Aboriginal Art, by hlarmy on Dec 6, 2009 11:07:05 GMT 1, In my journey into the realms of abstract art, I have recently taken an interest in Australian, aboriginal art. So quick question, but does anyone have any knowledge of this art market?
I'm not expecting much of a response but thought I'd ask the question...
EDIT: I'm expecting something from you Manty...

Aboriginal Art, by dotdot on Dec 6, 2009 17:11:34 GMT 1, what do you want to know ?
how to buy . where to buy... what to buy ... ? ..oh and how to export... !?
I was over there - didn't had too much trouble. I warn you however it in not by any stretch cheap.
Once you understand the concept behind the works .. depending on who did it and from where they're from etc... well it's certainly worth tuning into.

Aboriginal Art, by Filipino Box Spring Hog on Dec 7, 2009 20:43:54 GMT 1, I had some interest in aboriginal art years ago - never really knew where to begin, in terms of collecting, and I still don't.
Sorry, that's not at all useful information.

Aboriginal Art, by pastiepie on Dec 9, 2009 12:24:28 GMT 1, There is plenty of cheap mass produced crap / cheap derogative work available from galleries in most cities in Australia, at least there are plenty here in Melbourne.
My old neighbour actually had people drive over from outback SA / NT and host shows in house but since I don't have much of an interest in Aboriginal art I can't reallly tell you what's good or not.
There are plenty of galleries online if you search aboriginal art though, mostly pretty expensive though. If you wanted cheap(er) originals then I think you'd really need to know someone.

Aboriginal Art, by hlarmy on Dec 9, 2009 23:57:19 GMT 1, Cheers FBS (I think ) and pastiepie...
I have started making some enquiries and reading up on the history of Aboriginal art so hope to educate myself on it in the next 6 months or so with a view to collecting. It appears to be a relatively small, but very promising, market...

Aboriginal Art, by rrrich on Dec 10, 2009 0:03:28 GMT 1, i was over in australia this summer and went along to a couple of exhibitions. favourite by far and whose work ive really loved ever since is the photography of ricky maynard. he's a torres straits islander who photographs aboriginal communities. latest work, portrait of a distant land, is just fantastic and you can get it through the stills gallery: www.stillsgallery.com.au/artists/maynard/. if youre interested in some of the prints, ive got some of the prices. if you want a cheaper introduction, the latest catalogue/book costs around AU$90 shipped to the uk.
if you want a serious collection, the ian potter centre in melbourne - part of the national gallery of victoria - has an excellent, though young collection of indigenous aboriginal art. www.ngv.vic.gov.au/ngvaustralia/. a bit of looking around seems you can find some of the artists they have in their collection with work still available online at reasonable prices.

Aboriginal Art, by daddychaps on Dec 10, 2009 15:49:33 GMT 1, I went to an exhinition of Australian Artists at the Bedfordbury Gallery near Covent Garden a few months back. They were showcasing 9 'emerging' and established artists.
There was some pretty good stuff there overall and sponsored by Contemporary Modern Australia Art (COMODAA). They had a couple of aboriginal artists featured, one of which was Jimmy Barker.
His paintings are great (if not a little pricey) he may have emerged already!!
You can see some of his stuff here: www.comodaa.com/artist.php?art=13&pid=45
Enjoy! ;D
