MOAS CHARITY Sale: Vinnie Nylon Original , by Feral Things on Aug 30, 2016 21:54:39 GMT 1, Little bump for this thread. Nylon is a proper veteran of the graffiti scene and this is one of the nicest pieces I've seen by him. Very worthy cause and a very generous offer by the OP.

'Post No Bills' | Neuberger Museum of Art, by Feral Things on Aug 30, 2016 21:49:56 GMT 1, The Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York have an exhibition coming up called 'Post No Bills: Public Walls as Studio and Source'. It features the work of Blu, Josรฉ Parlรก, JR and Vhils amongst others and focuses around the idea of urban walls hold the history of a place, which is something that has always been central to Parlรก's psychogeography work. The exhibition runs from 11 September until 23 December and a catalogue is being published to accompany the show.
Fortunately, the show doesn't include Blu's walls which were removed from Bologna but it does include his 'MUTO' animation. I'm sure we've all seen it a thousand times before but I could watch it a thousand more times, so here we go again. Pure creative class.

Duck, by Feral Things on Aug 24, 2016 8:43:09 GMT 1, Any clues welcomed! Thanks This is currently on show at the 'War, Capitalism and Liberty' exhibition at Fondazione Roma Museo in Rome.ย I think it's acrylic on canvas from about 1999.
Here's some more Banksy ducks from a few years earlier alongside Lokey, Soker and Tes:

Sowat ๐จ๐ต Calligraphy โข Graffiti โข Print Release , by Feral Things on Aug 23, 2016 8:39:43 GMT 1, Hi, i'm going to the Palais de Tokyo next week-end , any advices ? ...Thanks Try to get there for a guided tour of the LASCO Project; tour times are available here. They last about 45 minutes and you'll get a lot more background information about the pieces. Some of the pieces are only accessible on the tour anyway but the OGxJR pieces are in the tunnels under the museum and aren't accessible at all to the public for safety reasons.
Oh, and look out for the Invaders; there's one inside and another on the outside of the Palais de Tokyo.

Sowat ๐จ๐ต Calligraphy โข Graffiti โข Print Release , by Feral Things on Aug 22, 2016 23:18:52 GMT 1, This short film by Os Gemeos and JR was first uploaded a few months ago but I can't see that it's been posted here so I thought I'd do so having just watched it at Palais de Tokyo:
(Sorry, can't work out how to embed the video from their Facebook pages so I've uploaded it to Vimeo. Obviously happy to remove this is anyone isn't happy with this.)
The OGxJR pieces are part of LASCO Project #6 and here are some shots of Philippe Baudelocque's evolutionary and developmental chalk drawings which are also part of the project:
And here's some of Evol and KR's contributions from previous LASCO projects:

Swoon related news, by Feral Things on Aug 11, 2016 9:51:59 GMT 1, Swoon has some new unique variants of 'Miss Rockaway' up on her swooninprint.com site. The Miss Rockaway skeletal-mermaid was the main image for the armada of seven rafts which traveled down the Mississippi in 2006 finding new ways of living. The image takes its name from Rockaway Beach which is at the end of the A-Line which was the train line on which Swoon and the Toy Collective used to carry out ad interruptions. (Random graffiti fact of the day: It's also right next door to the neighbourhood out on the edge of Queens where Rammellzee came from).

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Aug 9, 2016 20:22:24 GMT 1, 'Cap Matches Color: Two Decades of Digging' documents the now-vintage spraypaint like Krylon and Rust-Oleum which is the foundation of graffiti culture. There's photos of adverts, colour-charts and the cans themselves dating back to the 1960s, as well as some nice interviews with the employees and the family that ran Krylon. It looks like hunting down all the old cans and paraphernalia was a labour of love for the guys that put the book together but I think we're very lucky that they did before it was too late and these cans disappeared forever.

Street Art - Who Did This?, by Feral Things on Aug 8, 2016 21:08:28 GMT 1, sublime - the piece is by Sepr KTF ASK and you can find his website here (link fixed - thanks, Coach).ย He's been a stalwart of the Bristol graffiti scene for a long time now and I'd imagine he'd be a very easy guy to work with for a commission.ย He also plays drums in a band called Olanza, hence the frequent musical references in his work.ย Here's a few pieces from over the years...
2004 (with Cyclops) and 2006
2008 and 2010 (with Inkie)
2010 (painted shortly before the related riots) and 2011 (from his solo show at Weapon of Choice gallery)
2014 and 2016
By the way, is your forum name a reference to the band Sublime?

Artists' Influences, by Feral Things on Aug 3, 2016 17:21:39 GMT 1, [...] I always thought Bl ek le Rat was a major influence on Ban ksy. I'm curious why he isn't mentioned? Also, what sources are you using? Have the street artists that you've listed acknowledged that these forebears influenced their work? Yes, all the influences that I've cited above have been acknowledged by the artists. They come from a combination of interviews, books and conversations that I've had with some of the artists from over the years, but I can't remember the exact source for each one I'm afraid.
The names above were just a sample of the people who have influenced each artists and, yes, I think Blek le Rat has been an influence on Banksy too. My suspicion is that the quote about 'every time I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well, only 20 years earlier' has been slightly misinterpreted but nevertheless I'd be very surprised if he wasn't an influence.
Some other people that I think have influenced Banksy (some acknowledged, some just presumed on my part) include Inkie, Richard Hambleton, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, Andy Warhol and John Nation who ran Barton Hill Youth Club in Bristol (Banksy is quoted in 'Children of the Can' as saying; 'It might sound a little crazy, but I think John Nation, that shouty red-faced social worker who made it all happen, has had more impact on the shape of British culture over the past twenty years than anyone else to come from the city.')

Artists' Influences, by Feral Things on Aug 3, 2016 15:01:45 GMT 1, My thread is null and void from the use of one word. Go ahead and plagiarise my thread. My understand is that your thread is about plagiarism i.e. someone taking someone else's work and passing it off as their own. That's a different issue to an artist being influenced by another and then creating their own work in response i.e. 'standing on the shoulders of giants'. I don't think a thread about influence is an attempt to imply that a thread about plagiarism is redundent; they're just two different and equally valid conversations.
Anyway, here's a few more...
Robert Del Naja: the aesthetics of Judy Blame, the non-letterform work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the vinyl covers of Futura:
Keith Haring: the 'low art' approach of Jean Dubuffet, the public art possibilities of Christo and the poetic nature of ancient Egyptian art:
Dale Marshall: the colour-theory of Richard Diebenkorn, the introspection of Adrian Ghenie and the process-led approach of Brion Gysin
Miss Van: the proud feminism of Frida Kahlo, the autobiographical natures of the work of Tamara de Lempicka and the political portraiture of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Aug 3, 2016 8:29:36 GMT 1, Any recommandation on abstract or graffuturism must-have book ? In no particular order these would be my top recommendations for graffuturism/abstract graffiti related books...
- 'Futurism 2.0' by Gamma Proforma is probably currently the best book out there about graffuturism. The book is being republished and is available to pre-order here but the book won't actually ship until November.
- 'Abstract Graffiti' by Cedar Lewisohn is both broad and very well written; there's some photos and a bit of info about the book in the first post of this thread here.
- 'Now' by Stohead was the catalogue for his show at Galerie le Feuvre from a couple of years ago and I think it really coincided with a sweet-spot in his career; the catalogue is available here.
- 'Stendhal Syndrome' by Katrin Fridriks is her first monograph but, unfortunately, its release has been repeatedly delayed (October 2016 is the current release date). A copy was available to peruse at her last show and it looked beautiful; you might still be able to preorder a signed copy from Lazarides.
- 'Futura' by Ben Drury. This is still the only monograph from the godfather of abstract graffiti; a new book was supposed to be published a few years ago but unfortunately it never materialised.
- 'The Chronicles' by Jonone is excellent but very expensive to get hold of at the moment, so it might be worth waiting until the English edition is released later this year.
- 'Graffuturism: LA Exhibition Catalogue' is still the only book actually released by Graffuturism but I understood that Poesia was working on a comprehensive book which would be fantastic.

Artists' Influences, by Feral Things on Aug 1, 2016 22:34:53 GMT 1, I know there's a recent thread elsewhere with posts mentioning artists' influences but as its title relates to plagiarism I thought it was worth starting a thread actually about influences instead. So, to get the ball rolling...
Swoon: the collage work of Robert Rauschenberg, the site-specific work of Gordon Matta-Clark and the photography of Brassaรฏ
Os Gemeos: guidance of Barry McGee, the folk art of Arthur Bispo do Rosรกrio and the handstyles of Rio's Pixadores
Banksy: the early stencil's of Robert '3D' Del Naja, the humanitarianism of Kรคthe Kollwitz and the truisms of Jenny Holzer
Mr Jago: the abstraction and pointmen of Futura, the depiction of nature by Claude Monet and the manga cartoons of Nobuhiro Watsuki

Can you tell me anything about this...., by Feral Things on Jul 31, 2016 19:06:20 GMT 1, Thanks Feral. Knew the knowledge bank would have info! You're very welcome! It's disappointing when other people ask a question and then don't acknowledge the people that provide the specific answer . The magazine included a fold-out version of the poster but you could purchase an unfolded version which looks like what you've got. Great pickup!

Hackney Wicked Festival, by Feral Things on Jul 30, 2016 10:55:17 GMT 1, This weekend sees the return of Hackney Wicked with lots of artists including Xenz opening their studios up over the weekend around Hackney Wick. A good opportunity to see around before artists are pushed out the neighbourhood by rising rents. Further details here.

'The W/K Show' | Wizard Kings , by Feral Things on Jul 26, 2016 17:33:55 GMT 1, The loose Wizard Kings collective (Mr Jago, Will Barras, Mark Lyken, StenDec, SheOne, O.Two and Andrea Riot) have their first collective show opening on Thursday called 'The W/K Show'. The show is curated by SheOne and the work will focus around black and white pieces, which is the dominant colour scheme in SheOne's work anyway. Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Jul 26, 2016 17:23:48 GMT 1, 'Twinkles' by Miss Van was published in 2011 and features work from the previous three years.ย This was the period when her work evolved into the darker, richer and more melancholic style she has been refining ever since.ย The book includes over 80 large scale pages of her work.ย Also worth picking up is 'Wild At Heart' which includes photos of her trip down the Pacific Coast and it was the catalogue for her 2013 show of the same name.

Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by Feral Things on Jul 25, 2016 22:45:39 GMT 1, Thanks to everyone that made it such a fun weekend.ย It was really great to see friends both old and new - Coach , Harveyn ,ย 11 , Dibbs 45 , laurentbaboo , Agent Provocateur , overend , lha and all those other good people that aren't on the forum.ย I had a blast!ย Here's a few photos...
Jody - the subtleties of the tones in this piece are extraordinary.ย Unfortunately, this photo was taken in the rain, so please don't judge the piece by the photo.ย I think everyone agreed it was pretty special in person.
Shok-1 - this was the other standout piece for me; the can control was just on a whole different level.ย The original source image was of a horse but obviously it's been given a slight addition
FinDAC - the hot-air balloon is a reference to GWRB, the fact that two-thirds of all UK hot-airs are made just around the corner from this wall, the film 'Up!' & UPFest and the fact that the guy helping out had a kid who looked like Russell from 'Up!'; incorporating the chimney was a nice touch too.ย The houses are a nod to theย houses in the nearby neighbourhood of Totterdown.
Cheba and Fanakapan - the OG which is mentioned earlier in the thread is created by painting a layer adding a thick layer of resin and polishing it very smooth then painting another layer and repeating the process several times - it gives Cheba's pieces a really effective feeling of cosmic depth that needs to be seen in person to be appreciated
8Mail and Agent Provocateur - it was a pleasure to catch up with you both over the weekend and I really enjoyed both pieces
Taker - I've seen the inverse idea done elsewhere but it's fun nonetheless
Dan Kitchener
Gemma Compton and Copyright
And the full Banksy x Kato shutters for those that only saw the bottom half
Thanks to everyone that made it such a fun weekend.ย It was really great to see friends both old and new - Coach , Harveyn ,ย 11 , Dibbs 45 , laurentbaboo , Agent Provocateur , overend , lha and all those other good people that aren't on the forum.ย I had a blast!ย Here's a few photos... Jody - the subtleties of the tones in this piece are extraordinary.ย Unfortunately, this photo was taken in the rain, so please don't judge the piece by the photo.ย I think everyone agreed it was pretty special in person. Upfest โข Street Art Graffiti Festival , by Feral Things on Jul 21, 2016 11:40:29 GMT 1, If anyone's looking for some recommendations while they're in town...
DJ Shadow is playing at Motion tonight, Hangfire have an exhibition called 'Homestyles' which opens tomorrow night (I stuck my head in earlier and it looks brilliant) and The Other Art Fair is on at the Arnolfini this weekend.
The Burger Joint does very good burgers, the Souk Kitchen does great breakfasts and Mediterranean food and if you're looking for something a bit fancier you can try Birch. They are all in Southville where Upfest is being held but if anyone wants recommendations elsewhere in town give me a shout.
Cheo, Masai, Dale Grinshaw, Goin, Gemma Compton and Copyright have already started their walls and 45RPM just painted this wall opposite Hangfire Gallery.
