RE:DEFINE feat Shep, Faile, Dalek, Hirst, Miller, by edcase on Sept 21, 2011 4:37:59 GMT 1, Given that the original thread on this auction has mysteriously disappeared a few days before the event, I thought I'd post up details again for those interested.
This benefit exhibition and auction brings together a roster of 30 of the world's most exciting artists (including a number of urban/street artists) to mark 30 years of AIDS.
With all proceeds in aid of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, the event will take place from September 16-24 at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. The exhibition culminates in a live gala auction on September 24th hosted by Simon de Pury and with live music from The Boxer Rebellion.
The 30 contributing artists are as follows:
Lee Baker, Adam Ball, Peter Blake, Billy Childish, D*Face, Brian Adam Douglas, Elizabeth Eamer, Ben Eine, Tracey Emin, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Katrin Fridriks, Christopher Gascoigne, Pam Glew, Haroshi, Pieter Henket, Damien Hirst, Jeremy Kost, Joseph Loughborough, James Marshall, Harland Miller, Polly Morgan, Gérard Rancinan, Rankin, Stuart Semple, Jamel Shabazz, Benjamin Shine, Gavin Turk, Dan Witz and Russell Young.
Unlike traditional auctions there is no buyers premium or sales tax (plus for US residents, winning amounts above the low estimate are tax deductible.)
There are full absentee bidding options including telephone and online bidding.
You can download the catalogue from the following link:

Or bid online here: www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/26168
You can also find other absentee bidding details here:

If you'd like to read more about the event, use the Google search term: MTV RE:DEFINE
This is a great opportunity to pick up some exemplary works for very reasonable prices, and all for a good cause!

RE:DEFINE feat Shep, Faile, Dalek, Hirst, Miller, by edcase on Sept 21, 2011 14:52:07 GMT 1, Ah, sorry, I did look through a few other areas, and also at my post history to see if I could click through from there.
Silky, seeing as this is an auction event, is it possible to leave here?
cheers ed

RE:DEFINE feat Shep, Faile, Dalek, Hirst, Miller, by selfmade on Sept 25, 2011 14:43:10 GMT 1, I was interested in seeing the results of this auction. Charity auctions don't really reflect the market, but are interesting nonetheless and it is good to see people spending their $ on good art . Some really strong works in this one.
The James Marshall (DALEK) was stunning and I hope to see more from this artist in this style. Still a bit surprised by high ($17K) the result, but it is a really great work.
The Shepard Fairey at $26k was not much of a surprise given the strength of the piece and the visibility of the auction. The monochromatic flags are much nicer than the varied color versions. With 6 or more versions of these flags at $9,500 each (for paper) in an edition of 12 + APs, kind of amazing that there is still room to go at auction.
The Fridricks was an amazing deal at $9Kish. The final value was not only under estimate, but about half of what I was quoted for a work of this size from a gallery. At nearly 60" x 60" on canvas, this is a museum piece.

RE:DEFINE feat Shep, Faile, Dalek, Hirst, Miller, by hlarmy on Sept 25, 2011 15:06:55 GMT 1, Wow, I'm amazed at some of these prices - I was expecting higher than top estimates on many lots given it's a charity auction and has been quite a high profile auction.
The Emin sold for $32,500 (estimate $50-70k) The Polly Morgan, Fridriks and the Gavin Turk were also amazing bargains!
Top work to all those involved in organizing this....

RE:DEFINE feat Shep, Faile, Dalek, Hirst, Miller, by edcase on Sept 25, 2011 17:11:55 GMT 1, It's been a very interesting experience, and I think what we've learnt most is that Dallas, besides being obviously very wealthy, is also both fairly conservative in their art tastes but also very passionate and knowledgeable. Some of the private collections I've been lucky enough to see in the last 2 weeks include key pieces you would have seen in recent museum exhibitions by the likes of Rothko, Koons, Bacon...
Ultimately we didn't just want to go out and source a bunch of blue-chip-only names - it wouldn't have reflected the MTV angle, and the world doesn't need another carbon-copy benefit auction, especially since Dallas' own 2x2 event already does that so well. It was essential for us to include some of the more emerging names
The conservatism also extends to the event - it wasn't targeted at the 'old money' but more at the younger Dallas crowd. Despite several other major events on the night, Phillips de Pury said afterwards that it was 'an unprecedented success' for a first-time event, not just the fact that we sold out all 300 VIP tickets, but also the quality of art sold and the amount raised. It's likely to now become an annual fixture, so next year we can take what we've learnt and make it even better!
As for individual results, we all know that on a different night in a different city, the results could and likely would be very different. Ultimately taken as a whole, with the massive exposure the event generates for the artists and the overall figure raised for the charity, not to mention the feedback we've had not just from collectors but also important local institutions, we can only be extremely happy.
