Help! Painting is falling apart!, by EHC on Nov 16, 2007 20:08:31 GMT 1, Anyone know what to do if a painting is starting to chip off already? A big part of the problem is that there are two large strips of packing tape on the cardboard that it was painted on. The smooth plastic tape's surface is where the paint is starting to fall apart already but even on the cardboard it looks like its happening.
Any ideas of what can be done or if its possible to prevent any more paint from chipping off?
Thanks in advance.

Help! Painting is falling apart!, by andrewd on Nov 16, 2007 20:36:58 GMT 1, Umm, there are likely to a lot of posts along these lines over the next few years. Traditionally oil on primed canvas has allowed work to last for hundreds of years, there alre also examples of iconic works on wood lasting six or seven hundred years. Conservation problems were encountered by the pop artists who started using acryllic and emulsion which do not have the same longevity of oil paints. The problems will be exacerbated with our generation of artist using spray/emulsion on card/tape/metal etc. Try not to move the painting, make sure it's not in too cold/warm a room and try to find a local art conservationist/picture restorer. As Herveyn says post a few pics and hopefully someone will come up with a solution.

Help! Painting is falling apart!, by EHC on Nov 16, 2007 20:56:54 GMT 1, wow you type fast! Is that the Adam Neate piece?
yup. gutted to find that its falling apart
There is beauty in decay in some cases but definitely not this one. Plus its not really "decay". The paint would uniformly fall off of 2 strips of tape so that there will be 2 large strips of paint missing.

Help! Painting is falling apart!, by Harveyn on Nov 16, 2007 20:58:15 GMT 1, Wow you must have only picked that Neate up.
Is the paint only coming away from were there is tape?
It may just be best to leave it to age naturally. I do not think restoration will help.

Wow, so you'll be the proud owner of two Vandals, cool!
I really don't understand why more people haven't snapped up Ben's work, IMO it's a bargain, the usual reaction is , 'Oh, I don't get it.' Well for those who don't, why not google Christopher Wool who also paints letter canvases. His work goes for hundreds of thousands and Ben's work beats it hands down.

I had this chat with Matt Small today, I was asking about his works on concrete and what are the chances of them falling apart in a few years time. The problem with the likes of Neates street pieces for instance are the fact that he mainly uses Children's poster paints which will not last to long as the paint is very cheap, even Acrylics made by the best companies are not great. If you want to make sure a work is here to stay then It can only be Oil on canvas, sadly most use Acrylics nowadays due to the drying times of the paints.

is it a street piece ?.. if so.. I guess it's par for the course.. street work by it's nature is ephemeral. It ain't designed to last. Sad but true.. looks like it needs a professional hand, no way to fix what's lost, but perhaps it can be coated with something to preserve it.

I agree, if its a street art work then it can only add to the effect.

Help! Painting is falling apart!, by Jef Aerosol on Nov 17, 2007 0:53:12 GMT 1, if it's a street piece, just leave it this way. If it's an original, nothing can be done except asking the artist to restore it or do another one. This happened to me twice and I immediately replaced the pieces with other ones. It didn't happen on cardboard but on pieces on canvas : the black sprayed paint crakled. I didn't even try to restore : I threw away and painted new similar pieces !

Help! Painting is falling apart!, by GD303uk on Nov 17, 2007 1:40:48 GMT 1, i would get it framed and enjoy it, the stiff backboard will help prevent further pieces breaking of ,and you get to enjoy you pic' and it ages with you. could be your Dorian Gray, it gets old and you stay young and beautifull.
