getting work into a gallery, by RetroCanvas on Sept 30, 2011 11:02:28 GMT 1, I started painting and selling stuff on ebay about 8 years ago.
Then I made my own site and showed some work at some shows.
Got a few features in some magazines, one being FHM which was a lucky break.
Having work in a gallery is not all that. The commission is very high so you either have to take less for your work so the final price is affordable or risk selling very little at high prices.
If you are starting out I advise to just get a body of work together and make it availible for people to see (website, forums etc) if people like your stuff then you'll get interest and gallery features will come. It's rarely a quick process.
Good luck and get some photos up here for all to see.

might be a stupid question, but how do you/did you get started in the art world? do you just wander into a gallery with a canvas? start up your own website and sell from there? email a portfolio around the houses? would love to know how you take your first steps thanks:)

New RetroCanvas, by RetroCanvas on Sept 24, 2011 16:27:40 GMT 1, thanks MrBlast,
It's funny you mention those names. Apart from Lord Finesse I have designs for all of them. You've made me dig out the Slick Rick one so this could be my next peice.
Hopefully the forum will like the new style i'm going to go for.
Retro
I think these are good but I do agree with the comments that they look a bit too clean. If you could highlight your creativity and personal interpretation in your work a bit more I think you could really start making some good pieces. Also as a massive hiphop fan, if you did this I would be taking a few off your hands. Let me know if you decide to do any old school mcs (KRS, Rakim, Slick Rick, PE, Lord Finesse, etc....)

New RetroCanvas, by RetroCanvas on Sept 22, 2011 19:01:02 GMT 1, All good comments so thanks to all,
Apart from the Jay Z canvas in this thread all my work is painted. I agree that the style is very clean. I've been working on some more 'less clean' pieces although a very neat painted piece does look impressive in the flesh even if it has been designed in PS.
Photoshop is used by most stencil artists so I don't see the issue with that. Not that anyone said there was an issue. It's a tool that should be used if it helps. You could have a similar argument about photorealism... maybe
Regarding subject matter. Most of my paintings you'll see are commissions so I haven't chosen it. Although my original work is mainly portraits of people I'm a fan of or admire in some way.
As long as some people like them I'll keep posting my stuff up, these comments have definately helped.
Thanks again

Anthony Lister "Fan Boy" Prints at POW, by RetroCanvas on Jul 28, 2011 14:27:24 GMT 1, Exactly my thoughts....
Shame
Retro
I really like Lister, however none off those would get anywhere near my wall. Shame. I would have liked a nice 1/1. Maybe there will be another chance.

DIY Framing, by RetroCanvas on May 12, 2011 20:10:19 GMT 1, I recently used www.ezeframe.co.uk/ to order a few bespoke sized frames and mounts.
They were cheap, but thats all i needed, and their site was easy to use.
Just thought I'd big them up for exceeding my expectations. Very rare these days for companies to do that!

Banksy Street Art, by RetroCanvas on May 6, 2011 14:40:09 GMT 1, I bought my first print in 2004 when you could pick and choose what one you wanted on picturesonwalls. So this was done 2 years before. He would have had a very small following I imagine.

He was still pretty much nobody then though ...'spose so des77, he probably wasn't on everyone's radar then.

The Art of BAST, by RetroCanvas on Apr 18, 2011 12:29:26 GMT 1, I guess I just haven't given him the time he deserves. One day maybe I'll see some work in person and change my mind too.
Cheers Dappy,
Retro
RetroCanvas ... I did not like BAST for a loooong time ... did not get the multiple eyes, things shooting off all over the place and then I saw a collection of work in real life. the construction of the pieces is not all over the place (unneat). It actually takes you on a journey around the canvas/board/print and juxtaposes imagery that we know. There will always be some pieces from any artist that do not work - but overall I have come to love the BAST. His collages work a lot, lot better then most artists' collages that I have seen ... and he does go off in different directions as well, eg French Kiss (I am still not sure myself about this one) and the rest of his Botulism show at Laz in Rathbone which was great. (BIG IMO )

The Art of BAST, by RetroCanvas on Apr 17, 2011 14:36:50 GMT 1, I feel that I need to say that I don't realy like the un-neat nature of BAST's stuff. Not that I just like neat art but I've never really liked BAST.
Anyone with me?

Art Fags Cause Cancer!, by RetroCanvas on Apr 8, 2011 13:46:10 GMT 1, I'm being picky, but I get put off by how all the 'a's have identical smudges below them. Drawbacks of using a pre-made font i guess.
I get this with all fonts though, I always have to tweek things that are repeated, but I'm a bit sad like that....
Not a dig, just a comment.

Your latest Art Purchase?, by RetroCanvas on Apr 8, 2011 12:42:29 GMT 1, Yeah, you need a 36" x 24" and you won't need to chop up your poster.
You will need to mount it though as the poster is an odd shape.
In mine, some of the sides are hidden. I didn't really want to spend a couple of hundred on a bespoke frame so made do with this.
I like it :-)

really like your frame there retro , thanks for pointing me in the direction, bargain price too, This is a full size etc yeah ?

Mr Brainwash "Anonymous" Print 11th April, by RetroCanvas on Apr 8, 2011 10:29:43 GMT 1, Agree too,
I though that the bit that Banksy said about street art not being about the money in the film was totally ruined by the whole MBW story. As that was entirely about the money.
Not interested!
Retro
I have never paid attention to MBW or looked at any of his stuff on ebay until now. Iโm honestly astounded that firstly he sells out, and secondly people buy it at a premium! I only watched Exit through the gift shop once and the whole MBW thing was obviously just a huge piss take. Why anyone would buy any MBW art after watching that film is truly beyond me, even if they are deluded enough to think it will look good on a wall, or worse still, in an art folder under the bed for the fantasy retirement nest egg.
