A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by fdavis138 on Apr 14, 2008 2:14:06 GMT 1, I've been browsing this forum religiously for a few month's now, but have never felt the need to post. The opinions that are conveyed in this forum on numerous subjects pertaining to art I quite enjoy and find useful. I am using my first post to bring up something I find to be hideous and inhuman(even more so than flippers) to your attention. If you find the following as disgusting as I do, please reply and take any action you can. If this has been posted before I apologies, but the more people's eyes the better.
In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death.
For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.
Does it look like art to you?
But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.
It takes a second to help put a stop to animal abuse
sign the petetion to stop this asshole by going to . msplinks. com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3LnBldGl0aW9ub25saW5lLmNvbS9lYTZnay9wZXRpdGlvbi5odG1s
Full disclosure, I am a art lover and a animal rights activist( not necessarily in that order), but I don't think you have to be activist to know this is wrong. This is not spam I would really like to know the opinions of this community. Sorry if my first post is such a bummer.

A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by smuk on Apr 14, 2008 2:36:58 GMT 1, Disgusting...
Now if he had taken a dead dog, chopped it in thirds, and put it in formaldehyde, thats a different story...
All joking aside, animal cruelty is a serious matter and this poor excuse for art is awful. Shame on you Guillermo Vargas Habacuc.

did the dog really die or was it a stunt and he just wanted people to talk and think about it
I of course do not support to kill an animal that way - in case he did.

A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by BME on Apr 14, 2008 3:00:24 GMT 1, I've just done a bit of research into this. According to the artist:
"Recently, I have been criticized for my work titled "Eres lo que lees", which features a dog named Nativity. The purpose of the work was not to cause any type of infliction on the poor, innocent creature, but rather to illustrate a point. In my home city of San Jose, Costa Rica, tens of thousands of stray dogs starve and die of illness each year in the streets and no one pays them a second thought... Now, if you publicly display one of these starving creatures, such as the case with Nativity, it creates a backlash that brings out a big of hypocrisy in all of us."
I take the artists' point but believe that it could have been made in other, equally poignant, ways that didn't involve the slow, painful and public death of the dog.
I would oppose this 'show' regardless, but might be less cynical if I heard that the proceeds which the artist had earned from the exhibition had been donated to a charity that fed and housed abandoned animals.
Sadly, I suspect that this has more to do with self promotion than animal welfare.

I like your idea of feeding the dog quite a bit! I do think that this is art in a sense, in the way that it will raise awareness for the dogs. The artist should have some catch22 to it by donating proceeds from the gallery to dog charity etc..

A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by holden on Apr 14, 2008 4:25:28 GMT 1, Yeah absolutely appalling. However, as otomi said the visitors are equally to blame and the gallery too. Clearly this is somewhat of a cultural difference, as with publicly slaughtering a bull in spain, dead dogs in public in this country are ok, even popular enough to do it again. Do like the interactive view of feeding the poor thing

Check this one out in San Francisco. Absolutely incomprehensible horror - ga0.org/indefenseofanimals/notice-description.tcl?newsletter_id=13109878
People we really need to speak out against this crap.

A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by Daniel Silk on Apr 14, 2008 12:19:23 GMT 1, Im a little worried about this thread to me it looks like spam.
Poster has only made three posts, all on this thread, says he has been on the forum for months when its only been a few weeks. Could this petition have just been set up to collect peoples information and email addresses that could then be forwarded on to anyone?
Dunt like the look of it myself.

A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by fdavis138 on Apr 14, 2008 13:30:33 GMT 1, I swear to you this isn't spam, I check this forum multiple times daily and find myself wasting a extraordinary amount of time sifting through post. I never post because usual it seems my opinion is covered and I am bit lazy. If you have any worries about the petition don't sign it, find another way to take some sort of action. The reason I wanted to post this here is because street art is art to some and vandalism to others, in this case the senseless torture and murder of a dog is art to some and a criminal act to others. When it comes to art, I am as open minded as they come, piss on cross, paint the President blowing the Pope, I don't care. Bad art is painful to the eyes and the sensibility's, but does not actually inflict pain on another living being, that's where I draw the line? Where do you draw the line? I have no ulterior motives for posting other than to bring an injustice to light and to try and start a conversation on art that has something to say other than "is this hype, whats that selling for, whens the new print release, etc....". Banksy uses his art to to address serious issues in a subtle way, a way that leaves an impression on you long after you've walked away. Which art is more powerful, the subtle or the in your face shock? If Beejoir tied an African child pedestal and starved him is that the next evolution of the LV Child, and would it do more to help the situation than previous efforts have? Sorry if this is rambiling but I got to get work. I'll just say I know this forum has become very cynical about many things, this should not be one of them.

A moment of your time please, Art or Torture?, by Guest on Apr 14, 2008 13:39:44 GMT 1, I dont think this is spam for one moment, it sound's like a genuine post highlighting extreme cruelty in the name of art. I for one would like to see the artist be held responsible for such an act, instead of being applauded by elitist art critics.

To contribute to a problem in order to highlight it and reduce it - idiot. I don't believe in torture, but I won't torture someone to highlight the problem. This artist is a warped, deluded p*ick - he deserves a slap.
