I'm new...whats meant by provenance?, by nickyjgordon on Nov 17, 2007 23:22:59 GMT 1, Hi all, i'm new to the board but i expect i'll be around quite a lot!
I have a piece by Chiho Aoshima i wish to sell. Had a look around and notice a lot of people say when selling 'i have the provenance'. What is meant by this? The receipt? I bought it at an exhibition, still have the receipt. Does it really matter?!
I'm Nick, if you hadnt guessed!

I'm new...whats meant by provenance?, by manchestermike on Nov 17, 2007 23:24:58 GMT 1, It matters a lot to some people, less to others... but it is important
It's basically the paper trail back to source... so the receipt in your case

I always though the proper terminology was 'a few chips short of a happy meal', or is that cos I'm very posh and you're common.

I'm new...whats meant by provenance?, by a4mnt on Nov 18, 2007 0:03:36 GMT 1, if you sell a piece, just give them the receipt. what do you need it for?
that cheddar mash MUST have onion in it, be it spring, red, white or chalots.
but not leek, even though they are from the same family

It depends, on this piece that's what he has so that's fine. On a signed expensive Banksy I'd ask/send a letter of transference of ownership, I'd also keep related emails etc

I'm new...whats meant by provenance?, by Photoxtc on Nov 18, 2007 4:13:18 GMT 1, I have some very fine and rare items that were shipped to me without provenance, it doesn't really matter to me as long and the signature is spot on, so far so good... but if I was spending 10k plus on something you bet your ass I would want some kind of paper trail...
And Frankie... I'm diggin your new avatar!! ;D

I'm new...whats meant by provenance?, by darjeeling on Nov 18, 2007 5:07:22 GMT 1, Provenance can be a receipt, history of ownership, original bill of sale or invoice, documentation and or proof of the piece in situ. etc.
People here are pretty nuts for provenance, and it's definitely ideal, but honestly I think it's more important when you're talking about an original piece of artwork-not a print. (Except if the rint or atist is known to have been bootlegged) And even then, if you don't have the best provenance it's not the end of the world if the piece would pass inspection by a bonafide expert.
