There was another version of this idea at the Banksy v Bristol Museum show. I took it as a comment on global warming...

Which pieces are those ? Id guess not everything is always for sale, or they could be sold to friends on the understanding they are to be shown in future shows

I don't think there are too many pieces that were in both shows.
The "* subject to availability..." piece is a new version of the same idea (like the reworkings of "heavy weaponary" or "the key to great art is all in the composition" in bristol seemed to be newer versions of old ideas).
The ones from both shows were possibly sold in Bristol and lent to this one, or just been lent to both shows - after all it's an honour and adds to a piece's provenance (and value) to be involved in key shows like these.
(if you've not read it i'd recommend reading the $12m stuffed shark for an insight into this side of the art world)

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by jakek on May 2, 2011 15:17:13 GMT 1, I think there is only piece from the Bristol Show that is being displayed at MOCA too, Thomas The Tank Engine.
Is the "i hate mondays" the same piece as the Bristol one? (i know there was some talk about there being 2 versions as one was apparently in POW wasn't it?)

That's what I always thought. Are there really 2 different versions of this canvas? They look to be one and the same to me with the Moca version just being a more complete/finished version of the one that was exhibited in Bristol. I suppose if that is as complex a stencil as the note suggests it's possible but both of those pieces look far too similar to me. I also believed that piece was primarily freehand painting so it shows you what I know.

I hadn't looked at it up close in Bristol but i always thought it was freehand too. The style of the piece was much more in keeping with the other paintings and sketches compared to the stencil based pieces.

Good spot fragile.
I fin it interesting that in his recet shows (here and in Bristol) Banksy has revisted old subjects with a new twist and change in medium, style and scale.
This being a call back to the Girl with Balloon, then I also saw links between Monkey Parliament and the Laugh Now monkeys and also the Police playing in the meadow in the Bristol show were holding a bundle of flowers which looked like those thrown in the canvas versions of Love is in the Air.
Maybe i'm reading too much in to this.

I'd not seen this piece before - jr's work works really well like this.
A great litte thread, very telling though that a new banksy original in a show gets little attention here whereas a £5 poster gets 21 pages.

MOCA "Art in the Streets" Until 8th August, by cornholio on May 19, 2011 3:12:46 GMT 1, GRAFFITI: THE NOBLEST ART by Charlie Finch
Notoriously curmudgeonly art critic, Charlie Finch, who hates almost everything (author of Most Art Sucks) comes out to defend ... graffiti? The noblest art?
www.artnet.com/magazineus/features/finch/graffiti-the-noblest-art-4-25-11.asp
Well it is a bit tongue in cheeck, my favorite line is ... But he also has to let graffiti 'artists' (sic)... and As artworks they are poor, yet every one is a profile in courage.
Although I would say that's a more antiquated view. What might have started off as a profile in courage, has mutated into an egotistical act of ghetto machismo or even worse just another tagger promoting his 'brand' for fame and glory ... in the hope to sell out a bunch of screenprints on the internut.
But the one thing he totally got, which that poor journalist (sic) HEATHER MAC DONALD didn't get in this article posted earlier in the thread...
was this... The last best hope against the branding of corporatism is graffiti. If a museum wishes to celebrate that once in awhile, that's OK by me.
This old guy that hates everything actually gets it!!! Graffiti's one saving grace!
Meanwhile high school journalist Macdonald lambasts Fairey for this??? [Fairey] noted that some people had tried to peel his OBEY stickers off mailboxes and lampposts, viewing them as an “eyesore and an act of petty vandalism.” Such unenlightened actions were “ironic,” he wrote, “considering the number of commercial graphic images everyone in American society is assaulted with daily.”
Are you kidding me? There are hundreds of things to criticize Fairey over, that guy is a total hack, but this? That's just about the only smart thing Fairey has ever said. Sheesh. Talk about missing it entirely.
