Advice on shipping/possible for sale list, by Phat Spider on May 19, 2011 9:48:18 GMT 1, In a slightly unexpected move, I'm off to Oz next month for up to 4 years! Would like very much to take my art collection with (some framed, some tubed, some flat) but wanted to get some advice on shipping it out there. Work will pay for a shipping company to take all my stuff but do you think they are going to take enough care with the art? Can anyone recommend one that they've used before?
If not - I will have to either leave behind with friends/family, or maybe have to sell a few pieces (which will be the last resort)

Advice on shipping/possible for sale list, by xmyart on May 19, 2011 10:05:50 GMT 1, If your company are going to pay for it you should be ok. You could ask them to deliver the crate then either pack it yourself or be there when they do it. Or Box it up yourself so its bomb proof. Then they cant harm it even if they drop them when they ship it. lots of packing chips.

Advice on shipping/possible for sale list, by stickitup on May 19, 2011 12:23:38 GMT 1, all depends on the price you want to pay, here are companies which specialise in Fine Art Packing:Cadogan Tate, Gander and White, T. Rogers & Co, MartinSpeed, Constantine, Sterling Art Services all are professional art shippers. They will pack the art, ship it, arrange Customs Clearance however it will cost as this will be a dedicated service as oposed to sticking it in a container and shipping it. Not too sure of the tax liability on the import of works of art to Aus, I think you may be able to import pay the VAT and then when you come to move back home reclaim the import VAT, at UK customs you will need proof of purchase to claim the goods are British Returned Goods, all worth thinking about.

Gonna be based in Sydney - girlfriend is following 2 months behind so my stuff will be in storage with the shippers before it ships - and just getting paranoid/worried about my art collection!

Advice on shipping/possible for sale list, by stickitup on May 19, 2011 12:27:03 GMT 1, oh and the other thing is in Aus if you are getting the goods packed in wood I think the crates need to be made from a wood which is ISPN certified meaning no beasties are living in it.

Advice on shipping/possible for sale list, by Phat Spider on May 19, 2011 12:49:26 GMT 1, Thanks for the advice chaps - I hadn't even considered the import duty option!
I don't have receipts for all of the work as some were bought on here, others were traded etc. Any advice?

Amazing really, we've got a few daddylonglegs and woodlouses, they've got foot long centipedes, fire ants and 4000 different spiders that can kill you just by looking at you, and they are worried about our beasties.

Advice on shipping/possible for sale list, by saint on May 19, 2011 12:57:21 GMT 1, Phat, IMO get stuff out the frame, take it with you in a portfolio and pay extra to have that in the cabin if possible. I dont trust anyone to do anything except me who i trust to do everything, should be the same the world over IMO.
Frame it in Oz, done.

This is very true..."we" (i.e. my employer) regularly ship rather expensive products to Auz and I am often roped into the design of said packaging. That was a new one to worry about...normally it's just whether or not it'll survive a drop test or X,000 miles of bumpy ground transport.
