and will throw my piece of shit iphone out of the car window when it hits the market, fuckin apple.

iphone3g, by jonvespa on Jun 11, 2008 4:31:29 GMT 1, the new price is BS, they are adding $10 a month in data fees and now charging for text messeging...they arent getting you in the original phone, they are getting you in fees...
heres a letter my friend sent steve jobs:
Congratulations on another amazing Keynote. I continue to be excited about all of Apple's amazing products. As a loyal Apple consumer I have always appreciated the cutting edge technology that your company offers and am constantly impressed Apple's innovations and fresh ideas. I enjoy using over ten Apple products right now including the new iMac and Macbook Pro.
I was ecstatic today when you began to list all of the amazing new features of the iPhone like 3G and GPS. I was bouncing with joy and began to make arrangements to leave Verizon and my loyal and Blackberry Curve, then I started to calculate my actual costs on top of my early termination fees.
How can you call this phone more affordable when ATT raised data rates $10 a month? Over the life of the two year contract that data increase will cost me $240. As you know, this is $40 more than the 2G price point of $499. Additionally, customers must also purchase an SMS plan now. I think your marketing tag "Twice as fast, half the price", is wrong, deceptive and worthy of ridicule. You are charging less for the phone, and making up for it in increased data costs. I think your decision to do so is dishonest and it has left a bad taste in my mouth.
There are a lot of people holding out on switching from their current carriers because of ATT's poor network reputation. Customers like myself want monthly and overall value in their cellphones and rate plans. I still do not have enough incentive to switch from a great device like the Blackberry which is running on a reliable network. Read the forums, and blogs, I am not alone in my feelings. Win me over, lower your rates to be more competitive than my current subscriber.

iphone3g, by kentkid on Jun 11, 2008 9:57:12 GMT 1, I'm an existing O2 customer, but don't have an iPhone. I'm going to Las Vegas in August and would like to buy the new iPhone3G whilst I'm out there, but do you think an iPhone3G bought in America will work properly back here? Or am I better off just getting one through O2 when they're released here in the UK?

hey Kentkid, some smart 12 year old will hack the new phone within hours of it being released and eventually YOU will be able to hack it. BUT whether you lose the 3g etc I do not know.
The question I would ask is Can you get one when you are there? At that price I know tons of people who will buy it so availability might be the problem. If you are in Vegas and can get one for $200 DO IT and flip it (LOL). I will get one shipped and eventually replace the old model I already have once i am happy it can be hacked properly..

iphone3g, by kentkid on Jun 11, 2008 14:12:14 GMT 1, Thanks for that Marshman.
I just wonder whether financially it would be smarter to get one in Vegas and just get it hacked?
You're right though, availability might well be a bit of an issue. I think the original iPhone pretty much sold out instantly, and with the price drop and improvements, the iPhone3G's likely to be a sell out as well. I'd imagine it will sell out in store and online within days.
Hopefully they will have restocked their supply by August! Like you said, if they're available when I'm out there, it may be just worth getting one, and if it can be succesfully hacked and is fully operational, great. If not, ebay it is!! ;D

obviously dont want it for free...just a clearer picture should have been presented, instead al the news headlines spoke about the newer, cheaper iphone, and made no mention of the higher monthly fees.
i would be happy paying the original amount with a better rate plan for the long term.
i pay $99 a month for unlimited everything for my blackberry through sprint...i guess thats where i will be staying for a bit...too bad sprint is the last to get the new berrys, we JUST got the curve! so lame.
