All works are ยฃ50 each and the show will be on at Hamilton House in Bristol until 27 June.

Roadsworth related news, by Feral Things on Jun 22, 2016 22:51:52 GMT 1, Roadsworth has just completed this mural on St-Laurent Boulevard as part of the Montrรฉal Mural Festival. The piece references the world's 65 million refugees and, as Roadsworth has put it, "Walls and fences are for painting and climbing not for dividing and obstructing"

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by Feral Things on Jun 22, 2016 22:32:17 GMT 1, With respect dude, just because your friends don't have anything to do with the caste system doesn't mean it doesn't go on. All I can tell you is that I live in the heavily populated city of Leicester and am aware it happens. Your post stated that the 'whole thing is built on a cast system'; I hope you can see that that's very different to stating that bad things go on with some individuals. I live in a multi-cultural neighourhood in Bristol and it certainly doesn't reflect the vast, vast majority of the community that I love living side by side with.

The UK's EU Referendum - 23rd June 2016., by Feral Things on Jun 22, 2016 22:03:32 GMT 1, The whole thing is built on a cast system Your sweeping statement about the Asian community is just plain wrong and problems with a small minority of people shouldn't be used to tar a whole section of our society. Certainly none of my friends who are of Malaysian, Sri Lankan or Indian descent have anything at all to do with the caste system.
Getting back to the EU referendum question, for what it's worth I'm voting Remain. I wouldn't want to be in the Norwegian's position of paying for the common market and following its rules while not getting a say in how it's run. If instead we're going to have our own trade agreement with the EU then it should be borne in mind that trade agreements are deeply complex and nuanced things; it's not simply a case that one country agrees to freely trade with another country. As with any negotiation, the terms will favour the larger, more powerful party so the UK would inevitably be negotiating from a position of weakness.
With regard to the issue of EU laws, I have to admit that I don't know specifically which laws that originate from the EU are so objectionable to people. Most of these laws are technical laws relating to trade and the environment. The cases which grab the headlines relate to the Human Rights Act and the ECHR which (although I support both) are completely separate to the EU. If the issue is that these laws are not passed by Parliament then it's worth baring in mind that the majority of UK legislation is in the form of secondary legislation like statutory instruments, which also aren't passed by Parliament.
I don't think the EU is perfect but I very much hope that we remain and work to improve things for everyone rather than become more inward looking.

The ยฃ50 Art Thread, by Feral Things on Jun 21, 2016 22:05:32 GMT 1, Jody has released a whole set of new prints on his website at jodyart.co.uk:
If anyone's not familiar with Jody's work he was painting at the Barton Hill Dugout back in the 1980s (you can see some of his pieces from back then here) and I think his piece was my favourite from last year's Upfest:
Here's some more of his street work:

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Jun 20, 2016 19:03:25 GMT 1, I know 'A B C D'air' by Dran has been already been mentioned in the Tiens show thread but I just wanted to say a big thank you to the thoughtful and very generous forum member that sent a copy to me over the weekend. It's a beautiful book and the simplicity of the concept (a painting for each letter of the alphabet) helps to get across the strength of his work perfectly. The images included are a nice, representative overview of his work includes paintings from the current show. There's seven Dran books in total and they're all worth picking up but I think 'Fabriquรฉ en France' is a favourite from those earlier books.

Kiss of Death, by Feral Things on Jun 12, 2016 22:06:20 GMT 1, I'd assumed that this was supposed to be a fraternal kiss, rather than an intimate kiss. Is it not referencing Vrubel's iconic painting of Brezhnev and Honecker on the Berlin Wall?
Here's a photo of the street piece if anyone's interested:
I'm guessing that the name Paintsmiths isn't that familiar to many people so it might be worth mentioning that Paintsmiths is Bristol-legend FLX1...
...and Dones

Sunday morning question, by Feral Things on Jun 12, 2016 12:13:26 GMT 1, I'd estimate that there's probably somewhere in the region of 25-30k prints which are eligible for COAs.ย That sounds like a lot but it's certainly less than most other comparable artists at this stage in their careers and it's a tiny fraction of the number which other artists like Dรผrer and Warhol produced.ย The majority of the early editions up until Love Rat were editions of 750 which accounts for a fair proportion of the total number.

Euro 2016, by Feral Things on Jun 11, 2016 8:45:06 GMT 1, The reports I'm hearing are that some of the English fans are not behaving well. The bright side to the otherwise depressing predictability of some England fan's terrible behaviour is that every two years we're reminded of this brilliant piece by Dran:

Hyuro related news, by Feral Things on Jun 10, 2016 22:58:27 GMT 1, Hyruo's new show entitled 'Convivencia' (Co-Existence) opened last night at Dorothy Circus in Rome.ย The work centres around issues relating to both public and personal space and raises questions about the privatisation of public space (which brings to mind issues like 'POPS') , the extent to which society allows women the space to freely express themselves (which brings to mind the harrassment of Caroline Criado-Perez) and the right to use public space for political protest (which brings to mind SOCPA and the restrictions on protesting in Westminster).ย The show runs until 23 July and Hyuro's watercolours from the show can be viewed online here.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Jun 10, 2016 19:41:30 GMT 1, A few people earlier have mentioned that they thought 'Beyond The Street' is the most insightful book about street art and I would definitely endorse that view and, on the topic of the best books, I think 'Love Sour Love' is probably the most beautiful book that I've read. It was created by Faile between 2005 and 2009 and features four prints each by a pretty stellar lineup of artists including Blu, Swoon and Miss Van. All the contributions are bound together into one volume but you can unscrew the binding to remove individual pages. Some of the prints, like those by Futura and Judith Supine, are signed and some other prints, like those by PINS and Bรคst, are hand-finished. Love Sour Love followed on from four thematic books which Faile produced prior to 2004; 'Death' and 'Orange' (produced for friends and family) and 'Lavender' and 'Boredom' (which were limited edition releases):

Taps & Moses related news, by Feral Things on Jun 9, 2016 20:19:23 GMT 1, Taps and Moses have a new show opening at Kolly Gallery in Zรผrich next week called 'Europa'. The work centres around the timely question of whether Europe is a philosophical idea united by common goals, rather than just a geographic entity brought together by circumstance. Share the STIK love!, by Feral Things on Jun 9, 2016 20:02:31 GMT 1, Really?ย Is money really the only thing to discuss here?
To what extent do people think that Stik and his work is a product of our times - the crisis in the Levant, the Tory's fucking with the NHS, social inequality - or is his work more universal than that?
I've posted the photos below before but, by way of example, the piece on the left from 2009 is in a pub that was being squatted and the piece on the right from 2011 is on a deli in a middle-class neighbourhood.ย Is it a good thing that the change in the kinds of locations that he paints means that his work is seen by a wider audience or is it a bad thing because the disenfranchised who perhaps benefited most from his work might not have the same exposure or connection to it?
Since Stik has become established squatting has been made illegal in the UK.ย What effect do people think this is going to have on artists coming from the same beginnings as Stik and has anyone noticed a cooling effect on the Temporary Autonomous Arts squats?
Is Stik aware of Stay High 149's Saint stick men and, if so, does his work in anyway reference Stay High's work?

Futura | 'New Horizons', by Feral Things on Jun 8, 2016 22:29:34 GMT 1, Futura has a show called 'Newย Horizons' opening at the Library Street Collective in Detroit next week. The work combines some of Futura's classic imagery like the gyroscopes and stanchions alongside markedly new elements like single, broad brushstrokes.ย The work references everything from the Detroit Piston's red, blue and white team colours in a canvas called 'Lunar Event' to Prince in a purple-toned canvas entitled 'Paisley Park'.ย The show runs from 18 June to 3 September and it will run in parallel with a number of large-scale outdoor pieces.

Banksy books?, by Feral Things on Jun 7, 2016 15:11:06 GMT 1, The contents of the three little black books (Banging Your Head, Cut It Out and Existencilism) are all included in Wall & Piece and these are the only monographs that he's published, although obviously lots of other people have published books of photos of his work. However, there are a few other books that he's contributed work and short snippets of writing for:
- 'Urban Discipline 2002' by Mirko Reisser - 'Street Sketchbook' by Tristan Manco - 'Children of the Can' by Felix Braun - 'Scrawl: Dirty Graphics and Strange Characters' by Ric Blackshaw and Liz Farrelly - 'Trespass' by Carlo McCormick
And also Faile's 'Boredom' book:

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Jun 7, 2016 14:09:12 GMT 1, Urban Discipline was a series of exhibitions organised by Dain in Germany. The pick of the years was 2002 which included Banksy, Os Gรชmeos and Alรซxone, as well as German artists like SatOne, Stohead and Hendrik Beikirch. The books provide a nice mix of studio work and street work and you can see how much all the artists' work has progressed and changed during the intervening period. There were also books published for the 2000 and 2001 exhibitions and all three can be viewed online here.

Banksy at Bridge Farm Primary School, by Feral Things on Jun 6, 2016 15:23:26 GMT 1, Here's a few photos for anyone that's interested. The tyre is stenciled and the flames and smoke are freehand; the two work seamlessly together. I think it's probably the first street piece in a while that he's signed too.
The piece references one of Martha Cooper's 'Street Play' photos that she took in Alphabet City of the late 1970, thus returning the compliment that Martha paid when she included a Bร nksy piece in her 'Ghetto For Life' photo (EDIT: That's pure speculation on my part!). A stickman was also included on a piece on Bridewell Police Station back in 2000 (which at the time was the main police station in Bristol); unfortunately, I can only find this badly faded photo on my hard-drive but you can see the stickman on the right (the stencil on the left is by Arse, not Bร nksy; Bร nksy's stencil of two cops had been buffed by this point but the buffers missed the stickman):
And to allay anyone's concerns, no children have become arsonists since coming to school this morning

Artists You Might Not Know, by Feral Things on Jun 3, 2016 16:50:25 GMT 1, I went to the studio of an amazing up & coming artist named Ivy Nate. She takes donated stuffed animals and gives them a second life as art. Am I the only idiot that was expecting taxidermy? Thanks for posting, I love it when something just comes out of leftfield like this. It's completely different to Ivy Nate's work but when I saw it was stuffed toy animals I was reminded of my favourite short film from Dismaland. There's something strangely magical about hearing the line "Teddy's crotch unicorn is healthy".

Petro related news, by Feral Things on Jun 3, 2016 9:21:11 GMT 1, Sorry, I know there must already be a Petro related thread but when I search I just get lots of threads featuring the word 'petrol'.
Anyway, here's a nice new little video about the man himself:

Mr Jago, by Feral Things on Jun 2, 2016 20:33:29 GMT 1, Mr Jago has half a dozen new pieces in a group show at Inex Gallery in Brussels opening tomorrow (BXL really is the place to be this summer isn't it - MIMA, Drร n, Maya Hayuk). The show also features Okuda, M-City and Graphic Surgery and includes work on furniture made by fancy-pants designers Roche Bobois.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Jun 2, 2016 20:24:45 GMT 1, Swoon's self-titled book covers the decade which followed her first putting up work in the street in 2000. The book includes, amongst many other projects, her early paper-cuts around New York, her first show at Deitch Projects, the Miss Rockaway project and her work connected with the Mexican femicide. Collaboration is central to Swoon's artistic practice, so it's nice that the book includes lots of photos of this context. Surprisingly, this is the only monograph which Swoon has released so far but there's some beautiful photos of her Swimming Cities project in Todd Seelie's 'Bright Nights', which is a great book in its own right.
