buying your own products at auction - sunday times, by slinkink on Oct 30, 2007 16:54:01 GMT 1, www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article2753448.ece
an interesting article in last sunday's times about various luxury watch companies buying back their own watches at auction for many times the presales estimates and in doing so increasing media attention on their brand, driving the price up wildly and generating demand for new launches
made me think of some of the art auctions we have seen recently....

good point but I did think that the person the OP is referring to has admitted they bought them 'to fill up some gaps in their collection' or something similar (not an actual quote mind).
but good point about not naming names considering all the crap around Owlstalk etc at the moment. edit to add: www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/oct/29/mondaymediasection.medialaw?gusrc=rss&feed=media for those of you unfamiliar with the case.

buying your own products at auction - sunday times, by mike hunt on Oct 30, 2007 17:34:13 GMT 1, I'm all for running something like a business but when pr is so big, regular and well executed (high prices being a part of that), it is obvious that it is an extremely shrewdly run business. Ironic, considering the subject matter of streetart is so often anti-big business.
No-one is suggesting illegal practices are going on, but we all know none of these press articles report themselves. To build a product to this extent takes a fair amount of investment (even more so if you aren't in with the 'real' art world). Being seen to invest heavily in marketing would be considered unfavourably by many fans, so it needs to be done in a way that it seems unconnected. Speculation about unconventional marketing practices will continue until this scene becomes part of the establishment, or disappears up its own drainpipe!

buying your own products at auction - sunday times, by lesbianwednesdays on Oct 30, 2007 23:37:05 GMT 1, happens in property too, i know a couple of developers who will buy up numerous houses if those in an area they already have a considerable portfolio on, look like they will drop in value.
don't be naive, this happens in all walks of life, people with power manipulate the relavant markets. if it is prevalent in bread and butter industries then it must be wholesale in the artworld, no?
