Etam Cru 🇵🇱 Sainer & Bezt • Street Art • Print Release , by sin on Nov 13, 2016 20:41:30 GMT 1, I of course dont speak for everyone, but as someone who has 2 copies of it, I'm not motivated to part with even my double. I figure it will make a nice gift for someone some day (I had a 3rd copy and gave it to my Dad), and at $400 or whatever its trading at now, its more desirable to hang on to it than to let it go, likely at even double that rate I wouldnt let go of it.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by sin on Nov 5, 2016 21:18:55 GMT 1, Local guy, Coinslot. A hustler, ended up putting together a body of work and then had the show pulled, so he put together the show on his own, set it up right next to the spot the show was supposed to be, and title the new show "My Neighbors Dont Like Me" Love the moxie.
Love the detail and the satire, not my usual thing but I dig it.

Damien Hirst, by sin on Sept 19, 2016 18:02:58 GMT 1, For the record, I dont buy Hirst because its not my thing. However, I have a gallery I deal with from time to time who does deal in Hirst and Ive had some great conversations with them.
First, its not about process. The pills, the spot paintings, etc, its all concept. The pills are a critique or conversation about how commercialized mood controlling substances have impacted our lives, and taken over as a form of sustenance. The spot paintings, from what I was told, are color pattern meant to illicit an emotional response in line with the title. Its the thought, the concept, more than the execution. There is no rendering, color field, etc. I personally have no connection with the work, I get it, I just dont have an emotional or cerebral response to it. Other than to think "maybe i should become an artist" The gallery i deal with loves that shit. To each their own.

Has anyone every purchased a piece with a partner before?, by sin on Aug 19, 2016 22:02:19 GMT 1, I can get half way there on a grail piece. I have a partner, a good friend, and we are considering going in on it together. Anyone ever done this, and have any advice, want to avoid pitfalls as the relationship is worth more than the art to me (and the art aint cheap)
Thanks

Os Gemeos, the Bowery Wall. Lesser known fact, that piece is still there on the wall and the current wall is built in front of it. I have a picture that shows the head inside the burro on the bottom right side.

Looking for a Banksy piece to loan for an exhibition, by sin on Aug 3, 2016 22:28:09 GMT 1, First, thanks everyone for the replies. Many of the questions were the same, so I am going to answer here for efficiency sake.
The exhibit will be in Gainesville, Florida. Its next April 13th - end of May. (so some time off) The exhibition insurance will be handled through the cities master insurance rider (I will get the specific carrier information), and we will add the loaner as an additional insured on the policy.
Thanks again everyone who has replied, I will reply to other questions not covered here independently.

Looking for a Banksy piece to loan for an exhibition, by sin on Aug 3, 2016 19:24:56 GMT 1, Hi everyone -
We have been asked to curate an exhibit at a cultural center. The scope of the exhibit is urban art from 1960 - Today and we have a solid catalog of work pulled together with one rather glaring exception, a Banksy piece.
My personal collection doesnt include any, nor do my current other loan sources.
I have seen stolen street pieces exhibited and refuse to go that route for ethical reasons. I am looking for a multiple on cavas, vs a print, as I dont think the print would look fitting against the impact of other work in the show.
Does anyone have something they would consider putting on loan, or have any advice?
Thanks in advance.
Craig aka Sin

ElbowToe 🇺🇸 Brian Adam Douglas • Woodcuts • Stencil Artist, by sin on Jul 30, 2016 20:58:14 GMT 1, Brian is working on a new body of work. We had a chance to visit the studio recently. Didnt take pictures out of respect as much of the work is in process. He did just post a new finished piece. The transformation from what I saw to this was subtle, and mostly in the mark making and made it all come together. This body of work, lovely sad songs sung in stunningly beautiful notes.

Artists Style plagiarism, by sin on Jul 30, 2016 17:45:03 GMT 1, Derivative work for me comes down to what is left when you take the copied / appropriated element away.
DFace for example, clearly twists the comic book from Lichtenstein, who himself lifted it from the comic artists. Lichtenstein (like Warhol with the Marilyn image), took a snippet from the source work, and in doing so changed the perspective. DFace took the images, and then destroyed the subjects. If you take away the comic book in the Lichtenstein work what do you have? you have an artist who took a small portion of a great image and in reducing it brought out something in it that framed on its own takes on new perspective and meaning. DFace then appropriates the aesthetic, but not the framing, and then destorys the wholesome image and gives it a post apocalyptic, zombie twist. There are a handful of other artists who also take from Lichtenstein with varying degrees of result, some are just stealing, some are biting DFace, some are taking it new places.
Blek and Banksy has been discussed to infinitum and I'd like we can all agree that there is some early lifting of the rat, and little adjustment. the early rats were derivative. then banksy took it further. so while the earliest work with rats clearly was a direct bite, it moved on and the later work is clearly on its own.
banksy and brainwash, im still on the fence on what brainwash is. is brainwash a social experiment that is still playing itself out? questioning in a $$ = important art world, what is actually good art? taking work from yourself and using it for someone else as art, is art and would equal not being derivative. the presentation changed and was done with intent. brainwash just released a marilyn image that is directly derivative to warhol, with no change (other than the process). but if the person doing it is the art, then i suppose, the entire thing is art. if, brainwash isnt a social experiment and should instead be looked at as an artist then nearly all the work is derivative, appropriated, and large parts of it (with the rare exception) are shit.
Richard Prince - instagram photographs, i tend to lean in the came that says that prince is shit. that the work is theft, at best. however, i do enjoy the conversation, that someone taking something like an IG photo, blowing it up and printing it on canvas does by the removal of the item from where it was placed and then placing it on a canvas for sale could be making a statement and in doing so make it art. i still think its crap, but im sure when im 80 they will be selling for millions and i'll bitch and moan about it.

Richmond VA Street Art, by sin on Jul 23, 2016 5:01:59 GMT 1, Shane and team have really done a great service to that city. If anyone here ever has a chance to go, you should, the town is dope as hell, good food, chill people and its now covered in art. Considered moving there just for that.

JASON ZENGA - Kaws Running Chum Silkscreen Set - darkcity, by sin on Jul 18, 2016 17:48:28 GMT 1, I presume that the forum software can block more than just IP, particularly in the case of fraud. My suggestion would be that this forum owner, and others, should file a complaint in the local jurisdiction of Jason, effectively threatening him with tresspass and violation of whatever computer hacking law exists in that district and federally. This way if he tries to enter the sites again he would be in violation just for having accessed them. This problem is solvable, it just requires a concerted effort where people arent worried about the money they are spending to solve it. Do an indie gogo, and raise 10K - 20K and use the funds to file motions against Jason, and gather evidence for a criminal case that could actually be won. Otherwise, caveat emptor.

JASON ZENGA - Kaws Running Chum Silkscreen Set - darkcity, by sin on Jul 17, 2016 17:31:08 GMT 1, Ok. In that case I'd change my calculus.
15k is a little below my threshold but close enough.
Keep in mind, Jason has no personal assets and isn't listed on any business ownership that I can find.
