Nola POLL who got one?, by stjohn on Nov 21, 2008 10:56:46 GMT 1, Are you tired of looking at your computer screen all day trying to get this print? Then why not draw your chair in, curl up your notes and gaze lovingly at the cheerful little number's now on EBay. It's the latest ploy from the pseudonymous mister Moneymakers and its called 'Nola' which may or may not have something to do with the fact they Feel Like Inflicting Pain.

Banksy NOLA Print on POW, by stjohn on Nov 21, 2008 10:12:20 GMT 1, Why do two of the ebay listings say edition of 500? 150311184215 120337414918 Are another 200 odd being released later? It has been confirmed that its a release of only 289 - thats it no more, and I doubt there will be an unsigned version - so if you didnt get it this time, you wont get it again, unless you buy secondary
Do we know who confirmed it? That is not confirmed on POW site.
EDIT: then again - none of Banksy's prints have editions stated on the POW site!

NEW-YORK, by stjohn on Nov 11, 2008 21:21:36 GMT 1, So it looks like the only lots sold from the Urban Artists were D*face, Denning, & the Shepard Fairey - Obama Wow.
And at that the D*Face estimates were $6000-8000 but they both went for $2400 (inc premium)!

Banksy auction results at a glance , by stjohn on Nov 6, 2008 20:40:55 GMT 1, Have found a free resource for snapshop of auction results:
www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/auction_results/artist/17104/lang/1
You can't see pics, but for prints we all know what they look like anyway.
Recent amount of UNSOLD fairly scary when you see the info presented like this, but hey, deals to be done with sellers in that case
PS - you can get this info for any artist.
Edit: but having said that, many aren't there like FAILE and NEATE?! Maybe not reliable...

Banksy Barcode Shark, by stjohn on Nov 6, 2008 18:33:12 GMT 1, >>> Conversely, the thrill of the hunt and the enjoyment of it on our walls is so much fun. <<<
That hits the nail on the head! The chase is great, the kill better and the after bit reminds you how good it all was!

Banksy Barcode Shark, by stjohn on Nov 6, 2008 18:05:11 GMT 1, Good advice there lee3. My understanding is that for import to the UK from outside the EU the 5% IS actually VAT that has been reduced from 17.5% down to 5%. I do not know what happens when for eg. you buy within the EU (say in Germany) and get charged VAT there (at whatever rate) and then import it to the UK. Can't believe you pay twice!?
C'mon lee3 - I am sure you've got the odd low absentee bid!!

Banksy Barcode Shark, by stjohn on Nov 6, 2008 16:28:02 GMT 1, Not being funny, but how do I get a piece from the auction without bidding! Maybe what pfffffffffft mean was as long as you are not sitting in the auction room and bid on line or via phone or leave a bid and are outside the US you are exempt from NY tax Is that what you meant pfffffffffft? BTW I LOVE this Barcode Shark
Ahhh. Got you - I am sure that's what he meant "bid AT the auction". So an absentee bid from outside the US would mean was being exported from there. Sorry - all makes sense now!

Banksy Barcode Shark, by stjohn on Nov 6, 2008 15:42:46 GMT 1, In Bonhams's Ts and Cs it says this: "The term โpurchase priceโ means the aggregate of (a) the bid price, (b) a PREMIUM retained by us and payable by the purchaser EQUAL TO 20% OF THE FIRST $500,000 OF THE BID PRICE, AND 12% OF THE AMOUNT OF THE BID PRICE OVER $500,000, and (c) unless the purchaser is exempt by law from the payment thereof, any California, Arizona, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington state, or other state or local sales tax (or compensating use tax) and other applicable taxes." If we in the UK bid and win, what is the NY tax, or are we exempt if it is for export to the UK, in which case we pay out own duties/tax on import? Anyone know? Thanks. So long as you dont bid at the auction you are exempt from NY tax. Considered an export.

Ranking Jose Parla?, by stjohn on Oct 25, 2008 10:28:04 GMT 1, If you want to rank an artist then take a look at www.artfacts.net which ranks artists based on a (silly?) algorithm according to exhibitions an artist has had. In part it depends on which other artists the artist in question has exhibited with (thus hopefully showing exposure).
See here how it works: www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/ranking/paragraph/3
Text from that page:
The artist ranking weighs exhibitions by using a special algorithm. Each exhibition automatically gains a certain value, called points. On a yearly basis all artists participating in exhibitions receive the sum of the points of the exhibitions involved. The higher the amount of points for an individual artist, the higher is his rank. The artist with the highest number of points will be the number 1, the artist with the second most points will be number 2 and so on.
Art institutions which collect or represent famous artists are considered more important than others. Exhibitions held in a museum with a great collection of famous artists like the 'Centre Pompidou' will receive more points than an relatively unknown private gallery.
Famous artists establish the basis of the artist ranking system since they are collected by museums or represented by galleries on an international scale. Institutions, cities and finally all exhibitions gain their points from the number and the worth of famous artists linked to them.
Parla is unranked - someone needs to update his exhibitions though:
www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/artistInfo/artist/51376/lang/1
Banksy is ranked 9932 at the moment!
www.artfacts.net/index.php/pageType/artistInfo/artist/17104/lang/1
Seems a bit of a silly way to rank artists whose work is, as is said above, subjective, but there is A benchmark out there (of some sort) if you are looking!
Some others:
Warhol - 1 Murakami - 182 Mimmo Rotella - 491
Top 100 here:

Bonhams โข Art Auctions โข London ๐ฌ๐ง, by stjohn on Oct 22, 2008 22:19:11 GMT 1, I went to the late evening view on Monday, skipped the party last night and went to Sims Reed instead my Mrs. likes flowers! The hang is really shoddy at bonham's, with all that space, why did they cram the urban sale into that tiny room and give up the main room for the terrible Vision 21 Evening sale? Am I loving Bonham's no not really.
Thats the Vision 21 Evening sale where 10/59 lots sold
