If its something which seems all about the worked surface, building up textures and layers (just for example) then the artists involvement is important, but if its something relativly simple, or particularly technical (say cutting a shark in half), then the artist might mess up the production of their own concept. The Sistine Chapel would never have been completed without apprentices... And how far back do you want to take it? Should the artist mix his own paint to ensure he (or she) achieves the right shade? Its a difficult question...
Personally I tend to prefer work which shows the work and process of the artist themselves... there is a richness to well-worked images which something more 'finished' can lack...
