Leake st, by romanywg on Dec 16, 2008 18:01:02 GMT 1, Personally I think the graffers would be more pissed of with someone stencilling on their work, rather than a tag, no? I was down there yesterday too, looked ok to me.

Leake st, by romanywg on Dec 16, 2008 18:47:11 GMT 1, So would it be okay to tag in that little space? Lots of 'little spaces' on this piece.

Leake st, by romanywg on Dec 16, 2008 19:04:52 GMT 1, You are saying "it's always a shame to see a nice piece ruined by a large scale (and $hite) tag". When others might say it's a shame to see a nice piece being ruined by a shite stencil.

Leake st, by hero on Dec 16, 2008 19:15:35 GMT 1, id, i think hes trying to say that if you want to put something up use emulsion and make your own piece, it is a bit of a no no to go over some one else's work-but if you white it out or whatever its ok ;D

Leake st, by romanywg on Dec 16, 2008 20:09:09 GMT 1, You're never going to stop the taggers. That's life. Some of them will be soon be into throw-ups and maybe even pieces but probably never stencils.

Leake st, by Replete on Dec 31, 2008 5:02:26 GMT 1, Speaking as a graffiti writer what your doing Idiom by placing your stencils over any part of a graffiti piece is the same thing as dogging someones elses work with a tag so you're just as guilty as the guys tagging over the pieces down there.
Basically it comes down to the rules of graffiti where a dub goes over a tag and a piece over a dub and burner/production over a piece.
Now I would never tag over anyones work as a lot of the older writers wouldnt but a lot the younger generation writers dont seem to want to follow the rules and just do what they like.
My mate Probs who paints Leake street a lot and is partly responsible for it's upkeep trying to keep in neat down there is fighting a battle with the doggers so people just whacking stencils (no matter how well executed they are) up overother work isnt helping, infact it's making it a hell of a lot worse as it just inflames the situation.
Now I can appreciate and respect stencil work but a lot of the hardcore graffiti bombers don't at all. In fact they loathe it more than anything. Partly because of people putting stencils over graffiti and partly because of a view that street art has hijacked the graffiti subculture with a foundation of respect it hasn't earned or understands.
Like I'd say to anyone tagging halls of fame, whats the point? You get no respect from most fellow writers as tags should be kept to illegal applications and conversely I'd say the same to people putting up stencils. If your gonna do a quick stencil keep it illegal and if you're going to paint a legal hall of fame make sure you emulshion first and completely take out whats underneath leaving no trace a if you dont it's seen as a nother diss known as using someone as a background.
But when it's all said and done things in halls of fame dont last (this is massively true for london especially near waterloo spots like Southbank and now Leake St) and are expected to be gone over so most are happy as long as they get their photos of the finished piece at the end of the day.
But a word of warning if you're caught putting stencils over peoples pieces etc by the writer who did it or his crew mates or a bomber you might find yourself on the end of a beating. This may also happen if you're caught tagging over a piece so the same rules apply.
I've known people get stabbed and killed over less so it's part of the danger of painting on the street. Sad but true as I dont take it that seriously but others do in a big way.
Just keep this in mind as forewarned is forearmed ;D

Leake st, by Pistol on Jan 1, 2009 16:32:43 GMT 1, Personally I think its a shame Leake St isn't about 3 times the length. I do agree other peoples work should not be painted over at all by way of tag or otherwise but that said it is nice to see new pieces. A difficult one with no real solution!
