I think the main players have become less active - probably due to the money they've made and the lack of an incentive to produce new and fresh ideas. Unfortunately, the new wave are not producing original enough work to re-ignite interest in the medium. The movement has got rich, fat and lazy.

The bottom is not falling out of street art just because you can't flip your prints Freerange.
I've definately noticed the downturn recently though. I think one of the main factors is that you dont see as many releases by the big dogs of street art. I think the main players have become less active - probably due to the money they've made and the lack of an incentive to produce new and fresh ideas. Unfortunately, the new wave are not producing original enough work to re-ignite interest in the medium. It's got really stuffy. I still love POW, but seriously...Penny and Fowler's offerings today are not a good reflection of where street art is. However, I still get the old feeling when I go to opening nights. Generally though, the magic has gone. It's definately linked to the credit crunch, but not 100% People still spend vast amounts of money on limited books, banknotes and coins for instance. It's more about laziness. The movement has got rich, fat and lazy.

street art isnt dead, lots of unknown artists out there doing their thing, but the urban art scene is well and truly dead and you can blame street artists who thought they were talented enough to take their art from the streets to peoples houses

i dont know what this contributes to the conversation im just bored and wanted to write something

Street art movement over?, by They call me Stephen on Jul 16, 2009 13:55:45 GMT 1, The resale market is stagnant at the moment as can be seen from the ebay thread on this forum...you can pretty much pick up whatever you want yet hardly anything is selling unless offered at or below cost with the exception of a few artists.
I tend to agree with frerange that the stencil scene is getting pretty dull, that might have something to do with my opinion that stencil wise nothing is a patch on an image like rude copper which is now nearly 8 years old!!
When I see works by the likes of JR, Vhils, Burning Candy etc it is hard to say that the โsceneโ is dead...how can it be dead when the below image is more powerful than any throw up or stencil around Shoreditch way.

Street art movement over?, by junta on Jul 16, 2009 13:58:33 GMT 1, great thread. i think the recession might actually have been good for "street art" to an extent, as regards its use in graphic design, look at sky news' "recession" graphics... and... im sure somebody will think of more examples ;D this recession should also give artists food for thought, people are rightly p****d off right now and id like to see more protest pieces. maybe falling demand for screen prints and such could encourage artists to actually put more work on the street instead... dissseminate by any means neccessary (rich of me to say this as ive never so much as scratched my initials in tree bark) i agree with existencil, where are all the new ideas? its the pieces with an underlying concept or message that keep me interested and they are few and far between. maybe some street artists need to pull the finger out and provide the social commentary and eye candy we love them for and stop blaming the recession ;D

Street art movement over?, by buffin on Jul 16, 2009 14:00:27 GMT 1, Wouldn't say its over at all. As others have mentioned the Banksy show is drawing even bigger numbers than when it opened. Shep Fairey's Obama image received credit for having an influence on the Presidential election in the USA.
Its becoming more mainstream (which could be good or not) and the cream has risen to the surface. Would be interesting to know what history books will record from this street art movement. I am sure there are one or two assured of their place but perhaps history will record certain images rather than the artist themselves.
Whilst stencils on their own can be said to be boring you have to look a bit further as message, humour and placement are all important. Banksy again showed why he is top of the heap in New Orleans in my opinion.

good point - i think, a few of the newer crop should take note of
banksy continually lays down the gaunlet to others in terms of what he's produced and I'm hard pushed to find anyone coming close - with more than one or two stand out pieces

What's dead is the idea that we'll see another blockbuster street artist as big as Banksy in this genre for some time. He's simply not coming, because Banksy is one of those very few in a generation artists. Anyone new that doesn't immediately rise to dizzying heights (including not being talked about much/ at all on .info) doesn't mean the talent isn't out there.
The market's fucked, but same applies largely accross the board, too many get rich quick parasites, but they'll move on to the next thing if they haven't already. Things will thrive when there's less money to be made anyway. Cash always did a good job of stifling creativity, I for one am still excited...

So the current situation is due to a small number of artists who got too big for their boots and in so doing have caused the total collapse of the whole urban scene, and '' Lets blame them'' So all those bankers and politicians that invested our money in pyramid scheme's because of their fat greed and Laziness, they've had litttle to do with it ? i Alsbabar I get the impression you'd still cast that first stone

Street art movement over?, by chief on Jul 17, 2009 17:30:21 GMT 1, I don't feel that the movement is over. I think it's in a period of change. Its sort of similar to how Nike Dunks were all the rage and they were putting out every possible color scheme imaginable because people were buying them (surprised they didnt do McDonalds dunks). Now people are just plain sick of Dunks and are looking at other styles of shoes. We're still sneaker heads we just changed the pair for the time being.
Plus everyone and their mother is doing 'street art' now. I live in Williamsburg and see this thing everyday. Some young buck thinks he can put up a few stencils or paste ups and become the next Banksy or Faile over night. Those guys busted their asses for years because they enjoyed what they did and now reap the benefits.

The big galleries and flippers did a lot of damage, hyping things up. The prices in the end became totally unrealistic and bonkers. You talk to most people, even ones in the know, outside of the urban scene and you can guarantee that they have never heard of Adam Neate. Yet his work goes for the price of an artist that has been successful and established from say the 70's or 80's! Crazy. The urban scene isn't that much different from the fine art world in it's structure though, however the former has definitely been on dirty steroids - i.e. it got much bigger faster!! ;D
As for art on the street - lets be honest, all the big names don't really do anything anymore! On the other hand there's a whole new lot of unexpected people putting great stuff up. Well, where I live anyway. Things change. Things grow.

Surrealism has its day and there are still surrealists painting - i think in the UK you still have a formal uk surrealists group
we have new mediums and new artists following who think like banksy and others (i am sorry that i dont know a lot of names in the scene beyond those i collect!!) that art shoulddnt be a secret language

The real creative talent will always come through and have longevity I believe.

You are too quick to blame the bankers and politicians for the death of a scene, which imo is total bulls**t, they have nothing to do with it. I doubt you will see in a hedgefunders portfolio a Cartrain!!! THE GLOBAL recession is a lot more complex and i doubt very much that the recession was due to people over paying on art.
However if you are talking about the death of a scene, then yes some artist and galleries are to blame, they got too ahead of themselves, they had no following and not much talent, and starting thinking ยฃ's rather than learn their trade and do it for the love of art.
and i get the impression you are cartrain in disguise
