Off topic wtb mountain bike, by Deleted on Apr 15, 2012 21:01:37 GMT 1, If your going to ride it off road you need to spend more than £170 mate. You need to be looking for hydraulic disc brakes, not cable disc brakes. Sealed hubs on the wheels, not ball bearing types. Sealed bottom bracket as well. Check every part to ensure there is no wear in the groupset or you will have difficulty indexing the gears. Buying second hand is a big lottery as people tend to use the bike off road and ride it until the parts mentioned all need replacing. Message me with anything you get offered and I will advise you on it.

ok thanks, im buying it as a gift for my gf, i mean its not going to be used aggressively, just a bike to ride during the summer and sometimes we ride trough the woods.
on the other hand im now now looking for one and wanting to spend bit more.
i really like the look of the 2011 gt xcr, im not going to buy new but looking the rrp is over double for what you can pick a very good condition second hand one.
also have art trades for one of these.

It is always wise to spend a little more as in the long run they will offer better value for money. If you have a mtb shop nearby you it would also be a good idea to get them to replace pads in the brakes and blead the brakes if there is excessive travel at the lever. Yor missus will love the confidence it gives. By the way you can't beat women in lycra, its always been an incentive to chase the nice bum up the long climb. Have fun its one of the best ways to keep fit.
