Help from Londoners, by thwaites on Nov 21, 2007 16:28:07 GMT 1, Sorry if this is a bit random, but Notitle and I are moving to the big smoke in January and are currently looking for somewhere to live. We don't know too much about areas in London and want to find a 1 bed flat in a nice(ish) area for not loads of pennies (like most people!).
We are coming up tomorrow for the day to have a good look round and view a few places and just wondered if anyone who lives there could suggest some nice/inexpensive areas we could have a look at?
Much appreciated.

Help from Londoners, by tobywaterhouse on Nov 21, 2007 16:53:49 GMT 1, I'm with McNuts...North,North,North!
Tufnell Park, Dartmouth Park, Kentish Town - all Northern line. Bit pricey but, as we all know, you get what you pay for.
Alternatively, move to yorkshire instead and buy a small village for the price of a London 2 bed.

Totally. Tufnell park is a good balance. rougher but cheaper is holloway. Also kings cross is still pretty reasonable and the crack is good

Help from Londoners, by thwaites on Nov 21, 2007 17:08:16 GMT 1, thanks so much for all your help guys!
We did think South London would probably be the best way to go. We have been looking at Clapham, Battersea and Dulwich, although we found a really nice flat near Kentish Town but wasn't too sure if the area was maybe a bit rough?
Mainly I think I want to feel safe as Notitle is a weakling.
Really appreciate your suggestions
x

Help from Londoners, by thwaites on Nov 21, 2007 17:09:47 GMT 1, thwaites, where are you moving *from* imho, it's best to settle on the side you will need to get out if if you know what i mean. like if you're going to be driving up and down the M1 then you don't wanna be livin in South, cause it'll take you an age to get across london. Similarly if your home town is Southampton, don't live in Walthamstow additionally, i'd say forget about the tube. live near an overground railway station with good connections, it's way quicker overland. and, FYI the streets actually aren't paved with gold, apart from in Croydon where people's jewellery falls off cause it's from Elizabeth Duke
Well I'm from Essex and Notitle is from Lincoln, so we come from different ends really. Its not too far from where I have been most of my life so I can pop home easily enough.
Weren't too sure about living near an overground station but I guess we just need to find our way around and get to know the areas.
Cheers!

Help from Londoners, by pezlow on Nov 21, 2007 17:11:13 GMT 1, All of those areas are fine. I've lived in all those places except Dulwich but I know Dulwich well. Dulwich may be a bit sleepy for your tastes. Clapham and Battersea have excellent bars, restaurants etc on your doorstep. Kentish Town is fun too.

Help from Londoners, by nickc on Nov 21, 2007 17:28:02 GMT 1, I was always a South London boy until it came to actually buying a place and now can vouch for the North side of town. Living near Finsbury Park at the moment (just off Green Lanes) in the part that is now referred to as "Haringey Village" by the local estate agents. Can't fault it really. It looks a little rough round the edges to the uninitiated but you soon realise that the 24 hour fruit and veg shops are a lifesaver and the shish kebabs are the best in town. Factor in the fact you are on the Piccadilly Line, Victoria Line and overground services as well as the 341 bus route (Waterloo in 25 mins), 141 (London Bridge in 25 mins) and the 29 (Tott Ct Road in about 35 mins) then you are pretty much sorted. If you fancied renting downstairs from me it would be a huge bonus as it would mean the guy who owns the place wouldn't have to rent it out to weirdos!

Help from Londoners, by Curley on Nov 21, 2007 18:24:18 GMT 1, Have also lived both North and South london and i have to say i prefer North London any day of the week.
Camden, Kentish Town are great places to live and you can walk into the centre from here if you have to..... (think tube strike).
good luck with your move

Go East! Hackney/Stoke Newington are not far from town (bus/bike/train) and are easy to get out onto the motorways from. Hackney has a bad rep for sure but i've found it a lot better than some other parts of town i've known...

Help from Londoners, by finsburyparkranger on Nov 21, 2007 20:04:03 GMT 1, Thwaites you need to go to crouch end, north london. Close to Finsbury park tube, got an amazing outdoor swimming pool in the summer surrounded by grass and hedges. Muswell hill up the road, home of the kinks . Hampstead heath and Highgate woods a stones through away. Alexandra pallace just up the hill with great views of london. Lots of nice independent shops but very quick to get into the heart of London where all the the galleries and everything else is. Either way i would say stick to north London if you want to be where most things are happening.
