Signed Black and White Morons, by jam on Jun 16, 2007 18:43:44 GMT 1, Some insightful comments above on Hirst related to Banksy. The Valium prints and alike on ebay are a very sketchy buy unless you have them inspected by eyestorm. There are MANY fakes floating around, I doubt people are getting authentic pieces for ยฃ3-4000 seeing that if they have proper provenance and certification from eyestorm they bring ยฃ10-20,000 at major auction houses like Sothebys.
I can understand the comments about Galleries buying some of this for the buy & hold or for general inventory, but I am friends with a few gallery owners and when we debated the current market on Banksy they said they wouldn't be buying much from ebay as a gallery, that there are other channels they get artists work from (keep in mind they don't sell his prints, it was just a dinner discussion). Who knows... just seems anything that has price increases in the secondary market this quickly is being acted on by much more than collector demand to me.

Signed Black and White Morons, by jam on Jun 15, 2007 9:47:52 GMT 1, While I don't want to call it hysteria, it surely seems like quite a frenzy. I do see good value in the market for unsigned prints in relation to the cost of signed prints, but I am afraid the people buying to fill holes in their collections are the minority at the moment. I think the majority of the buyers paying very high prices are getting worried about missing out on the continued rise and therefore feel that they need to purchase at whatever price it takes just to be holding anything as or if the prices continue to rise. It becomes a self perpetuating market and that is not a good thing in my eyes.
I have been buying the prints I really want hanging on my walls, and I am not in a position that if the prices were cut in 1/4 tomorrow that I would regret buying any of them nor would I be crushed that I paid todays prices. I do think the people buying out of reaction to the price increases and talk of easy money and a sure investment will be in a bad spot if the market goes the other way. It concerns me to hear people talking about maxed credit cards and one guy mentioned he needed to sell a few prints to make his mortgage. These are not good signs. Their buying seems more reactionary to the frenzied price raises than to buying a print because it means something to them. Time will tell...

Signed Black and White Morons, by jam on Jun 15, 2007 8:12:37 GMT 1, Its the famous ebay "I must be the high bidder at all times" syndrome.
All this time I thought the important part was to be the high bidder at the end...

Wanted - Micallef Angel Bomber 1 #231, by jam on Jul 2, 2007 1:53:38 GMT 1, OK... well I have Angel Bomber 2 #231 ;D
Seriously... its probably worth doing as I am sure people wouldn't mind the opportunity to have matched numbers, even if they don't actively pursue it.

Wanted - Micallef Angel Bomber 1 #231, by jam on Jul 1, 2007 22:48:39 GMT 1, crackawacka - I have learned to embrace the OCD, there is nothing wrong with it and if that means you have to own prints with matching numbers, so be it! I will let you know if I see your numbers anywhere so you can pursue your match!

Banksy โข Flower Thrower โข Love is in the Air, by jam on Jul 12, 2007 16:00:52 GMT 1, I think it is more than reasonable in price, considering the huge leap everything has taken across the board. I would expect a mint with paperwork LIITA would be worth around 2,200, so this one seems fair to me.

** Micallef - Girl with the Red Dress **, by jam on Jul 7, 2007 18:02:50 GMT 1, Preface: I own a few Micallef prints and I am actively buying more now. That being said, I am concerned about the buying climate of Anthony's work at the moment. Prices have doubled across the board on many of his prints and it would seem this jump is largely due to the fact he is having a show in LA this fall. I believe many people are buying because they think the same price increases that happened subsequent the Banksy LA show will happen with Micallef. Speculative buying makes for a shaky market and I fear those paying top dollar for their Micallefs from here to the show will be in a bad spot if they think the prices will leap after the show. Perhaps I am wrong and I can look at this post in my archives next year and laugh about being off... but if I were a betting man, I would not be buying a Micallef print at these heightened prices unless you are OK with the possibility it will be worth the same or possibly less in the fall when guys who are "investing" start trying to fee up capital.

Shill Bidding..., by jam on May 7, 2007 18:11:19 GMT 1, I'm sure there are some rich art dealers that wake up and go "hmmm I think Its about time Barcode makes 9.5K today " whilst stroking their obese white cat.
The gravity of this comment is truer than you may think. I recently put a Warhol I own on Ebay and with a very low buy now price through a art broker friends user ID. We received email from a few different galleries that we were undermining the value of Warhols and we should raise the price. In the end, we had 3 auction listings and all 3 were bought using the Buy Now... but no bidder came through on payment. It was as if the competing galleries were out to sabotage my sale, or at the very least, were attempting to prop up the market some so as to justify their exorbitant gallery pricing.
