Are the Americans killing Urban Art?, by gibbin82 on May 12, 2011 22:20:11 GMT 1, Without wanting to offend any people from the United States, I am getting a little bothered that "SOME" American artists are flooding the market with regular releases of expensive prints, these mainly being from Mr Brainwash and Shepard Fairey. As it is with fortnightly releases of new prints at increasing prices I can only see the bottom dropping out of the market and some people getting quite disillusioned with the street art world and stuck with very expensive white elephants. Until recently artists such as Banksy and many others based in Europe have only released any new work very rarely, keeping up quality and demand for their work, but now although the demand currently is there, the quality (especially with Mr Brainwash) is decreasing at an alarming rate. Does anyone else feel the same way?

What prints has Shepard Fairey (not fairy as you put it) released regularly that are expensive? Shepard has always been about getting his art in to the hands of everyone that whats it, at all prices brackets. If your referring to the large format prints recently, they are huge and more as they used to be called "Fine Art prints". There are some artists just as bad in the U.K in my opinion.

Are the Americans killing Urban Art?, by speebe on May 12, 2011 22:39:26 GMT 1, Plenty good and bad both sides of the pond...IMO.
It's the fact that UA has become a currency... that's the true death null for 'Urban Art'.
When people who were buying and selling trainers for a living begin to buy and sell 'Urban Art' you know the game is up.

Are the Americans killing Urban Art?, by baznyc on May 12, 2011 22:39:35 GMT 1, 1. Brainwash's quality was never there in the first place, so not sure where you identify a decrease.
2. If the bottom dropped out of the market, it happened a couple of years ago when people were disillusioned with the lack of quality rather than quantity.
Simple solution. Don't buy it and they'll stop printing it.

Excuse the spelling of Fairey and you may be quite possibly right that it is not just US artists that are flooding the market, but it is to me a genuine concern of too much too quickly, may crash the market and leave a lot of people very disapointed with their investments. I personally couldn't care less if the market crashes and the price of prints tumble as it would give me a chance to get some I would really like but currently can only dream of, after all art should be something to look at, not add up.
But it is just an opinion that I thought to throw out there for people to agree and disagree

Yes French he may be, but his place of residence and marketing machine is totally American, if he was still in France we wouldn't even know who he was and if we seen his (or his teams) work in most cases wouldn't give it a second glance

Like others have mentioned, there are a lot worst UK and European artists plying their trades, some even on this forum

I see what your saying but dont you think the crash has already happened? I mean didnt that hit in 2009 ish. I think "most" MBW buyers are people (probably mainly Americans), buying purely due to the exposure of MBW there that are new to collecting work from this scene. They have heard of Banksy and think MBW is the "french American" version. They want in on the action (investment) as they see it, they dont wanna miss out.
I dont think artists like MBW are harming the scene, in my eyes he's not really part of it, he's like the commercial artist of the moment who im sure has a short life span when most of those people get bored and move on to the next thing.
I know a few guys here and other boards like some of his work, so no offence meant. I dont think some of it is too bad but i just couldnt part with my money for any of it, unless i was trying to flip a piece of his work which is ok to do as its MBW. Fair play to the guy though.

and like the man says, MBW is French.

Are the Americans killing Urban Art?, by gibbin82 on May 12, 2011 23:07:17 GMT 1, When it comes down to it regarding Mr Brainwash I think the Covergirl print is brilliant and if he was to carefully vet the work his team are producing and just release one or two a year he could possibly be taken for a great artist, but unfortunately Covergirl is just a rare gem among a pile of mediocre work and as such it will be devalued as a piece of art.

But I suppose his inability to do that sets him apart from truly great artists

Prob the best comment I have read since about 2008.

For brainwash's standards maybe, not compared to other artists work. It's just a half toned photo with splats thrown at it. No meaning and no artistic talent. You at least need one of those.

Perhaps I have been too stupid to realise this is what I was doing. Perhaps.

Are the Americans killing Urban Art?, by Brushstrokes 75 on May 13, 2011 1:03:45 GMT 1, I reassure anyone doubting but MBW never sold s**t in France lol
MBW has a wider base than most urban artist and I would consider him to be more of a pop "artist" (if you can call him that) than a street artist. He just used street art to launch himself.
Edit : Wait for chinese collectors to get into street art and you'll have your next bubble!

so, if you are worried about the market taking a dump, -don't try to place mbw's shortcomings on Shepard's shoulders.... Shep is a workaholic and he has been doing it longer then banksy....
- i am off to see the Cars tonight..... peace !
