Turner Prize, by Strange Al on Dec 3, 2007 21:00:18 GMT 1, So, Mark Wallinger's "State Britain" wins this year's Turner Prize. It's a good day for politically inspired art!
Save to mention the fact that the piece includes a few repro Banksy's.

Turner Prize, by mike hunt on Dec 3, 2007 23:49:57 GMT 1, turner prize - how the mighty have fallen - their clout seems to be waning. I saw it - my only comments - replica banksy....why not just get the real thing? - oh yea, its because Banksy has risen due to popularity and people connecting to his his work as opposed to a few elitist tosseurs in a small room deciding whats great art. At least the idea was good this time. One of the few artists I really rate who won - Chris Ofili

Turner Prize, by trowel on Dec 3, 2007 23:57:29 GMT 1, Never mind Mark Wallinger, I know you've all been dying to see the winner of the Turnip Prize... and here it is: Tea P!
That's right - used tea bags in the shape of the letter P!

Turner Prize, by monstris on Dec 4, 2007 0:03:12 GMT 1, +1 Mike.
Tho if you listen to the blurb the art-tossas spouted, it was their way of saying "best of a bad bunch". State Britain was commended for its "immediacy, visceral intensity and historic importance". They said: "The work combines a bold political statement with art's ability to articulate fundamental human truths."
So...Brian Haw is mad. His camping buddies are mad. That's a visceral truth. What else is this rather obvious piece of installation telling us? It's as subtle as taking an anti war message and firing it out of a cannon into our faces. And wtf was gamboling about in a Berlin gallery in a bear suit all about?
Then again, this is the same body of judges who put up a man turning the lights on and of in a room up for an award.
In the words of Banksy (or at least his graff on the steps of Tate Britain): "Mind the Crap".

There has to be a story behind the artist, like 'as a small child, he watched as his mother was robbed by a tea-leaf. The P represents the pain he feels when he drinks tea.'

Turner Prize, by goffy on Dec 4, 2007 4:57:38 GMT 1, So he won with State Britain, which is a reconstruction of the lone protester outside of westminster, but all they had on show at the Tate was his video of him in a bear suit in a Berlin museum! Hope the bear wasn't called you know what!

Turner Prize, by daveanthony28 on Dec 4, 2007 14:35:08 GMT 1, I'd actually like to see the original ''protester' recognized (excuse me as his name escapes me) rather than Mark Wallinger being recognised for replocating his protest material.
DA

Turner Prize, by goodbyekitty on Dec 4, 2007 14:56:49 GMT 1, Maybe I'm not high brow enough to get this stuff but how does someone win an art prize for a collection of someone elses art? And running around in a bear suit?
I just don't get it.....

Turner Prize, by shogun on Dec 4, 2007 15:12:00 GMT 1, Monstis I can't believe you think Brian Haw is mad. He's given up 6 years of his life to take a stand. Is it mad to protest for Peace? He's a modern day hero in my book.
Oh and by the way Brian had an original canvas from Banksy. Next time any of you are in London pop by and say hello, I always get him a sarnie.
Check him out at

Turner Prize, by goodbyekitty on Dec 4, 2007 15:34:00 GMT 1, Thanks for the link +1
It definitly gives a bit more insight but I still feel as if he's taking claim for Brian Haws determination and work. I agree with DavidAnthony, Brian Haw should be the one recognised along with the people who contributed works and time. But I do apreciate the time he has spent bakcing up his own political views by reconstructing this and I guess it has highlighted Haw's protest again.....
I'm feeling very non-decisive today... I give someone 3 minutes before they tell me off for sitting on the fence!
PS Someone explain the bear suit thing to me please in simple people's terms!

Half remembered from this morning's Guardian. The bear represents berlin (it took place in a berlin museum. The title is 'sleeper' refering to East german sleeper agents for the stasi. Sure it's up on the graunidad website somewhere.
copied and pasted, explains it better and more accurately than I did. The film shows Wallinger, in a bear suit, wandering around in a darkened space in the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin. Wallinger made multiple references: the bear is a symbol of Berlin, but also alluded to the cold war and history of "sleeper" spies.

Turner Prize, by slowmo on Dec 4, 2007 16:40:55 GMT 1, I feel he was given the award for the wrong reason though pezlow, its all about young artists (under 50) breaking new ground in exhibitions. Wallinger, well he has been shortlisted before, but he is not what I would have said groundbreaking, even amongst this years finalists. I think at 48 years old, he has received a sort of turner prize lifetime achievement award, which is really not what this prize should be about at all.

Same. I always thought that this was supposed to be for young exciting new artists. I have seen the Wallinger peace and although impressive i did not think he would win..
I thought the joke was if Banksy was ever to have received it, it should have been a couple of years ago because he is now to old ;D ;D

Turner Prize, by pezlow on Dec 4, 2007 16:52:52 GMT 1, You might be right slowmo. Of the nominees this year he was definitely the best of a bad bunch though.
I'd like to see someone like Bob and Roberta Smith win it next year as his stuff makes me laugh.
