Any computer techies out there?, by rrrich on Apr 11, 2008 8:58:34 GMT 1, yeh it shouldnt be difficult at all to get the info off your hard drive provided it isn't all that knackered. ive done serious damage to a laptop before and had everything recovered so dont worry yet.
agree on PC world, theyll charge you a fortune for crap service. just look up a local computer store and take it down there and ask. be sure they seem decent as they often back up onto their own computers and 'forget' to delete everything once it's been transferred to a new hard drive. may be worth getting a usb portable hard drive and asking them to stick everything on there.

Any computer techies out there?, by gaga on Apr 11, 2008 9:01:26 GMT 1, Before you take the hard drive out have youtried removing all of the peripherals from the system and rebooting? Sometimes that can sort the problem. If not then it should be easy enough to remount the hard drive in a new system. Alex gaga printhouse www.gagaprinthouse.com

Any computer techies out there?, by dotdot on Apr 11, 2008 9:19:58 GMT 1, is it a laptop or a desktop ?
either way if it's dead - you can get the disk out and get the data off.
but as was detailed earlier.
inplug all peripherals - then retry
and or
boot into safe mode.
longer term - think about jettisoning windows or backing up to usb regular like.
and if you want safety think about using encryption on usb - all easy stuff.

Any computer techies out there?, by discoduster on Apr 11, 2008 9:26:59 GMT 1, I had a similar problem a while back and the (ex) missus found a nationwide firm online that came out for a small charge ยฃ15 i think and repaired it under 10 minutes without charging any extra.
Was so pleased I even gave him a 20 and let him keep the change. (It rained later that day! ;D)

Any computer techies out there?, by ashman on Apr 11, 2008 9:34:10 GMT 1, I have tried a safe reboot AND a "last settings that worked reboot"
What was the name of this nationwide firm? As I might be giving them a shout.

Any computer techies out there?, by jynormous on Apr 11, 2008 10:24:05 GMT 1, My pc has died and wont boot up. It just gets stuck on the loading screen. I get the feeling my harddrive has become corrupt and/or it's lost system files. I dont have the windows disk so I wont be able to recover it from there. Is it possible that I can take the hardrive out of the pc, get another pc, and add the harddrive as a secondary disk? Would that work? Will I be able to recover my fileswork, 4 year of photos, and copious amounts of porno?
It sure is possible. Just make sure you set the jumpers on that HDD to slave, or leave it on auto and do it in the new computers BIOS.
That said, this will allow you to recover any data from the drive, but may not allow you to actually fix the problem that is stopping it from booting into windows.
Do you have the XP cd? If so you will find that most of them are bootable, so put that in, set it to boot from the CR-ROM drive in the BIOS and try booting up into safe mode that way.
If you can get into windows, try a system restore. Its located in Accesories->system tools. This will more often than not fix any problems you have booting wise, unless you get a non-system disk found error.
I guess they are your two choices. If you go with the first option, you can get your data but will have to more than likely get a new HDD and install windows again, which is a bit OTT.
I would try the boot method first, either by the XP cd or by getting a floppy off a mate.
Cheers, Jy.

Any computer techies out there?, by danvnuk on Apr 11, 2008 10:51:44 GMT 1, same thing happened to me once - If I remember the boot sector on my HD became corrupted - If I remember rightly, I ended up having to re-install xp and then used some free software to recover my photos etc and copied them to disk - I then had to format the drive.
Hmmmm - well, at least - I think thats what I did - all I know was I was I was tearing my hair out and muddled though it enough to get my data off.
So don't worry - you should be able to recover your photos and pr0n.

Any computer techies out there?, by danvnuk on Apr 11, 2008 11:39:53 GMT 1, no - I remember what I did - I physically took the drive out - and connected it to another PC as a slave drive. I then installed some free software from the net (cant remember what it was called now) to recover the photos from the buggered drive.
When I was finished - I put the drive back in the old PC and formatted then re-installed XP.
What a complete pain in the arse.
Oh - and some of the photos were unrecoverable - I got most of them.

Any computer techies out there?, by Fearkiller on Apr 17, 2008 13:09:10 GMT 1, morning,
It isnยดt a problem to get your data back: try a data recovery firm (not really cheap but hey for getting back your pron collection ) eg: www.retrodata.co.uk/
and no they wonยดt publish your data or send it to the officials.
greetz

Any computer techies out there?, by rosstierney on Apr 17, 2008 13:16:19 GMT 1, a computer techie once told to me, no matter how corrupt or damaged a hard drive, there's always a way to recover the data depending on how much it's worth to you
there are people out there so don't give up, look beyond the high street
