Prints or originals, by leehambly on Dec 12, 2007 15:55:42 GMT 1, little bit of a mixture of not being able to afford the original and also (and I'm only guessing here since I dont have any that are worth anything, only ones by friends) but if I did managed to get an original I would be so damned scared of damaging it, not only for the value but out of respect to the artist... I know I would have paid for it, but if something were to happen to it and it were a good one off I would be so ashamed to have scratched it or put my foot through it, or tripped and splashed a cup of coffee over it... I'm not a totally bumbling idiot, but when the phone goes before 10am, the cat knows to hide.

Prints or originals, by corblimeylimey on Dec 12, 2007 16:18:22 GMT 1, I'm happy with either, but of course IMO it's better to have an original, but for most artists eg Blek Le Rat and Banksy the originals are way out of my league, so prints will be just fine. I've bought originals off Copyright, Rene Gagnon, SPQR, Martin Whatson & Ripper for less than a lot of prints cost.

Prints or originals, by jfury on Dec 12, 2007 16:26:28 GMT 1, I prefer originals for all the obvious reasons but I would say the break point would be be £5K by that I mean I would rather buy an original for £5K than a print (Banky's included).
If you would have said this a year ago the answer would not be the same but since joining Banksy.info I have found so many more artists I never heard of which has led me down the original route. So far I have luckily be able to purchase a Swoon, Denning, Beejoir, Jos VAN UIJTREGT and Hutch one off Originals. Where previosuly I would have gone down the Banksy print route, unfortuantly early in the year before I joined a CND cost me £5.5K when now they are £4K!
Also I would sell a number of these if a better/more desirable original came along...I currently have my eye on something but it may well be just out of my league plus I will have to sacrafice some of my current collection. I guess it depends on availability/image and price as to which route I go down but like many of you I do have a bit of addiction so buying prints rather than originals is a cheaper alternative!!!!

Blimey!
My limit on any art is about £500, I've spent that on a Banksy print, on the other hand I've had good prints for as little as £35 and I've bought originals within the same price range, my most expensive original is this by AMP
And the cheapest this by SPQR (only £15 inc delivery! )

By that I dont mean thats all I buy! - this year I have spent £25.00 on a print (Faile Captivate a superb print) and upwards, If I wanted something special I would probably rather by an Original than a Banksy is what I mean!!!

Prints or originals, by tomjedimaster on Dec 12, 2007 17:02:54 GMT 1, at last count i had approximately four dozen prints but only have a dozen of these up around the house. my wife has stopped me from buying anymore prints and has forced me to only concentrate on buying originals. when i stand back and think about my very young collection, the only pieces that i have any attachment to are the originals.
the problem that i now have with prints is that they are mass produced and usually not printed by the artist, and in some cases not even signed! originals have a level of emotion and personal touches by the artist. sometimes this only becomes apparent the longer you look at the features and textures as well as through discussions with the artists. where prints to me are generally flat.
mind you, i'm just in the middle of rolling up my set of dead cows for my brother for christmas, and they rock!

Prints or originals, by funster on Dec 12, 2007 17:51:47 GMT 1, I find it really hard to find good originals, especially at an okay price. At the beginning of the year £300 would be my max on any art purchase, then it went up a bit to get a signed Applause, then I went into Elms by accident and it went horribly wrong from there on! As an alternative I'd definately recommend hand finished prints such as McAttee (and others), you still get some textures, they're easy to frame and not the priciest of everything - and because they're hand finished the print run is usually small

Prints or originals, by tmccarthy41 on Dec 13, 2007 2:23:43 GMT 1, If I had lotsa money I would prefer originals!
If I come across an artist I really like, who is new (or new to me) to the game I always e-mail them and ask them how much for commission pieces.
I just contracted Justin Myer Staller (http://www.tinymediaempire.com/justinmyer/) for a piece of his work. Check his stuff out, its interesting.
