ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by Chuck D on Oct 5, 2007 19:22:35 GMT 1, Those are the most coveted prints of the year. I wouldn't dare sell them, especially if you believe in the artist. It's so early in his career the only place these are going is up.
But hey, if you bought these to sell them...have at it.
I emailed my mate who was looking to get these. He's going to PM you.

ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by endtimes on Oct 6, 2007 1:13:03 GMT 1, Lot of unbridled enthusiasm out there still. Should you hold out on sellling these like people say? Or take some quick money...
Honestly, I think Francis is SUPER friggin talented. No joke. But I have serious doubts that he will be the next big thing. I really don't think this kind of stuff is what the art world is looking for. I'm not saying his paintings aren't good. I just don't see superstar status at all and think the current buzz around him is a good excuse to unload them if you're loking for something else. He's an amazing illustrator though. I wish I could paint that good.
Just my thoughts...

ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by shavemysoul on Oct 6, 2007 1:20:56 GMT 1, Fair play, it's all about opinions and I respect that. But I think Ian is mega talented and it's pure chance now as to whether he'll become a 'next big thing'. I think often it's factors like management and the right time and show that can help an artist to such a status.
Like you said, Ian's talent is phenomenal. I think he has a style that is clearly his and as a result, I think interest in his work will continue to rise for some time. Like many, I personally won't be upset if he doesn't become too big (though I hope he gets a lot of recognition and praise - cos he deservse it) because his work is still then accessible to us.
Other thoughts?

ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by endtimes on Oct 6, 2007 1:53:41 GMT 1, Uh oh. I spoke my mind again, here come the neggers...
Like I said his talent is truly amazing. But so is the talent of Donwood and that guy who did the album art for Gomez for similar example.
I may be wrong sure. But I'm more commenting on the unchecked enthusiasm here than his talent. This assumption that his prints will only skyrocket in value is nothing more than ...assumption. ...and it's not as though these prints are really cheap right now. In fact, I think they aren't cheap at all anymore. Good time to sell? maybe...

Hey, wasn't encouraging anyone to neg you or at all saying you were wrong. Was just saying I disagreed in some ways.
I would totally agree with you that it's pure speculation as to how his work will value in the future. No-one can really say that with regard any artist.

Good advice, sure, the guy can paint, but i wouldn't class him as 'the next big thing', his pictures are too drab for me, and are easily forgotten, i got very bored of them very quickly, and if i had put them on my walls i reckon i would already be thinking about what i could replace them with.......

ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by ABC on Oct 6, 2007 12:35:32 GMT 1, IMO there are two many "Next best things" There can only be a few in a decade. Granted there are some amazing artists out there, Ian being one, but how does he stand out from the others? Im not sure he does at the moment. IMO of course.

A valid point Ant. Already this year we've had Dan Baldwin, Guy Denning, Ian Francis and one or two others quoted as the next big thing Perhaps a mixture of over enthusiasm, along with gallery hype, but I totally agree that you only get so many in a decade, not bucketloads per year. More of an argument for Adam Neate however

Cool. It would be stupid for anyone to neg you when you're expressing an opinion. Surely opinions are the reason we're here? Go figure with some people I guess.

I wouldn't say that the excitment over Guy Denning was to do with over enthusiasm or gallery hype. For a start, no galleries got involved and the enthusium was created by people on this forum. Was the enthusiasm to do with him being the next big thing? I don't think so. I think he is a very talented artist that struck a cord with many on this forum. In this overpriced print culture of ours, the originals seemed quite cheap hence they sold very quickly.
I know I didn't think once about 'next big thing' when I bought my Denning. I bought purely on quality.

I know you bought GD for reasons of quality, but not everyone else did. There are plenty of cases where people bought the artists that I mentioned for reasons of profit, and enthusiasm which was assisted by hype. That is why the secondary market exists.

ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by shavemysoul on Oct 6, 2007 23:47:43 GMT 1, I'm glad there are people who don't buy when they're not sure if they def. do like the work or not. Like Stuey said, there are a lot of purchases off the back of hype. I agree that Guy Denning is talented. But few of his pieces do it for me and hence I don't own any of his work.
I love Ian's work. I bet it's not plenty of people's cup of tea... and I'm glad. Means some of us who like Ian's work get a better chance to buy his prints when not all are bought off the back of hype.
Aside from getting the credit Ian deserves, I don't think fans of Ian's into his work genuinely will be too bothered about the value of the work. It might not add $$$ to their collections value, but at the same time it means the work stays accessible for longer. And surely that's what's at the heart of it... the work itself.

I buy most of my art on impulse/looks alone, I do admit however I seem to be swayed by views on these boards from time to time. I love Ian Francis's work and would love that death star print but how can we keep justifying paying over 1k on every print from the second hand market due to the hype of every talented artist, surely something has to give soon.

I buy most of my art on impulse/looks alone, I do admit however I seem to be swayed by views on these boards from time to time. I love Ian Francis's work and would love that death star print but how can we keep justifying paying over 1k on every print from the second hand market due to the hype of every talented artist, surely something has to give soon.

ian francis set of 4 BLK MRKT prints, by Gentle Mental on Oct 8, 2007 17:58:30 GMT 1, Ian is rare (almost unique) - smart, funny, sweet, sexy, creepy, modern, and beautiful all at the same time.
reminds me of Micallef's japan-inspired series. Twisted innocence (maxed out)
