Stencils!! Please Help!!, by Michael Jacob on Feb 9, 2008 14:04:02 GMT 1, i dont know if this is correct or not, but this is what I do. I spray the back of my stencil with a respositionable adhesive. I left it try for a couple of minutes until it becomes tacky. I put it on my paper and pat it down a bit. I remove it right after I spray.
It also sounds like you might be applying to much paint?
Lastly, Ive never strayed a stencil on canvas. Canvas has texture, so Im not sure if thats making the problem worse. Make sure to spray straight at the canvas and not at an angle.
Good luck!

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by orangematt on Feb 9, 2008 14:38:20 GMT 1, :/
No dispespect but - its all about time invested in practice , trial and error , learning through your mistakes etc So you ruined three canvases !! practice first ... i am sure every artist at work has 'ruined' plenty of materials to arrive at the final product !! i know i have and do !
Honestly man , do your research , learn on your own - its the only way :/
You never know you may arrive at a style , technique or product that hasnt been done before - making your work unique !
I wish you the best,
:/

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by Martin Whatson on Feb 9, 2008 15:27:55 GMT 1, Have you waited untill the paint dries up? That might be a good start. but as SPQR said. Its a trial and error thing. Youll get there, just dont hurry to paint canvases to sell done fast.

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by Grafter on Feb 9, 2008 15:43:19 GMT 1, What kind of paint are you using..? Belton tends to be kind of runny and it's really hard not to leave trails when removing the stencil. Montana is a more powdery paint and virtually dries as it hits the canvas. I'd recommend you use Montana as a beginner, it's just a lot easier to work with.
Don't try to spray the whole stencil at once. Do bits at a time and use something like a pencil or the handle of a spoon to press down on the edge of the stencil against the canvas as you spray to reduce underspray.
What kind of material are you using for your stencil...? The best stuff i've found is the pre-oiled card. It's tougher than most card and the oil helps prevent the paint from seeping into the card and destroying it. It may also help if you wipe the excess paint off the card each time you use it. You need to make sure you keep it as flat as possible at ALL times. But be aware that all stencils do have a limited life span.
Got to underline what's been said already though, the best way to learn is to keep trying.

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by seidbereit on Feb 9, 2008 15:56:29 GMT 1, I'm guessing purely based on a rough idea of whatthe principles of gravity say, but if you put the canvas flat on the ground and paint it flat I would assume the paint won't run. You may want to try this by canvas 11 at the latest.

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by eskay101 on Feb 9, 2008 16:07:20 GMT 1, what you want to do is, use laminate sheets for cutting stencils (up to a3)....you might have to invest in a laminating machine (i got an A3 on from staples for about 50 notes...pavo was the make)
and invest in a couple of cans of 3M photo mount spray (repositionable...its comes in a blue can)
once you cut your stencil, lighly spray the back of the laminate, wait a few seconds to tack off, then lightly spray again , place on canvas, and weight it down (i use some washers , stones ..whatevers heavy and to hand.....spray paint lightly and evenly (dont try to spray solid color all at once).....wait till paint is dry and lift stencil off........then fully dry with a hair dryer
hope that helps

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by m@san on Feb 9, 2008 20:17:42 GMT 1, If the paint is seeping across the canvas there are probably a few reasons: You're using too much paint and you need a fast drying paint like Montana Gold which has a higher acetone content than Belton Molotow or Monster.
Try spraying inwards from the outside of the stencil rather than from the centre as this will stop the stencil lifting when you spray. Use short blasts little and often.
Make sure you that you're using a fine cap as this will give better control over where the paint goes.
Waxed manilla card or acetate will make much more durable stencils than plain card. Make a cardboard frame for the back of the stencil, this will weigh the edges down more evenly and prevent the stencil from stretching or skewing and if you use thick card it will make it easier to lift if you are spraying flat.
Don't rush ! You can buy cheap canvases from your local 99p store buy a load and experiment before you ruin expensive canvases.
If you make a mistake just spray over and start again, even the old masters recycled their canvases!!

Jed - Listen to this man. He is producing some seriously good stencil work and to try and do this after you have sold the image to people who saw the first stencil I would say is ill advised.

Stencils!! Please Help!!, by Ripper1331 on Feb 9, 2008 21:09:40 GMT 1, From your description you are using too much paint, not letting it dry long enough between layers and waiting too long to remove the stencil rom the canvas.
The card will work fine for about 50 or so uses but you have to let the stencil dry before using it again.
You need to learn can control, what type of cap and what type of paint is right for you are doing so prepare to ruin a lot more things before you get the process down.
