On receiving a print..., by hlarmy on Dec 20, 2007 17:48:25 GMT 1, Basically, I'm relatively new to buying prints but have more than a handful that I have ordered (from all over the world) that are waiting to be framed. I was therefore wondering whether keeping them in the tube is a bad idea in terms of preserving the colours, quality etc.
What does everyone do when they first receive a print?
Or should I say, what should you do to protect it from the elements? ie. remove it from the tube, let it flatten out etc. Can anyone recommend a good make of art portfolios?
Thanks

On receiving a print..., by bill on Dec 20, 2007 17:50:52 GMT 1, Yeah, you want to store them as flat as possible because they will hold their form if left in a tube for a long period of time. I typically pull it out of the tube very carefully and then put it into a acid free sleeve and store it in my portfolio until I have the cash to frame it.

Good answer - thanks. Which art portfolio do you use - can you recommend a certain make and what do I need to look for in an art portfolio??

On receiving a print..., by robo on Dec 20, 2007 18:41:03 GMT 1, I buy portfolios from Atlantic near Aldgate. They also do acid-free plastic sleeves and acid-free mountboard - so you put the print in the sleeve, with mountboard to keep it rigid. Finally (Banksy Stop&Search-esque detail), I use cotton gloves from the same supplier when handling the prints.

On receiving a print..., by Jef Aerosol on Dec 21, 2007 0:07:04 GMT 1, cotton gloves ? ? ? are you kidding ? I just can't believe that ! I would never imagine pieces of paper could be sacralized that much ! I'm impressed... Will some people hold my works with cotton gloves some day ? That would be something ! Nope... that would be too "medical" It's only art, guys !

I use cotton gloves too - as soon as I have my first print from you I will handle it with cotton gloves. It is part of the fun. I use museum boxes. I don't like the portfolio idea - plastic touching the print - I don't know. I also have those small canisters to control the moisture in the box. Now I need some really valuable pints.

I always use cotton gloves, there's a pair hooked on the the ring binders inside each of my portfolios and I have 6 of them! ;D
Whenever I see photos on ebay where you can see people's BARE fingers holding down prints or pointing at blind stamps (FFS!!) I usually feel a little ill. Doesn't matter who the print is by or how much it's "worth"

I started working on the street and using spraycans and stencils etc.. precisely to fight this ! I believe in art you can touch ! I believe in things you can live with like ordinary everyday life objects !

On receiving a print..., by Jef Aerosol on Dec 21, 2007 1:20:07 GMT 1, what i hated in museums when i was a kid was the fact you couldn't touch, you couldn't run, shout... those places were like temples ! or like graveyards of culture ! I thought : let's do some cheap pictures for everybody to enjoy, let's work on the street, let's use cardboard and walls and found stuff, let's share and touch, let's make the touchers and viewers the artists too... Let's get rid of the "art mass" !

On receiving a print..., by Jef Aerosol on Dec 21, 2007 1:22:01 GMT 1, I have lots of posters on my walls, old concert posters with drawings on them, and stains, and torn angles, and signatures by fellow artists and musicians, I pin them, and unpin and repin them ! they are alive ! they have lotsa holes in the corners... They aren't dead things that I touch with gloves...
I "worship" old photos, torn magazines and vintage vinyl records the same way as paintings or posters or prints or any old drawing given to me by a friend... I sometimes buy a cheap frame or just pin directly on the wall... always makes me smile when i read threads about "acid-free" glass etc... Not my planet at all !
but, mind you, i don't judge ! All tastes....

I guess people just have different ideas about that things mean to them and how much care they feel they should get Some people care about a piece so much they lock it away in a bank vault and others want to carry it around with them everywhere so they can enjoy it whenever they like I guess you could compare it to classic cars Do you drive it in the rain? do you drive it as an everyday car? do you have a special cover to keep it clean

On receiving a print..., by bullet on Dec 21, 2007 1:34:29 GMT 1, lets be honest jef, i think that its going to be handled with cotton gloves if there is money involved. This is what makes the world go round.
Its s**t i know, but as long as these things are worth ยฃ2,500 or more people will be scared of damaging them. If a print was worth ยฃ50 you probably would not bother.
I like the character of stuff (especially with stains) which has been roughed up a bit so to speak, but those sort of things are momentos and memories of things. Where as a banksy for instance is probably an investment. Alot of people will say otherwise but they are in denial to be frank! and if you disagree, handle your prints without gloves then and dont use expensive museum frames - just get an ikea one.

On receiving a print..., by Jef Aerosol on Dec 21, 2007 1:51:21 GMT 1, ikea frames are the ones I use ! And I don't really see art as an investment ! My conception is quite different ! For me art is more a way of being happier... I believe art should be something ordinary, something that can help us live... I don't make a real difference between my good old record covers and a print or a canvas... They are pictures, they move me, they remind me of sensations and emotions... and about cars : I only use one because it's handy when i have stuff to carry from a point to another, but my car sleeps outside and is all dirty (a garbage bin on wheels ! lol !)...

On receiving a print..., by Jef Aerosol on Dec 21, 2007 1:56:47 GMT 1, I have records in my collection that are worth a lot of money : collector's items... But I never bought a record more than 5 or 10 pounds... (flea markets mostly)... I don't care more about those and don't protect them more and would never re-sell them to make profit and certainly don't see them as an "investment" of any kind ! The ones that are the "dearest" are the ones I cherish because they speak to me, they call forth old memories, they give me happiness or make me blue when i need to feel blue !
This is why I don't understand why some people spend so much on prints... When a print reaches more than, say, 500 pounds, it becomes crazy ! I'd rather photocopy it then and pin it on my wall !
Now, maybe you'll copy this post and bring it under my nose when my prints reach this price ! lol !!! Honestly, I'd love to sell many prints and paintings and really wish i did, but would hate the people to spend insane amounts of money to get them... many pieces at decent prices is better than few at crazy prices... !

On receiving a print..., by otomi on Dec 21, 2007 2:09:20 GMT 1, Hey Jef,
I get your point. I started buying prints from street artist to support them in what they are doing because I enjoyed there stuff on the street. Didn't really care much about what I bought just wanted to help them. In my neighborhood they had small stands on the flea markets etc. I also drive my 37 year old car everyday because it is too much fun to have in a garage. If it comes to art I treat it well so it lasts for a long time. I want to have it with me for a long time. About museums I think they do exactly what you try to do. make them available for everyone. That was the idea 200 years ago when people opened museums they wanted the art out of the palaces for everyone accessible. If everyone would touch them there wouldn't be much around to look at. Like the Starry Night looks awesome in person and it only works as an original. Never understood what the buzz was about looking at reprints. So I do see the point of museums. I also love the idea of street art. The interaction with the surrounding, people, other street artist and pieces getting older. That is a very exciting new thing but a Swoon piece is just to expensive to pin it to the wall and I have seen what not archival material does to prints after 10 years. Collection prints is an obsession. And because many people pay a lot of money for street art enables those artists to do there thing. I'm not a fan of the crazy prizes and that artists stop doing street stuff but that comes with it I guess but I don't have to support those artists anymore.

On receiving a print..., by Jef Aerosol on Dec 21, 2007 2:14:43 GMT 1, Otomi, I do agree with you on everything ! In fact, i always tend to be a bit extreme in my statements... It's a way of getting the right balance ! Of course, I now myself visit loads of museums and agree on what you say about them... But I always have that old tendency of pushing some of my ideas to their extreme... You see, I'm nearly 51 and still have those rebel instincts I acquired in my hippie years first and then in the punk ones ! lol ! And who's gonna say those things here if i don't ! hehehe !

On receiving a print..., by otomi on Dec 21, 2007 2:22:56 GMT 1, I wouldn't have thought that I would be a flaming defender of museums and cotton gloves but I guess I like to argue. I do love them thou - both. Art is not an investment to me. I have never sold a piece but I want to conserve it. It is a little ritual to put on my gloves and go thru my prints. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Keep on rocking! I'm glad you stick with your ideals. Maybe your the next in my collection.

do a search of the baord over the last 60 days, this has been covered already, with varying replies from people that don't post here anymore - some use portfolios, some have acid free board under their bed I'm sure you'll find one that suits you
Basically, I'm relatively new to buying prints but have more than a handful that I have ordered (from all over the world) that are waiting to be framed. On receiving a print..., by G-Man on Dec 21, 2007 12:07:56 GMT 1, My God ! Would never have imagined such things ! Makes me feel quite uncomfortable : I don't sacralize things this way at all... I started working on the street and using spraycans and stencils etc.. precisely to fight this ! I believe in art you can touch ! I believe in things you can live with like ordinary everyday life objects !
Hear Hear
Its there to be loved not made untouchable!!!
Bare sweaty hands for me I'm Afraid!!
Peace
