URBAN QUEENS. Female Street art From the 13th till the 16th October, Urban Painting hosts at Spazio Concept in Milan, Urban Queens, a group exhibition that brings together some of the leading names of the international street art by women. From Faith47, who has turned the spotlight on urbanism South African art with her social work characteristics, to the six stars in the Italian Urban universe: Pax Paloscia, Senso, Nais, Miss Eu, Alice Pasquini and Alita, half of the collective Orticanoodles. In addition the ultra-coloured world by Cuore, form Argentina and Spain, with Emedemati and Btoy. Exposed at Spazio Concept also the Brazilians Jana Joana and Nahu Ananda, some photographs by Jessica Stewart, the eco-graffiti by Faunagraphic from UK, artworks of the Canadian Indigo and those of Mymo, who lives in Berlin. The show includes the aerosol artists Liliwenn from France and the American Lydia Emily with her controversial portraits. Urban Queens continues the path begun with Female Street Art on the Roof, the first group show in Italy dedicated to the women of street art, set up in a penthouse in Milan last September and sponsored by Urban Painting in collaboration with the young curator Constance Sartoris. With this second project Urban Painting and Costanza Sartoris introduce Italy into a stream of international exhibitions, happenings, organizations and books devoted to urban culture for women. From the 2006 book by Nicholas Ganz Graffiti Women, the Street Art from Five Continents, festivals and French Kosmopolita รฉtoiles We B * Girlz in Urbaines, a book of the legendary author and photographer Martha Cooper Subway Art, which was followed by the same name festival, organized to present these โstrong, independent women as models for future generations and show everyone that there is a significant place for them in this world cultureโ And in this international arena, women are present since the beginning: in the seventies the tags in streets of New York appear also crowded with those of two girls, Eva 62 and Barbara 62, as well as Pink Lady, nowadays one of the most prolific (women) aerosol artist in the world.
The artists in the exhibition Urban Queens collect the inheritance of these three writers of urban art pioneer who paved the way for dozens of artists, a world dominated by men, where women have always worked, trying to keep away the stereotype that sees them only part of this culture as someone's girlfriends or groupies. The conquest of a wall, to these artists, means something more than their colleagues not only for the increased risk faced by women who paint in isolated places at night or the frameworks which are already dangerous for men. The conquest and the construction of a wall or a piece of art is a matter of respect and recognition of their value as artists, โhuman, sexed, nomads, killing the female type, simply call us women of todayโ a scene often too macho. The conquest of a wall today is what in the early twentieth century was the conquest of the famous โRoom of Oneโs Ownโ that gives the title to one of the most popular essays of Virginia Woolf. A room that is a space of independence and freedom of expression in which the creative woman can finally โkill the angel of the house, which inhabits the deeper layers of his identity, [...] the image of woman who is opposed to โself-realization. โ A room like a wall. In the early twentieth century, as in this decade. A physical space to project themselves, โadding its own flavor, its own style and taste to all women what men are doing and make it ours too.โ Word of Missy Elliott, one of the most respected American manufacturers and artists from the hip-hop world.
