The Artistic Process, by Daniel Silk on Nov 22, 2007 19:05:38 GMT 1, An new thread idea! ;D
This thread is for Artists to tell us about and post photos of the different stages in the process of making a piece of art ;D
How they progress with the first designs? How do they make the printing screens?
Plus everyone can ask them questions ;D

The Artistic Process, by stradled on Nov 23, 2007 13:44:16 GMT 1, Thanks a lot for them static, I would be interested to know more about the gold leaf process.
You add it and its rough, then you remove it and its neat but how it still there, then you print black over it. I like it a lot, but cant work out how you do it.
Thanks

The Artistic Process, by beau on Nov 26, 2007 0:28:02 GMT 1, BRILLIANT - thanks lots for that RIPPER! ;D
i still dont see how the ink gets on to the paper... was he spreading it in the press?
is each piece of paper put in manually then pressed? - not like a photocopier automatic?
sorry if i seem dim on this - thanks!
are the screens just essentially the same as stencils?
been wanting to do a course for a while now, think i will commit to doing it in the new year, anyone know of anything near Manchester?

I recall a tv program which mentioned Golf Leaf, a pea-sized lump of gold can create an area the size of a football pitch, or was it a tennis court??
Hate to mention money but a fair few man hours must go into these?

The Artistic Process, by Ripper1331 on Nov 26, 2007 2:08:52 GMT 1, Thanks Beau.
The screen is a stencil and here he's pouring the ink on the blocked off area of the screen. There is a giant squeegee on a mechanical arm, that yellow coil you can see is attached to it. It brings it back and forth with the control of a foot peddle. Once the layer is down the press opens up and he switches out the printed paper for a blank one. The paper is held in place by a vacuum once lined up on the press.
Question for Satic - did you run the adhesive to hold the leaf in place through the screen for the gold foil like a layer of ink? Looks good!

Thanks guys,
just back so will try answer best i can, was hoping I'd have more photos but not got many of this bit (prob because we need to really concentrate when doing it )
First we screen print the adhesive,
then we apply the 24CT Gold leaf, which has a sheet of tissue to help move it (you can get it loose but its blooming hard to get it to do what you want )
The first photo show the leaf once the tissue is removed..
The print is then left for a while, for the adhesive to dry
The Gold leaf sticks where the areas with adhesive are, then we brush it with a special Gold leaf brush, to remove the parts we don't want..
Then we print the black layer on top to give the detail.
hope that helps, any more questions just ask static

Hi mate,
Not sure how big an area it would cover but it is very thin (which makes it a challenge/ sometimes pain, to work with)
Yep you are right about the man hours,
Where as with normal screen printing you can do batches in one go, we only print one at a time with the gold leaf layer because the adhesive dries quite fast and (because we want to use 24CT Gold leaf) the sheets are only 8 x 8cm squares which means there are a few to put down..

The Artistic Process, by GVD on Dec 3, 2007 17:39:44 GMT 1, Wow what a great thread, i love to read this sort of things .
I will make a photolog of the third-world-country conditions in which i make my handstencilled things at my next project .
All i say is that with the face series, i came home a couple times suffering pretty much hypothermia and one time nearly killed myself with spray paint fumes (but lesson learned, i now own a respirator , still no warm gloves though).
