Recommend me some Lunch...., by danvnuk on Oct 30, 2007 13:50:36 GMT 1, So, I'm in your neck of the woods - your Manor. It's lunchtime - recommend me your favourite, cheapest, most inspired hard found place for lunch....that secret little eatery that you only discovered by taking a chance and striking gold.
I'll start it off. I work in Clerkwenwell, London....
so - many places round here to get lunch - but, lets sort the wheat from the chaff....the chains from the independent gems....
Whitecross Street down Old St, 2 options:-
The Indian Curry stall - (name escapes me) - small curry, 3x vegetable curry dishes - amazing grub - ยฃ3 - queue of Indians right down the street, so I imagine it's fairly authentic.
Old Italian Guy - has a trestle table and some Chrome Serving platters half way down the street - I'm eating lunch from there right now - Braised slices of Steak, Italian rice and 2 hunks of Bread - ยฃ4 - Food is generally lovely, and cheap.
(there is also a Banksy piece down this street to stare at as you stuff your face)
Then we have Exmouth St Market...
On a Friday, there's a farmers market (hmm nice cakes) Moro's (Extremely nice Spanish, Moroccan restaurant) has a a stall selling - Flatbread, Chickpea salad, Hummous and shredded lamb.....a ยฃ5...stretching the lunch budget, but one of the best things Ive ever eaten.
(Funnily enough, another Banksy resides down this street to ponder as you munch)
Honourable mention has to goto Nusa Kitchen on the corner of Old St/Clerkenwell Road - great soup...and queues all the way down the street - but not that cheap.
Hit me with your recommendations....

Recommend me some Lunch...., by jfury on Oct 30, 2007 14:04:16 GMT 1, Ok I work near Canary Wharf and my collegue has just gone out to get a chinese from the Royal China (as we are on the beers tonight) which is on the riverside near to the Four Seasons in canary wharf...its pricey prob down to the location etc but the grub is suberb.
I am getting Beef In Blackbean - special noodles and 4 steamed dim sum (variety of) this comes part of a set takeaway lunch meal - they have 5 or 6 dishes available - it costs ยฃ9.00 which is v expensive and blows the traditional ยฃ5.00 lunch budget but worth it every now and again.

Recommend me some Lunch...., by Imoy-San on Oct 30, 2007 14:05:36 GMT 1, I used to work off Whitecross St. The West Indian kiosk always rocked me... The jacket potato guy was also nice.
The queues for the Thai were quite weird. One day everyone would line up at one, leaving the other almost empty. Next day it would be the reverse...
Apart from that, I'd sneak into Waitrose and get something I could warm up at work.

Recommend me some Lunch...., by saltandiron on Oct 30, 2007 14:06:45 GMT 1, If you find yourself in Bath go to the Retro Cafe on Bog island. Good for burgers and the like, and it's nice and quiet upstairs.
York? Henshelwood Deli on newgate market, great sandwiches to go. Not that pricey considering how good they are.
And if you find yourself in Westbury in Wiltshire then I recommend you don't stop to eat, just get the fuck out.

Yeah - the Thai stall is wierd, like you say - sometimes it's rammed, sometimes its empty....I haven't chanced it yet.
Anyone tried Daddy Donkey off the stall in Leather Lane? (It's a Mexican Burrito place btw, sounds kind of peverted though...or maybe thats just me...woof....)

Recommend me some Lunch...., by Imoy-San on Oct 30, 2007 15:07:24 GMT 1, Curried goat, with some rice and peas. Ask for a little hot sauce (it's almost winter) and wash down with some authentic West Indian ginger beer.
Once wolfed down, undo the top few buttons on your shirt, and sit beside an open the window. This stuff banishes any flu or cold symptoms. Yehhaaaa!!!!!
The Jerked Chicken can sometimes be a bit of an animal - approach with extreme caution...

Recommend me some Lunch...., by nickc on Oct 30, 2007 15:21:17 GMT 1, Street Hawker Thai in Maida Vale. Roughly ยฃ6.75 for their Express lunch - I usually go for Pad Thai with a side portion of chicken moneybags. Roma's cafe, also in Maida Vale, for a good omelette.
Nordic Bar on Newman Street or Olly Olsens on Wardour St (I think) for good nordic food. The swedish all day brekkie is great, and somedays you just can't beat a smorgasbord.

Talking aboput Exmouth St Market I was there last saturday for Greek food at this place called Kolossi,... I was there for dinner but im sure they do good lunches too.
Its incredible value for money... in fact I'm still full from dinner last sat night....it was ridiculous... Geez.....we ordered set meal for six and One hour into the meal, they had been serving us over ten different dishes and we thought we had finish, cos we were ridiculously full on pita, tarmasalata, humous, some stew, halouumi and meat, more stew, mushrooms, more humus, etc etc, then the waiter comes and sereves us our main course, it was like four leg of lamb stewed for four hours .... With the marrow and all.... And to make it even more ridiculous, they brought out two seabass too. It was a crazy.... That and three bottles of wine all for twentypounds per pax....
It was extremely good value for money if you can eat that much....

Recommend me some Lunch...., by gozgoz on Oct 30, 2007 17:12:56 GMT 1, There's a Malaysian Chinese restaurant called CHOPCHOP at kings cross too... i dont particularly like it but i know a lot of my english colleagues here really rave about it.. they serve an ok Laksa (Curry noodles).
Also, if you can be bothered, walk down to Russell Square and look for NORTH SEAS FISH RESTAURANT. possibly the best fish and chips ive ever had.

OMG - that's xmas in a fucking box. I love em, and will be found munching one of these on any given day throughout December.

If all you can cook is beans on toast (badly), then yes - I'd say that's terribly arrogant. ;D
Simple food - I love it - slice of white processed bread - slice of Spam.....so simple it's practically retarded.
edited to say - oooh 500th post YAY!
