ELC's "Work to Do" at NY's 112 Greene Street , by greeneny on Feb 4, 2009 21:15:46 GMT 1, The Combine and Royce Bannon of NY's Endless Love Crew are co-curating a benefit event March 26 at newly opened 112 Greene St. Studio space in NY's Soho section.
The theme of the show is โWork To Do,โ inspired by President Obama. The proceeds will be donated to NYC Public High School art programs.
Afrika Bambaata and Soulsonic Force will be performing their new song at the showโs opening.
112 Greene St Studio space was one of the first conceptual art galleries in the 1970's, showing artists like Gordon Matta-Clarke, Chuck Close, Richard Serra, Dennis Oppenheim and Joseph Beuys. It later moved and was renamed White Columns but the lower level of the original space remained and became the legendary Greene Street Recording Studios where many of the seminal hip hop records of the 1980's were recorded.
Right now itโs 4000 sq ft of raw space with eleven-foot ceilings.

ELC's "Work to Do" at NY's 112 Greene Street , by greeneny on Feb 12, 2009 20:35:28 GMT 1, Left yesterday and returned this morning to find this 10 foot fellow on the wall ... not sure who did it but there it was. The Dain and this multi eyed guy are all around the stage area which explains him holding a microphone ...

ELC's "Work to Do" at NY's 112 Greene Street , by greeneny on Mar 18, 2009 23:21:27 GMT 1, Bambaataa and SSF's hit "Planet Rock" was written and produced by John Robie who is my partner is this project. They recorded a new track called "Work To Do" which will be performed live (including Robie on vocoder keyboard) at the opening.
And yes, its already very exciting and I'm especially pleased to see how the press -whether those who have always supported this art or those in the press that have been less then supportive in recent years, have been all supportive of what we're doing.
We wanted to bring the most credible of the street artists to a space that has a long history of launching artists whether they were visual or performance oriented artists as they were in the 1970's or recording artists as they were throughout the 1980's and 90's in this 112 Greene St space, or visual again as this group of artists is - the thrill for me is what happens when you combine the artist with this particular space.
I don't know exactly why its happened again and again, dozens of times, over a period of 35 years, but it has as I expect it to again for many of these artists.
If the 35 year history for 112 Greene St remains consistent, a few artists from this group will emerge in the years to come as major contemporary artists.
They will follow in the footsteps of earlier artists coming out of 112 Greene St who made their mark. Artists like Gordon Matta - Clark, Italo Scanga, Richard Serra, Chris Burden, Dennis Oppenheim, Laurie Anderson, Sonic Youth, Run/DMC, Public Enemy and so many more.

ELC's "Work to Do" at NY's 112 Greene Street , by greeneny on Mar 27, 2009 17:21:31 GMT 1, And big props to you as well Sabeth ... Thanks for coming out and I'm glad I just happened to be at the door when you were there otherwise who knows. We didn't know what to expect. We knew there would be a big turnout but never realized it would be that big. Some people were out there for hours despite the rain. Hopefully during the run they will all get to see what the artists did on the walls. And big props to Royce Bannon for not only doing some spectacular work, but for his uncanny ability to have competing crews work side by side for weeks always maintaining a great vibe with everyone all together in the space. And Bambattaa and SSF loved it ... especially because there was deliberate no stage and they could be part of the crowd
