Southbank Skate Park Closure, by guest2 on Apr 27, 2008 20:26:55 GMT 1, copied below from FPR on the other forum ...I skated at that place every wednesday night religiously for years and still take the kids up there every now and then to have a look.
London Skates Dominate!
___________
I received the message below from a flickr contact (maybe a forum member) yesterday regarding the southbank skatepark.
I personally have spent many hours skating at the southbank in my 'younger' years and have since spent time there watching and photographing the art and skaters. The Southbank feels like a bit of skating/art heritage for me nowdays and it feels wrong to close this area down.
Heres the message I received.
---------------------------------------
Have you heard about the plans to close the skatepark in the undercrofts of the Southbank Centre under the Queen Elizabeth Hall? This is an area that should be of interest to the London graffiti scene as well I think.
A campaign is up and running and there is an online petition that closes on 28 May. It has already gathered 3952 signatures.
Here's the petition link:
petitions.pm.gov.uk/saveSB/
This is their blurb:
"Since the early seventies โthe Undercroftโ (the sheltered area beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Londonโs Southbank) has served as the home of the skateboarding community in the UK. Itโs an open public-space that has brought together thousands of young people, from various backgrounds, over the last 35 years to form a harmonious and positive community. This type of positive and โunorganisedโ activity for young people is very rarely seen elsewhere in the UK todayโฆ However the area is now being rapidly redeveloped and the future of โthe Undercroftโ is uncertain. Already a large part has been partitioned off behind large wooden hoardings. Please join us in petitioning the government to guarantee that the site is: (A) returned to its previous state (allowing the general public and skateboarders open access to the full area), and (B) officially protected and preserved for future generations of the skateboard community to use."
I work at the Twentieth Century Society outside of flickr graff world and put things forward for listing on a regular basis as part of my job. A lot of our work is highly controversial as you can imagine. I think this needs to be listed. If the C20 won't endorse this cause I will do this myself. In any case it would be really great if the graff scene could get behind this. How do you think is the best way to go about this?

Anyone got an ideas over here?

Southbank Skate Park Closure, by Harveyn on Apr 27, 2008 20:35:39 GMT 1, Frankie / FPR. Being based in N Ireland I obviously don't know the place but it sounds like a cool place for like minded people to hang. Signed the petition anyway as ever little bit helps.
As for thoughts get Banksy and co to bomb the area and have the local council list it as protected.

Southbank Skate Park Closure, by eddiedangerous on Apr 27, 2008 21:07:50 GMT 1, the original message was from the missus. she said it was originally given to the skaters, (even the ramps) by the estate wot owned it. now they feel that more stalls could be jammed in there for more revenue. she is currenly working on getting this site listed (which is her job btw!) So fingers crossed!!!
Sign the petition!!!!

Southbank Skate Park Closure, by ABC on Apr 27, 2008 21:58:24 GMT 1, I also used to make the trip up from Kent to skate the Bank, that's if I had not killed myself on Latimer road vert first. It seems a shame to get rid as its a big tourist pull too.

I think I signed a petition to save it around 1988. Tim Leighton Boyce (RAD photographer) was spearheading the campaign at the time.

You are the type of person that has a banksy rat print hanging on your wall and think you are the daddy but you don't have a clue what his point is.

Southbank Skate Park Closure, by vital on Apr 28, 2008 12:13:40 GMT 1, there is a really good 20 minute documentary about this here made by 2 skaters winstan whitter and toby shuall
www.dobedo.co.uk/dbd_viewmedia.php?mId=8
as the film states it would be a massive shame if this was yet another wicked place that just gets turned into 'clone-town' with starbucks etc..it has already happened at the bottom end of southbank and they have closed half of the middle bit where skaters are so the space is already severley limited
make sure you check out the film and sign the petition - this is also a big graf spot so even if you hate skaters at least you could save a legal (ish) graf spot in central london

Southbank Skate Park Closure, by angryboy on Apr 28, 2008 12:39:37 GMT 1, Signed. Had some good skating there in the past and wouldn't mind some more in the future, even if I am getting a tad old for it.

That skatepark has become an integral part of the Southbank, which attracts tourists and good vibes and showcases raw talent and art. If they take that away, they take away part of the soul of Southbank. That's like putting a ban on street performers or the book market
