Broadband Speed?, by paulypaul on Nov 17, 2007 12:32:21 GMT 1, Cable BBI speeds will be more consistent and generally closer to your advertised speed than non cable. This is due to them being carried over fibre optic, rather than copper. The speed doesn't deteriorate over distance. Also, cable has a contention ratio of 1:1. That means the line is YOUR line and you do not share it. ADSL broad band has a contention ratio typically of 50:1. This means at peak times you will be sharing with up to 50 others. Imagine a road in rush hour. Cable is your own road, copper is M25 at tea time...
To get a true reflection of your speed you need to speed test several times a day at different times and over several days.

I think that when it was taking ten minutes to refresh a page i may need to get onto my service provider

Broadband Speed?, by paulypaul on Nov 17, 2007 12:43:05 GMT 1, It's more often dependant on your browser, rather than your connection. A simple webpage isn't too info rich so it's not the amount of info coming down your line thatcauses issues - it is the speed that your browser processes it...

Well for one I ain't complaining ( not about the thread but I will be about my speeds!!!!) Be-there say 24mb. The last time I tested on one of these threads it was only 6mg. Down to 3mb. Saying that I managed to break the BT cable tonight but managed to fix it ( don't ask the missus wanted to put a table where the junction box was )That's obviously why they have put the bill up from ยฃ14 to ยฃ16 pm. Any provider recommendations?
