Buying Prints!, by phoenixlune on Dec 16, 2007 18:19:44 GMT 1, Hi Guys, just a quick question!
How many prints do you buy each year? Cause i cant beleive how quickly that these SG prins have gone! I only buy 2-3 all year, but it seems that people may be buying 10+! i mean prints for yourself, i.e. not to flip?
Ho much of your income does it represent! as it people are dropping ยฃ1000+ at SG, you boys and girls must be on a fair bit...or are you eating TESCOs blue brand stuff ll year to save money!
This is a posting as there has been no activity on SG in 2 days!!!!

Buying Prints!, by leehambly on Dec 16, 2007 18:50:55 GMT 1, Don't know if I am representative... I live in a 2 up, 1 and a bit down, I have space for about 20 prints (some are strange spaces but due to print size could be used, depends on the print)... over the last two years have bought about 15 or so. One is in the tube and will probably remain that way for a while (it just doesnt fit - was bought very cheap from a flipper and thats that, it isnt sold out so will remain where it is for the moment - would look good in a child's nursery, but I dont have a child or a nursery at the moment!), have bought 3 or 4 as presents for friends and family... and with the remaining spaces left in the house, I either have them earmarked for future works, or am waiting on print arrivals or framing to occur.
So, over the course of the last two years, have spent somewhere in the region of, err, ยฃ2000 (colour trolley being the biggest outlay by a long, long way) with maybe as much as another ยฃ600 on framing (its more than this, but scared to think too hard about it, probably a ยฃ1000)... have recouped about ยฃ1200 in bits and pieces, but nothing bought purely to sell... and if I were to continue to buy at the rate I have done, then I would need to pass some things on or start storing some, which is something I'm not keen on doing... so probably have another 4 purchases after SG until I wind it right down to merely refreshing the odd piece every now and then.
Do a fairly average income job for a graduate in their 30's, not outstanding but can afford to live on my own in my own home... have bought a pair of "not-special" LucyM's on SG so far... will only dip in again this year for a Banksy or a Hewlett, possibly the Insect (Pinocchio one) if the price is right. I shop at Waitrose, waist measurement is 32", inside leg about the same... my avatar is surprisingly accurate. Added: mortgage is only debt, dont own a credit card.

Buying Prints!, by Wiseblood on Dec 16, 2007 19:02:09 GMT 1, i buy what i like and what i can afford, if only one print i like comes out in a year then ill only buy that one, if 20+ come out i like and i can afford it then ill buy them. Im not in debt from it and unless its something special then ill try my hardest not to be. I earn more than my mam but less than my dad, i havnt bought anything from the ghetto yet, i try not to spend money on things around winter as id rather spend it on snowboarding hols instead, which is and always will be my number 1 priority.

Buying Prints!, by partypooper on Dec 16, 2007 19:08:34 GMT 1, I think a lot of people buy/sell on the side to upgrade their collections. While flipping is negatively viewed on these forums, everyone does it. Don't' let some of the comments fool you.

Buying Prints!, by illings on Dec 16, 2007 20:33:24 GMT 1, I have bought everything I own this year... spent a whopping 1800 on a Micallef (jeez, I hope the prices come back in the next 6 months!), bought everything else from POW/SG (Lucy Mc Forest, Bast Glitter, Banksy Colour Trolleys, Insect Silver Sid) and also just got an original street piece by Neate. I'm only in debt cos of the Neate, other than that, I own everything.... even own 2 bed semi home and motorbike on my own, which aint bad for a 30 yr old I guess. I do admint, I have bought things to flip... (here comes a few negs from someone), but who cares, there's money to be made easily!

Buying Prints!, by Nicone on Dec 16, 2007 23:10:34 GMT 1, It's a new passion to me, so I'm new at this. I've bought 5 this year (one PureEvil, one Mode2, one Andre, one Dolk and one Cauty, but I miss the trolleys so I don't have any Banksy)

I don't flip. I've never sold a print so not sure how you can say I'm a liar or delusional. Unless I'm missing your point, which is quite possible
Normally buy 3-4 prints/originals in a year, but close to double figures this year mainly due to having time and money. Next year will be back to normal levels.

BONGO LIKE THE REFERENCE TO TESCO BLUE LINE
BONGO THINKS YOU SHOULD ONLY BUY WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD AND LIKE AND NOT DWELL ON PROSPECTIVE MONETARY VALUE OF COLLECTION
ALTHOUGH HAVING AUTHORISED IMAGE ON WALL MAY MAKE OWNER FEEL PROUD, BONGO THINKS THAT THE ICONIC IMAGE ITSELF IS THE FUNDAMENTAL YOU SHOULD NOT LOSE TRACK OF, IT IS SOMETIMES THE CASE THAT MARKET VALUE BEGINS TO CREEP INTO SOME PEOPLES ASSAY OF IMAGES WORTH
IN BONGOS HUMBLE OPINION, THIS UNCOMFORTABLE JUXTAPOSITION OF ARTISTIC AND MATERIAL WORTH CAN LEAD TO A SENSORY DEVALUATION OF THE PIECE ITSELF

Buying Prints!, by funster on Dec 16, 2007 23:59:41 GMT 1, This year has been my first year of collecting and I've managed to get around 30 prints, 5 originals and a few other bits and pieces. I've only bought what I've liked and am really proud of my collection.
Just 30 mins ago in the pub while doing our "2008 Aims" my wife has told me that the art buying is over for me and we're having kids instead (February apparently) Having heard why Rupert couldn't make the awards on Friday night it doesn't fill me with a warm goey feeling
(p.s - no rude comments about being filled with warm goey feelings )

Don't understand the sentiment. Banksy hasn't made ยฃ250,000! It's all going to charity if you read the Santas Ghetto pages. If people have the cash flow to buy the 2 prints, why not? They can buy whatever they like.

Buying Prints!, by robart on Dec 17, 2007 19:15:45 GMT 1, I have just started art collecting and I am buying 3-5 prints a month. Although this week I have bought 3 prints so its not a great indication. I just buy prints when I like them and as long as I can afford them.
