Another Art theft, by manchestermike on Mar 17, 2008 17:07:11 GMT 1, Greetings everyone,
It is with deep regret that we issue this announcement regarding a second incidence of theft at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. On Saturday, March 8th at approximately 4:45pm, another original drawing by Lori Earley was stolen off the wall of her current solo exhibition, Fade to Gray. This comes only one week after the first occurrence of theft the gallery has ever experienced (also a Lori Earley drawing) which happened on Wednesday, February 27th at approximately 5pm. We are releasing this as our official public announcement to alert our clients, collectors, and friends, of the incidentโspreading awareness in the hopes that someone comes forward with information leading to the whereabouts of one or both of the missing pieces.
The first stolen drawing was Untitled. Itโs unframed dimensions were 10"H x 8"W, and when stolen, it was in an elaborate white frame, measuring 16"H x 14"W with about a 3โ depth. The second stolen drawing Awaiting was a bit larger than the first. The unframed dimensions were 16โH x 12โW, and when stolen, it was also in a white frame measuring 22.5โH x 18.5โW with about a 3โ depth. We have included photos of both drawings in question, for your reference and identification.
Both the gallery and the artist are extremely upset and disappointed by these thefts. We are still quite shocked that someone would brazenly steal from us in the middle of the day, and quite embarrassed by the fact that it happened not only once, but twice. We apologize to anyone planning on seeing the exhibition (which is up through March 22, 2008) who will experience the show without these missing pieces.
Please be assured that we are doing everything in our power to protect our artists and their works and prevent any possibility of this occurring again in the future. As a precaution, extra security measures were taken and put into effect immediately following the first incident. We have since implemented additional measures following the second theft, and authorities are conducting further investigation on this ongoing case. For the time being, our doors will remain locked, and all visitors to the gallery must ring our doorbell to be let in.
We have a description of the suspect(s) and are currently working with police to try to identify him. Our first incident coincided with reports of additional robberies that occurred in galleries on the 4th and 2nd floors of our building, within the same time period. A man fitting the same description was seen in all three galleries, just moments before each robbery occurred. All reports confirm that the suspect in question is a white male, approximately 6โ2โ tall, in his mid-to-late thirties. He was seen wearing a blue baseball hat with a navy blue backpack, and he spoke with a very heavy New York accent.
We would greatly appreciate any help you might have with finding the missing works. If you or anyone you know has information as to who might have committed these thefts or leads on possible location of the stolen drawings, please contact the gallery immediately at (212) 243-3822 or info@jonathanlevinegallery.
We are offering a reward for their return. We greatly appreciate your attention and cooperation regarding this matter.
Thank you, Jonathan LeVine

Another Art theft, by Guest on Mar 17, 2008 17:54:12 GMT 1, WOW! ...just WOW!!!
I know how much Lori puts into each one of these pieces, so for someone to steal them is like stealing someone's soul. I don't think they could ever realize the depths of their actions... How horrible!
I hope she gets them back so they can end up in the right hands.

Nowt wrong with that idea Mike..
Those pieces are beautiful, whoever stole them will eventually come to justice I think, lets hope the pieces are intact.

Another Art theft, by sahoria on Mar 17, 2008 19:52:31 GMT 1, totally agree mike sent across email about technology i use for my company rfid. simple very cheap and with antennas put in specific spots can tell if there is any slight movement of the frames... will not damage the artwork neither.... i cant believe someone would do this... something that has really surprised me and hope the more people use the forums and spread the word that these pieces will soon be found. lori earley must be very upset by this and for the fans of her artwork aswell...
i hope soon that they are recovered and are not damaged in anyway... for it to happen twice in little over a week surprises me...s

Another Art theft, by Cocteau 101 on Mar 18, 2008 0:39:13 GMT 1, Sahoria just spotted your post - the answer tag with an RFID tag. I'm an infosec consultant - these are cheap and quite effective and can be strategically so that any attempt to remove will damage the artwork.

Another Art theft, by sahoria on Mar 18, 2008 0:48:15 GMT 1, that is very true...we have been following rfid for a while now and have done some pilots across the uk. ours was more for asset management but can easily be applied to galleries...have contacted a few about it before who are going through our proposals at present... they are very cheap and cost effective and all it needs is someone with reader or computer screen and if something gets moved will update and then they can send someone across.
recently went to show in germany where they was showcasing tracking and there are few systems that are opened sourced so people are constantly updating and releasing newer versions.
for asset management it is the way to go and really for galleries is more cheaper than cctv. offering the screw cameras also so that people who go near the frame will be seen aswell...if nothing gets taken then obviously the data will be deleted.
i think from personal experience of these scenarios that obviously it was more than one person involved but that doesnt take away from the fact that piece of artwork has been stolen. i can personally see rfid being used instead of barcodes in the next 2-4 years especially for courier services.
the chips can be heat sensitive also and sound alarm themselves once taken of the wall... it is a shame as i have said and many others about what has happened... i am guessing team of two to take of the actual art piece while others misdirected ...utter shame as it is beautiful art piece and feel so sorry for the artist aswell as the gallery....s
