What art has done for me., by Deleted on Feb 11, 2012 4:29:26 GMT 1, I've been into art i guess since 1984, thats when I got my school buddy Vince, to draw me a picture of Adam Ant for a fiver. I wish I still had it. I've still got the next one he did which was a present for my mum a portrait of My Sister, brother and I.
I didn't pay much attention then until 1998 when I returned to Bristol from a 3 year stint of living i Oxford. I was blown away, like most of us here by the local artist Banksy. You couldn't move without a new Banksy going up overnight. When I heard one of my friend was paying roughly ยฃ35-ยฃ75 for prints, i thought what a nutter. That sounded like a lot of money for a copy of something(of course I knew nothing). I always kept my eye out for new street work, but it wasn't until nearly 5 years ago that I thought about buying art for the first time. I had bought Banksy's book 'wall and piece' and thought I'd love to have something nice to look at on my walls. Still after looking into it I thought theres no way I'll be able to be able to justify spending x amount on art when I had my second chld on the way. So I came up with a plan of seeing if I could make a few quid trading, buying and selling and make enough money to actually justify owning something for myself. I guess for a while you could have called me a flipper/trader/whatever you want and you would have been right. Its just how I got my foot in the door. For a long time now those habits have changed and I only buy art with one thing in mind(spending time sat enjoying looking at it). Although I still have to sell to be able to afford to buy, it hurts letting go of anything I have in my collection.
For around 4 years I have suffered from Depression,Anxiety and Stress and art is the main way I am able to cope with my problems. Nothing apart from my family and friends gives me more of a sense of pride and passion. I spend hours with my kids and probably an equal amount of time sat enjoying my art. I don't know what I would do without it. I guess I'd get by. However the paintings I have give me such pleasure I can get lost in them for hours at a time. Its such an escape from reality that it allows me the opportunity to escape from the world , without drinking or having a cheeky smoke. Although I do sometimes rely on meds from my GP to help me out. I have made some great friends through art and had some great days/nights sleeping out on the streets queueing for prints. One person in particular deserves a mention. He has helped me more than any GP or person. Curiousgeorge is simply a one off. I owe you babbs, you've got me through many difficult times.
If you've read this far thanks for listening, your a great bunch of folks. I'll probably regret writing this in the morning. just woke up as the kids are ill and fancied getting this of my chest. Love to you all, Paul/Slammer

What art has done for me., by mred on Feb 11, 2012 7:25:21 GMT 1, I hope you had a good sleep and thanks for sharing this. We all have our demons and sadly most of us try and hide them from the outside world which is not great for anyone. You are a lot stronger than most by simply being honest enough to share.
Like you I find a lot of escapism from the art I own and am really grateful for the people I have met through being an art fan.
Hopefully catch up at a show soon

What art has done for me., by craigf on Feb 11, 2012 9:58:53 GMT 1, Paul, good on you for sharing how you feel, some of your demons and how art and your family help. Mental health problems affect many people, someone who I love very much is going through their own demons at the moment and I am doing what I can to help, but feel very helpless a lot of the time to really be able to make a difference.
I use art as an escape, for different reasons to you, but with the same outcome. It gives me great pleasure to find new artists, visit galleries and put art on my walls that I can sit and enjoy.
Have some karma from me, hope the kids get well soon

What art has done for me., by curiousgeorge on Feb 11, 2012 12:50:22 GMT 1, Not sure what I have done other than lend an ear and state the bleeding obvious (and let you win at golf when feeling low) ;D
Art (cue sick bucket) for me has diverted me onto a better a path in life and kept me on straight and narrow and away from unlicensed boxing
Nice to know art means escapism for others too
Enjoy half term with the gang

What art has done for me., by confused2 on Feb 11, 2012 12:57:55 GMT 1, A refreshingly open and honest post Paul, which struck a chord with me.
In today's society it takes a big man to admit to mental illness. Having been there I fully appreciate what finding something that makes you smile again means to you.
I hope you continue to enjoy your walls for many years to come! All the best.

What art has done for me., by Urban Cowboy on Feb 11, 2012 13:40:14 GMT 1, A very refreshing post. I havent been here as long as some but nice to have a community type post rather than the usual tiresome arguments that seem to be taking over.
Art for me is a distraction from a job which i don't enjoy but unfortunately I need to keep working. Art gives me something to think about to relieve the monotony of my days.
Since my family came along, I find I dont have as much time as I had for art and I do put my family first. When I am in a position to give up work, I hope to make a living from art and have made steps towards that but not there yet.
Best of luck with the UPC.

What art has done for me., by Agent Provocateur on Feb 11, 2012 14:10:56 GMT 1, Damn, I've rewritten this post twice now, cr*p... Paul, it's great to see your honesty and integrity (and balls... philosophically not physically of course!) in telling us all how art has and is helping you through trying times. I've only met you a couple of times on my travels to shows but it's always been a pleasure to have a quick chat. Your love, passion and commitment to art and people close to you should be obvious to anyone on this forum, from being part of Get Dring Mobile to setting up your Urban Portrait Commissions venture. Although there's a massive dichotomy of members on here, from all over the planet, young and old, this place has given us all the opportunity to look, chat, find, love and hate loads of art that would otherwise never have silkily stroked our eyeballs with their colour, texture and meaning. I have met loads of new mates on here and by getting out and about to various shows even got drunk with some off'em! As said earlier, have a great week off relaxing with the clan and looking at the quality art on your walls.

Keep enjoying that art and the closeness of family and friends. Its the lifeblood that binds us all.

This is a good place to be, learning about new art and art in general, for most art is an escape from everyday monotony, Stay happy Paul.

What art has done for me., by robertlondon on Feb 12, 2012 2:27:57 GMT 1, Lovely original post... this is not directed at you but as I work in mental health I thought I'd just stick a bit in about therapies.... just to help people know what's available...
If anyone suffers with depression, anxiety, stress - government guidelines now state that GPs should offer TALKING THERAPIES to people (a service often known as "I-APT"). This can encompass a whole range of things - from just basic supportive counselling through to more specialised therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy and even employment advisors.
I only say this because quite often GPs turn to medicines first before considering talking therapies.
Also a few posts here mention DISTRACTION... and when things are acutely difficult for people, it's distraction (and perhaps going to sleep) which are our only (healthy) ways of getting through things. When people call our crisis line at work - it's distraction that is the main advice given.
It's a good idea, when you're feeling ok, to try and find things you enjoy that you know can distract you from less desirable thoughts.
Broadcast over. I'll shut up now.
