City of Colours Winter Showcase - Birmingham 6th Dec, by razorwire on Oct 30, 2014 13:07:43 GMT 1, Just a heads up as I know a lot of people here enjoyed the main City of Colours in September and I thought those of you that are fairly local will be interested in this event they are doing in December
Facebook page
City of Colours is back! Come and join us for our winter showcase, involving over 30 local artists, a huge Christmas market hall, affordable art sale, DJs, retro gaming, graffiti battle on NYC style subway carriage, screen printing, break dancing and graffiti workshops, and lots of mulled wine and tasty street food!
Artists on the line-up include: Philth, N4T4, AsOne, Deeds, Vomet, Craig Earp, Mustard Tiger, Setdebelleza, Cujo, Foka Wolf, Mose, Ziner, Ragoe, Void One, Mad Wew, Mr Savage, The Trip, Chunxx, Goosensie, Wolfe Muther, Meg Egg, Goon, Vacant, 13 Skulls, Jawa, Posh One Zero, Ruth Porter, Em Cloake, Rebel Gunslingers, Wilson, and more to be announced including a few special guests!
Two quid for the subway train battle sounds good to me:

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by razorwire on Oct 29, 2014 13:10:33 GMT 1, To my shame, I've not heard of this lot; but crackin' tune. Will have a search, but any recommendations would be appreciated. Cheers. They released three albums before they split up. I think most people would consider the second one, Mclusky Do Dallas, to be the best so that's probably the best starting point. There's also a compilation, mcluskyism, that was released after they split up.
If you find it's something you like then you should also check out Future of the Left which features two ex-mclusky members.

What Music are you listening to at the moment ?, by razorwire on Oct 29, 2014 12:22:55 GMT 1, Love that Craze routine.
Currently listening to loads of mclusky in preparation for the sort-of-reunion charity gigs in November - lucky enough to have tickets for the second one

The ยฃ50 Art Thread, by razorwire on Sept 29, 2014 12:28:05 GMT 1, Thanks razorwire. Never heard of him. Cool stuff. Bought a 12" Vinyl Record. ยฃ15 delivered for a one of a kind signed original. Happy days No worries, nice to spead the word. He does a lot of decent pieces around the walls of Birmingham but seems to be a bit of well kept secret still outside the city. His prices in his shop are always very good too, can't knock cheap originals at those prices.
Bit of a shame that tas re sending the cans overseas - you'd have thought that because they are empty they would be ok to send in the post but maybe he's had problems in the past. I'd be happy to buy one for you and post it on but if it's not going to get through customs at your end it's probably not worth the risk just in case it doesn't get to you.

Birmingham Street Art Festival 2014 Sep 6th and Kickstarter, by razorwire on Mar 12, 2014 11:38:11 GMT 1, I've not seen this mentioned so far and reckon some of you maybe interested..., Brimingham Street Art Festival is happening Saturday 6th September 2014 in the Digbeth area of the city, it's free and should be a great day out.
There is a kickstarter currently running to help raise funds. It's made the target now but is still worth backing if you can, and there's some nice rewards such as a signed small canvas for a ยฃ20 pledge.
Here's the blurb from the kickstarter page:
Following the successes of See No Evil and Upfest in Bristol, on the 6th September we are bringing to Birmingham a new and exciting street art festival. A celebration of urban art forms we are inviting 80 artists to come and paint, with break dancing, DJs, live illustration battles, & other innovative and engaging visual arts.
The festival includes a partnership of over 20 expert organisations including Street Art Birmingham, The Bench 504, GraffitiArtist.com, The Custard Factory, Boxxed, UTC and PST.
Artists from all over the UK and wider will come and transform this part of the city, including the likes of of Roa, Broken Fingaz, Aryz, Phlegm and TATS CRU. From large murals, smaller walls to some pretty quirky canvases, the event will take place across venues such as the Custard Factory, Boxxed and the Old Crown.
The festival will host four music stages, incorporating some of Birminghamโs biggest promoters, featuring hip hop, drum & bass, jungle, dub, reggae, soul and funk.
A number of live performances will take place across the venues including break dancing, beat boxers, live illustration battles, cinema screenings, and other exciting visual art forms.
With graffiti, dance and music workshops happening throughout the festival, people of all ages will have the chance to get involved!

Berlin..... Talk to me :), by razorwire on Jan 28, 2014 12:01:31 GMT 1, Awesome city, I'm off back there myself soon and can't wait. Not sure of your tastes, where you are staying or if you've been before so here's some stuff I enjoyed.
In you are staying around the North East of the city then Prenzlauer Berg has loads of great bars in Schรถnhauser Allee which is the main street. Check out White Trash Fast Food for bands and just over the road is a great bar called 8mm that shows films with Bassy Club next door which usually has something good going on. There's loads of other great bars around there, well worth a wander. The TV Tower, Fernsehturm, is just down from there and gives nice views of the vity but if it's a weekend you might have a 20 minute queue then have to come back 90 minutes later to go up.
If you've not been before I'm sure you'll certainly be going to the East Side Gallery to check out the graffiti on the wall so if it's a nice day check out Yaam whilst you are there near one of the big remaining stretches, it's an awesome sandy Caribbean beach bar overlooking the river right in the middle of Berlin. You'll probably find it by following the music you hear whilst wandering roung the east side gallery. Not sure if you are interested in the more usual tourist destinations such as Checkpoint Charlie, the DDR museum etc but all well worth a visit.
If you are there on a Sunday then thereโs an amazing park called Mauer Park which has crazy outdoor karaoke on a massive stage with thousands of people watching โ I hate karaoke more than anything in the world and I enjoyed it so thatโs how good it is! There loads of bands and drummers and people making noise as the evening draws in that gives it a sort of festival vibe so it's a great place to come and chill with a picnic on a Sunday.
If you like football then if they are home go see Herta Berlin at the Olympic Stadium for the experience as itโs dirt cheap (14 euros a ticket plus there's often 25% off vouchers)
There's lots of stuff I wanted to do but just haven't had time yet, especially the old abandoned theme park called Spreepark which looks amazing in a Scooby Doo sort of way. It used to be a case of jumping the fence and avoiding security but there's actual organised tours these days.
Or you can just forget all that stuff and get hammered as thereโs cool bars everywhere.
Price wise it is pretty reasonable, probably about the same as eating out in most cities in the UK. Beers are about 3-4 euros each, beers from off licences etc are dirt cheap. The Berlin welcome card is worth getting as it gives you which gives you unlimited train/underground travel and discount off most things (normally about 25%) for about 22 euros each.
Hope that helps, if you want any more info just drop me a line

Anamorphic Illusions., by razorwire on Jan 28, 2014 11:36:36 GMT 1, Myself and a friend went through a phase of making loads of those moving head things like the T-Rex above, based on Jerry Andus's original dragon. My mate did a massive one, not quite as big as the T-Rex but still very impressive. They are great fun for kids and only take 2 minutes to make - just print this off and get folding www.jclahr.com/science/Illusions/3d/dragon.jpg

SECRET SANTA 2013 CHAT ONLY!!!, by razorwire on Jan 6, 2014 10:24:06 GMT 1, I don't understand why people don't mark items as gift... It probably was - it's a common misunderstanding but marking an item as a gift doesn't mean you won't pay customs duty and VAT, it just raises the VAT threshold very slightly which can save money on lower value items. If it's coming from outside the EU to the UK then even if it's marked as a gift you will still pay VAT if the value is over ยฃ36, as well as customs duty if it's over ยฃ135 (although that gets waived if the amount of duty payable is under ยฃ9). All that marking it as a gift does is raise the threshold for vat from ยฃ15 to ยฃ36, so that would have no impact in this case. You could of course declare a very low value for customs purposes but not only is that a bit naughty but if it goes missing in transit you're only going to get that value back.
As for claiming it back, in a word no unfortunately - I have been succesful in the past when a customs declaration has been incorrectly filled in by the sender (they included the carriage in the declared value taking it over the vat limit) but it's a long and arduous task and if it's a legit duty charge you'd have a nightmare trying to prove otherwise.

Martha Cooper ๐บ๐ธ Subway Art Book โข New York Graffiti , by razorwire on Jan 4, 2014 11:25:52 GMT 1, razorwire - I'm currently reading 'The KLF. Chaos, Magic & the Band Who Burned a Million Pounds'. Your avatar inspired this reply, and is a reflection of the synchronicities contained in their story. It's a cracking book isn't it? I would recommend it to absolutely anyone with even the vaguest interest in them, it's a great read and about as far away from your average music biography as it is possible to get, with a unique way of telling things so that even those that think they've heard the story before will get something out of it.

Martha Cooper ๐บ๐ธ Subway Art Book โข New York Graffiti , by razorwire on Jan 3, 2014 21:13:06 GMT 1, One of my biggest reqrets in recent years is not getting a copy of this - for some reason the launch completely passed me by, and I didn't find out until it was too late. Subway Art had such a massive impact on my life at the time, and I still dig my original copy out on a regular basis. I did manage to get to hear Henry speak about it and chat briefly with him when he was over in the UK a few years back but I would kill for a Marty print.

LAMINATE MEDIA - BUYER & ARTIST BEWARE, by razorwire on Dec 13, 2013 11:34:44 GMT 1, I just do not understand these guys AT ALL. They have great artists why not make some nice prints be up front and KILL IT!? That's the puzzling thing- they sell some good stuff from great artists at decent prices, and if that got their act together I'd order a lot more from them and I'm sure others would too. As I'd said before everything I've ordered has turned up, albeit after a lengthy wait, and I've been pleased with it but the more I hear horror stories like yours the less inclined I am to risk another order. If they could ship on time, or at least be honest and upfront with people about delays, and sort their customer service out they could be making an absolute killing, it just doesn't make sense to me.
