TateWard • Art Auctions 🇬🇧, by daniel3886 on Mar 27, 2021 10:50:19 GMT 1, A large number of people on here have had a positive experience selling and buying with Tate Ward and let's face it, they will happily accept consignments that many other auction houses wouldn't (and get some decent results). A similar number of people here have an axe to grind when they see people like Danny making a success of their business. Clearly mistakes have been made (Petrol Bomb-gate, non-editioned Warhol's, etc) but unless I have missed something, Danny has provided a clear level of detail around resolution and has followed this through? so that’s it? they get a pass? cause they paid back, at cost, most of the money they defrauded ppl out of? so the PB i bought in 2018 that would b worth 4k now (a real version at least) they gave me back my buy price of 650£ n that’s that? no harm no foul? they get 2 reinvest all that stolen money into real banksy, watch it appreciate, sell at massive profit, then refund some ppl n we’re good 2 go? business as usually? man i should move 2 the UK, things run wayyyyyyyyyyy different in nyc, but in UK ppl who own, co-own, whatever, auction houses r allowed 2 rob hundreds of thousands of pounds thru trackable public auction house n private sales, the same ppl, n there’s ZERO repercussions? sounds like the fkn wild west 2 me.... plus the fact u guys that know this 4 fact, live out there right next 2 these guys, see these ppl in the real world, n still chose 2 do business with them? wow, just.... wow.
Matt I can see you are unhappy with this situation and acknowledge it has left you out of pocket. As you can see from the article Toshspice posted Sotheby’s refunded their buyer the price he paid as we have done for you. We also went above that to refund your framing costs.
So whilst I understand it’s frustrating and the only place that frustration can be directed is at us, I believe we have acted in good faith in our efforts to resolve the situation for you and others in the same position.
As a final point I’d like to ask if the value of the PB was now below your purchase price would you have accepted a refund at that level? I assume the answer to that is no.

TateWard • Art Auctions 🇬🇧, by daniel3886 on Mar 26, 2021 14:47:51 GMT 1, Just thought a few facts could help certain people with their doubts and concerns:
This sale is a record for us by hammer £1.75m on the night and moving closer to £2m with aftersales which are continuing now. Sell through rate of 87% average lot value £9k.
Myself and the team are delighted with this continued growth.
I’m flattered that we are mentioned in the same sentence as Christie’s and Sotheby’s and in 275 years I hope we are where they are. But until then we will be continuing to improve our service, build our customer base and listen to our customers. We have however managed to outsell them on the following lots from ours and their most recent sale.
Unsigned Love Rat they hammered at £50k we hammered at £55k Sepia Morons they hammered at £60k we hammered at £64k Unsigned Have a Nice Day they hammered £35k we hammered £45k
I will allow people to draw their own conclusions from the above.
There were a few results missing from the website the reason is they were (a) lots and our system wasn’t displaying them, this should now be resolved and they should now be viewable.
The buyer of the Haring drawings is a long term collector who knows his mkt very well. He has spoken to us at length Pre sale and performed his own due diligence.
I’m always available by phone or email to answer any questions people have so please get in touch if you wish to discuss anything.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Jan 20, 2021 22:28:01 GMT 1, I wanted to take the opportunity to update this thread and also make some general points regarding Tate Ward.
I understand people have been looking for answers and feedback here, what we have been doing is contacting and indeed speaking to the people who have been directly affected by this issue. As opposed to people who have not been directly affected and in some cases who are simply posting with the sole intention of attempting to damage Tate Ward's reputation. A good example of this is of course the "member" who started this thread in the first place. A new member with around 16 posts all on the Tate Ward thread's. Probably a competitor, gallery or maybe who has an axe to grind. I will leave others to judge the the true motivation of this and other similar members posts, but to me it is very clear. We will not explain or justify ourselves to people who create accounts purely to try to damage our reputation.
On a number of occasions the police have been mentioned and bearing in mind both Tate Ward and Nick have a very clear audit trail as to where the Tesco Petrol's have come from the police were contacted at a early stage. We have spoken to Ray Swann of the Metropolitan Police Art and Antiques Unit. Obviously this is a public forum as such we cannot into full detail here. However that situation may change in the future, if/when it does I will again update members.
What I can say is that we are confident that we have contacted everyone who has have been affected by the above issue. A few haven’t responded yet, we will continue to try to contact these buyers. Not all the prints sold were fake a number were genuine. All have been offered a full refund and in addition any shipping. framing and other costs involved.
The Warhol's have also been mentioned and I think fall into two distinct categories:
Chanel Offest Lithograph's - these were published in 1997 by Chanel in conjunction with the Andy Warhol Foundation. The total edition is unknown we have sold multiples of these and have never had any issues whatsoever apart from some members here being unaware of the backstory to these prints. We will continue to sell these works.
Warhol "Unsigned/Unnumbered Proofs". The nature of running an auction house is that when you get a strong result for an item then you tend to get offered more of the same item. Which is exactly what happened here. A consignor consigned an image, it got a strong result and we were then offered others by various different consignors. These were in a number of our auctions and during this period we didn't receive any complaints or notifications that people thought they were fake. We had done our own research pre and post sale and these are openly sold by a number of auction houses and galleries. There are 2 galleries in particular - one in Israel and one in the States. They have been established for a long time and if these works are such obvious fakes then I wonder how are they allowed to still sell them. America in particular has an incredibly litigious culture and if these are indeed fake then it seems unbelievable that they continue to openly sell them. We have contacted all the consignors and the selling galleries for further information on the history/authenticity of these items but in the meantime we are going to do two things:
Firstly stop selling them until we can definitively establish the authenticity of these proofs.
Secondly offer anyone who has bought one a full refund if they wish. I do not believe we can do more.
I also notice that people mentioned Tate Ward selling Banksy prints without COA.We have done this on a number of occasions for clients who wanted to sell quickly and for whatever reason hadn't applied for the COA yet. We took these on a case by case basis and with the situation with the delays at PC well documented we didn't see this is a issue. Major auction houses do this all the time and again if the COA is not issued we would of course give a full refund.
Tate Ward selling GDP items appears to be another criticism. GDP/PC said they were not going to issue the PC certs for two years. What they didn't say is you can't/shouldn’t sell these works, they are two very different things. I am not sure how much money the people criticising us do or don't have but to some people who won items in the GDP lottery the potential sums involved are literally life changing. If they wish sell their items to improve their lives then I really don't think either they or Tate Ward should be apologists for this.
I would like to point out that we don't "make up" and use multiple forum names I’ve had the same account for 14 years. But would like thank members for the positive posts on these threads. Also a thank you to the people who have taken the time to text / email us with their support. Our last three auctions at TW were our best yet - all selling well in excess of £1m with a sell through rate of over 80% each time with the highest being 88%. We don't always get it right and clearly we have made errors here, however we have tried to rectify them to the best of our ability.
Over the past few years we have sold thousands and thousands of lots and the narrative that "Tate Ward selling Fakes" really is an unfair representation of what we have achieved as an auction house. I am not sure there is any auction house that hasn't had similar issues and I genuinely believe we have done our best to reach out to people and rectify these issues. Of course this won't be good enough for some people but what is important to us, is that it is good enough to the people that have been affected.
I do hope this explains our position clearly and again if anyone has been affected by these issues and hasn't been contacted then please do get in touch. This closes the matter for us we will not comment any further on either of these matters. If you wish to have a dialogue with us then please email myself Danny@tateward.com or Nick@tateward.com or arrange a call.
Finally we have two auctions coming up, one in Feb online with Artsy and then our next "Live" auction in March. Both are open for consignments so please get in touch with any work you are considering selling and we’ll come back to you with estimates.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Jan 5, 2021 23:42:43 GMT 1, We are in the final stages of contacting/examining/refunding where necessary.
As I stated twice before once we have all the facts I will update this thread with the outcome. I appreciate it may not be to everyone here’s preferred timescale, but having not heard back from some buyers the situation is out of my control. So I’d ask for some further patience to allow us to present the facts.

As I stated twice before once we have all the facts I will update this thread with the outcome. I appreciate it may not be to everyone here’s preferred timescale, but having not heard back from some buyers the situation is out of my control. So I’d ask for some further patience to allow us to present the facts.

Tate Ward selling fakes!, by daniel3886 on Dec 20, 2020 21:56:00 GMT 1, I’m still waiting for Nick to contact me.. He has my name and number .. nothing yet Thanks for the update. That is disappointing given the assurances previously given. Hope you get sorted.
Nick PM’d you directly on the day of your first post and hasn’t had a reply. If you can’t see it or are struggling to find it please mail him directly Nick@tateward.com

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 12, 2020 13:47:35 GMT 1, Tate Ward clearly don’t care about what’s been going on, they have just posted on IG that their current PB poster has beaten the estimate - what a joke ! of course they can claim to be using a stock image, which is likely. if they’re not and this is the actual item for sale then it’s obviously not that bright, can understand them giving a fuck you to the forum in light of this thread, it’s one reaction at least, but it’s also a fuck you to the law/police which never ends well..
As stated before the Petrol Bomb in this sale came with rock tight provenance from Jo Brooks. It was not a stock image used it was an image of the actual print. The consigner of the piece actually re stated the provenance here as there was someone who still didn’t believe it was genuine.
As I also stated earlier in the week our energy was being directed at the sale we had on which finished on Wednesday.
Now we are post sale resolving this is our focus. Not all buyers have responded so we will be contacting those still to respond.
As we’ve stated before and have shown here, we are fully willing and prepared to refund any buyer if their purchase is proven not to be authentic.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 12, 2020 13:20:27 GMT 1, Hi all, first time poster. Huge thanks for those who started the thread and everyone who has shared info. We (husband and I) received an email from Tate on the 5th of this month, informing us the Banksy Petrol Bomb print we bought in Nov 2019 may be fake and asking us to send it back in. Looking at the pics in this thread, it doesn’t look like ours is authentic. We have responded to the email but have yet to hear back; we’ll wait a few more days before re-querying. We’re really disappointed 😞. On a happier note, I am getting a pure evil “I am a unicorn” print for Xmas!
Rachel, we will issue a full refund to you plus any framing costs. You’ll have a response ASAP.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 2, 2020 20:04:37 GMT 1, One of a few businesses to have done well through the pandemic and to have ruined the business model by its own imcompetence We are not perfect, but we are able to learn from our mistakes. I am now going to spend my time and energy contacting, collecting and determining the authenticity of all the Tate Ward sales. I will update here once I have those facts. I will not post answers that I do not know to be 100% true so I’d appreciate people allowing us to concentrate on resolving the issue and not bombarding this thread with more speculation and unfounded conjecture.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 2, 2020 19:50:54 GMT 1, Please reach out to Nick he is dealing with anything he sold privately but they are being dealt with in exactly the same way. If you need his details drop me a pm Can you tell how many copies have been sold by Nick ? Samir21 I’ll be delighted to answer your question if you post it under your normal forum name.
Forgive me if I’m not prepared to respond to someone who has created this account purely for this thread. Are you one of the buyers? If so please contact myself or Nick and we’ll remedy this for you as we’ve laid out in previous posts.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 2, 2020 16:21:09 GMT 1, All clients are being offered an unequivocal refund firstly. If they wish to have it inspected then we will do that covering all costs Any that are found to be fake will be destroyed. There are 14 sales in question. I will update here once this matter has been resolved. Consigners details are not public domain so cannot be shared openly. Until the authenticity of each poster is confirmed I feel it’s unproductive to speculate any further.
have you been compensating? you personally lost over $6000 dollars
[br Quote in reference to the above , noted a fake , refunded , not asked to return or destroy / dispose of Edit , some buyers are now editing their previous posts ?
All owners will be asked to return items that are being refunded. This is purely so we can guarantee they are destroyed and taken out of circulation.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 1, 2020 12:59:33 GMT 1, Buyers are encouraged to satisfy themselves on the provenance and authenticity of any work they are considering bidding on. So the onus is on the buyer to check if a piece in an auction is real before bidding, not the auction house to make sure it's real before selling? Seems a bit backward
As an auction house we do the upmost to present work that we believe to be authentic. Further to protect our buyers we offer a money back guarantee. The ultimate decision on weather to bid or not on a work rests with the buyer. We always welcome open and transparent conversations about the provenance for works we sell.
Clearly we have failed in this case and that is something that I feel hugely disappointed from a professional point of view. It does not mean we are incapable of spotting anything fake moving forward. But I understand the need to rebuild trust with our customers is important and something we will put at the front of our priorities.

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 1, 2020 12:40:45 GMT 1, We have always and will continue to offer a 100% money back authenticity guarantee on all works we sell. This is the first time we’ve needed to show that we will honour that promise but we welcome the opportunity.
Buyers are encouraged to satisfy themselves on the provenance and authenticity of any work they are considering bidding on.
I’ve never made any secret of my involvement in Tate Ward but for the sake of transparency I have added my position to the signature on my profile.
(After checking I already had that on my signature but it’s only viewable on the desktop version)

Banksy • Tesco Petrol Bomb Poster, by daniel3886 on Dec 1, 2020 0:55:37 GMT 1, Today we began contacting all buyers of Petrol Bomb Posters that have been purchased Via Tate Ward to offer an inspection against a reference copy to confirm weather genuine or fake then issue a full refund as requested by the client. We will pay refunds immediately and take up the matter with the consigners separately.
On behalf of myself and the team I want to apologise wholeheartedly for this situation. Our reputation is of the upmost importance to us and anything that diminishes it or brings into question our expertise and knowledge is something we take very seriously. Problems are going to occur whilst running a business, for me how they are addressed is the true measure of those involved.
On a personal note, Nick has been my business partner for 3 years and during that time he has always acted with the highest levels of integrity. I know any poster he has sold privately will be refunded if found to be fake or at the buyers request. I do not believe for one moment he had any prior knowledge that the posters were not genuine.
The poster in our current sale comes with email provenance from Jo Brooks I’m 100% sure it’s genuine and inspection is welcome in person at any point prior to the sale on 9th December.
The dedication has been changed on the 10 x Di faced tenners and book it’s actually dedicated from “Team Laz” not Steve Lazarides’s himself. The notes have been checked under a x10 loop and are genuine. Again inspection is welcome anytime pre sale.

TateWard • Art Auctions 🇬🇧, by daniel3886 on Nov 24, 2020 21:25:45 GMT 1, I hear people’s frustration with the format. These sales are held on Artsy’s platform and currently it does not allow for staggered finish or time added for bids in the last few minutes. It’s something that is under discussion with Artsy currently.
Full results inc BP are on our website now. There are some inaccuracies in the quoted prices above so please check there.
If a lot you’re interested in has passed then please contact nick@tateward.com for all aftersale enquiries
Biggest Artsy only auction we’ve ever done £937k total hammer. Highest sell through rate 85% currently with aftersales to add. Lowest number of lots in a sale with the highest average value.
As mentioned above the next sale is a “Live all platform sale” on the 9th Dec.

You’ll need to photo your ID and send a picture of yourself for AML regulations. The process works best on a phone I’m told.

TateWard • Art Auctions 🇬🇧, by daniel3886 on Nov 13, 2020 21:48:54 GMT 1, It's like a carbon copy of the sale a few weeks ago - same prints. Luckily not 500 lots again. They really shouldn't put stickers and peckham Rocks in between prints. Less is more here... Edit: Just checked 111 lots again...
We currently do 4 “Live” auctions which are larger in lot numbers 200-300 approx and are “all platform” sales
We then have 4 Artsy only timed sales with 100-200 lots
I understand you cannot please everyone, we have lots of buyers who are buying ephemera and certificated works so whilst I accept it may not be completely to your liking there is a very strong level of interest in these works.
The sale has been live for 3 days and 52/112 lots have buying bids on them already which is a record for one of these sales.

I can assure you it’s not by design we are curating the sales amongst the works we are being offered. Feel free to let me know what you’d like to see more of? I’m always keen to expand the breadth of work we bring to the market.
What is tending to happen is that people see results on works they own and think I’d take that for mine and get in touch.
