Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by johnnyh on Feb 23, 2012 15:24:27 GMT 1, What is the exhibit and where is it being held Not Art but I run big trade Fairs so can get you the name of a company who does it. First thing to decide is do you need it. Depending on where it is and how, why you do it. It may not be your liability. If it is you need to find out what the liability is etc - Risk assessment
But first look at if and why you need it

Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by Silentbill on Feb 23, 2012 16:38:37 GMT 1, After much blagging Ive managed to secure a newly renovated shop front for a short time. The guy from the council was going on about me needing it incase someone falls whilst in there viewing. Im assuming they mean me, pissed out my tits.

Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by johnnyh on Feb 23, 2012 16:58:52 GMT 1, No he is correct you will need public liability as you take the public into your shop.
It will not be as exspensive as you think. On simple risk assessment work out the top ten dangers to the public while in your shop.
Eg if you have machinery that is working could I put my hand into it and lose a hand or just a finger. Alternatively if you only have only some canvasses on the wall one falls off and hits some one - less cost etc.
Hence look at top ten dangers plus max people at one time more people = more multiple risk etc
However you probably want 100 -250 k public liability for a small shop as a gallery maybe less. But see on cost. Also ask the shops next door who are independent traders on what .they do. It covers injury to the public while in your building / shop.
Pm me if can help more

Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by Cedric Mnich on Feb 23, 2012 17:29:10 GMT 1, Problem is Silent Bill should expect quite many toadally drunk peepers around who would most likely put something else than hand or finger in machinery (if there is any). I just hope it's not a Delicatessen. :-P

Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by spenie on Feb 23, 2012 17:35:35 GMT 1, PL policies usually cover millions not thousands, usually the basic is for 1 mil, you've also got the issue of employees liability if you are employing anyone to assist with the show. Any good commercial insurance broker can arrange this cover

Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by searchandrescue on Feb 23, 2012 19:58:21 GMT 1, How did that nosey f**k from the council find out about it??? Lesson for next time, even if your just doing a quick pop up in a shop. Don't let those w**kers get involved. Unless the stuff your showing is Damien Hirst or worth bundles don't bother. What normally happens is council stooges bowl past a doorway, hear the clink of glasses and sounds of merry making and think they've stumbled upon a rave. As long as no one is going nuts they just tell you to keep the noise down and close the private view. Everyone is off to the pub by 8.30-9 so no drama there, during the next 3/4 weeks or so there's really only gonna be a trickle of people and a curator. By the time they come back you've only got a few more days to go and they can't be arsed busting a few art students. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile, suddenly you'll need accessible loos, haz tape here there and freakin' everywhere, fire extinguishers blah blah. No need!

Public Liability Insurance for an exhibit, by Silentbill on Feb 23, 2012 21:03:44 GMT 1, I may have to be as legit as possible as im planning a coup d'รฉtat. I dont think the people letting me use it are going to like my pieces im intending on putting up.
Im putting up safe pieces for the preview show were I reckon the council twats are coming for the free wine then the next night Im gonna install my "Kill the Bankers" art. In fact Ive just decided I'm gonna call the exhibit "Coup d'รฉtat".

Prob. best if you run it by the UAA legal dept, don't worry they've watched a few episodes of "LA Law" All for brining' em down from the inside, sometimes we all have to go vertical!
