Things to see around the West Midlands..., by razorwire on Dec 6, 2018 14:48:07 GMT 1, I was more of a House of God regular if anyone remembers that fruit cake?
HOG is still going, next one is 8th March next year.

High Vis Street Culture Festival - today in Birmingham, free, by razorwire on Sept 8, 2018 10:00:32 GMT 1, Bit short notice but I suspect this one has flown under the radar for a lot of people as it's the first one (and it's clashing with Cheltenham) and thought people might be interested.
Today in Brum at the Custard Factory, family friendly street culture festival - plenty of graff and art going on but also dance battles, live bands, and MCs, DJs, comics etc. A whole load of stuff is undercover too so it won't be a washout if it rains all day.
There's been a couple of nice peices go up from N4T4 and PHILTH and it promises to be a really good day out. Free too obviously, so if you are local pop down and support the scene - Birmingham needs a decent event like this now that City of Colours appears to be dead. Artists listed include WILL BARRAS, SI MITCHELL, BOSWELL, GENT 48, FOKA WOLF, TITLE, ROOTS, POSEA, KORSA, JAY SHARPLES, ZOOKI, ZINER, LADY SANITY, DEEDS, THE TRIP, CUJO CUSSLER, HAQ 123, PWDR MNKY, PERCY FILTH, LEW STRINGER, SIMON MYERS, JAKE and lots more
www.facebook.com/highvisfest/?ref=br_rs
"The event, featuring graffiti, street art, dance battles, comic art zines, illustration, skateboarding, live music, workshops, and streetfood, is curated by a collective comprising of some of the finest artists to come out of BC."

What Camera Do You Use To Photograph Your Art?, by razorwire on Jan 19, 2017 11:11:45 GMT 1, When you stop to think about it, it is pretty amazing how far cameras on phones have come in a relatively short space of time - go back only a decade or so and using my phone for anything other that throwaway snaps seemed a crazy idea, and yet now my S7 Edge turn out really decent pictures. A decade or so ago a grainy VGA 640 x 480 pixels camera spec on a phone was still common, and the iphone still only introduced a 2 megapixel camera (with no flash or autofocus) at it's launch just over 10 years ago. Fast forward to now and look at the technology we have in our pockets, images from phone cameras on flagship models are very close to those from actual cameras apart from the obvious lack of optical zoom etc., and for most people their phone is their primary camera now.
Whilst it is amazing having such a good camera on me all the time in my phone, and the convenience and the fact it's always with me means it's what I use the most by a long way, I do find taking an actual camera out with me on a planned trip is much more rewarding. I only bought my first 'proper' camera last year (A Panasonic GX7 as it was going cheap at ยฃ300 with the cracking 20mm prime lens) but I've really enjoyed the whole process of learning about photography to get to shooting fully manual, and really enjoy taking photos with it. I went for a M43 camera as I though I'd be more likely to use it if it was smaller as opposed to lugging a great big DSLR out with me - it just about fits in a jacket pocket with a pancake lens so I'm not carrying a huge bag out. For me the results certainly justify the minor hassle of taking it with me.

Secret Santa 2016 - the List thread , by razorwire on Dec 5, 2016 13:02:38 GMT 1, - p2g will entice you ton ensure your goods, but actually don't cover art so you have no recourse Good point, it's shocking that they encourage you to pay the extra for insurance on items that aren't covered. Even if you are using them for non-art stuff in the future take care as you will also see there's loads of stuff not covered (I know from experience that cameras/lenses are excluded from compensation for example but the list of items not covered also includes delicate and fragile items, which could mean just about anything!)

Secret Santa 2016 - the List thread , by razorwire on Dec 5, 2016 10:53:47 GMT 1, I'd take those international posting dates with a pinch of salt - last year I posted mine on the cutoff day for the USA and it didn't arrive until well into January.

City of Colours Festival Birmingham , by razorwire on Jun 11, 2016 10:31:11 GMT 1, Phelgm's been working on his piece this week, think he finished it yesterday. It's in Digbeth, Coventry Street opposite Hennesey's bar, if anyone wants a peek ahead of next week.

Glastonbury Festival, by razorwire on Jun 11, 2016 10:28:36 GMT 1, I'll be there too, can't wait although I'm slightly apprehensive about the weather after seeing footage from Download this weekend - it gave me flashbacks to 2005 when we woke up to find a small river running through our tent and all our clothes, phones, food etc floating about. Still, nothing you can do about that but just crack on and drink your way through it...

Glastonbury Festival, by razorwire on Jun 9, 2016 13:46:22 GMT 1, It's a lot of money but not overpriced, especially when you compare it to gig prices and pretty much every other festival these days - Reading, Leeds, and all the other big festivals are a similar price and you get a hell of a lot more for your money at Glastonbury over the 5 days than you do anywhere else. We got to a lot of small festivals and even they are pricey these days - I've just come back from Lunar just outside Birmingham and even that was ยฃ119 for 3 days of acts on two stages. Even my absolute favourite festival in the UK, Supernormal, is 80 odd quid now and many of the other small 500-2000 capacity ones like I am fond of have are around the ยฃ100 mark. There's exceptions obviously but it's just a fact that in general festivals are getting very pricey.
I think it's also important to appreciate how the festival has improved over the years since the superfence stopped everyone getting in free, and even in the last decade or so it's come on so much that many parts of it are completely unrecognisable. It's now a lot more than just the standard 'bands in circus tents' you get elsewhere. I love all the newer additions and the structures in Block 9, Unfairground, The Temple etc are all still mindblowing each year.

City of Colours Festival Birmingham , by razorwire on May 25, 2016 11:15:06 GMT 1, Just realised this is coming up fast - I don't think it's been mentioned yet and I know there's a few people on here that went last time around. It's a great day out, free and deserves some support (particularly as they had to postpone it last year due to funding issues)
Over 120 artists (DANK, Inkie, My Dog Sighs, Dale Grimshaw, Broken Fingaz and another 115 or so including lots of local talent like Liskbot, Foka Wolf, Hoakser, Tempo 33 etc). Here's the full list:
Artists
Plus loads of other stuff going on, artist talks, b-boy competitions, skate ramp, workshops etc
What's on
Here's their blurb:
City of Colours Street Art Festival is one of the UKs largest celebrations of graffiti, street art and urban culture, and we are returning to the streets of Digbeth on 18 June 2016. This multi-cultural, award-winning event, brings together communities from across the city and wider.... and what's more it's FREE!
We have invited over 120 street artists to join us to paint, draw and exhibit their work on as many walls and other canvases as we can find!
An event for all the family, the festival will be spread over 15 venues, with three new music stages, a larger range of exciting performances and participatory activities, a bigger market hall and larger range of street food! โข We will be bringing you eight music stages, hosted by some of Birminghamโs biggest promoters. There will be a diverse range of DJ's and bands featuring live hip-hop, reggae, dub, jungle to jazz, funk, soul, Jungle drum n bass and much more!
โข There will be a skate ramp supplied by King Ramps which will be open to the public along with some demonstrations from pro skaters. Huge range of exciting performances from beat-boxers, b-boys and spoken word artists to rap battles and artists painting in live graffiti and illustration battles. โข Cinema screenings, workshops in graffiti art, break-dance, DJing, spoken word, retro gaming, screen-printing, and our huge doodle wall will be available throughout the weekend for everyone to get involved in.
โข The market hall will be returning with local independents selling their creations, and our huge affordable art sale will ensure you can take a piece of City of Colours 2016 home with you!
The event will bring together family and friends of all ages to enjoy the electric atmosphere that is City of Colours!

Interesting report on Bots for those that don't believe, by razorwire on May 4, 2016 14:03:30 GMT 1, could you get one for Glastonbury tickets? I can never get them, its rather sad We've been able to get them every year without fail for the last 15 years or so - having a few of you trying seems to be the secret to success so try getting a couple of mates roped in to help you next year. There will be another 'secret' resale coming up shortly when the refund deadline passes so you've still got a slim chance, even at this late stage. It was the Monday after refund day last year. Monitor glastonbury.seetickets.com for any changes and you might get lucky.

I can't believe this Art is still available!, by razorwire on Apr 7, 2016 11:57:40 GMT 1,
Given the news of the allegations against Bambaataa* that came to light in the last week I reckon these might be available for a while yet.
* Which I'm absolutely gutted about by the way, he was one of my childhood heroes and responsible for some cracking DJ sets when I've seen him in recent years so it's disturbing to read lots of things now implying that it was a bit of an open secret in the industry, making him the hip hop Jimmy Savile.

Just a quick bump as this arrived today. As mentioned above I have ended up with a spare so does anyone in the UK want it at cost price before I offer it elsewhere?

Martha Cooper ๐บ๐ธ Subway Art Book โข New York Graffiti , by razorwire on Feb 8, 2016 13:15:33 GMT 1, Just to echo what others had said I found Martha absolutely enthralling at the talk, it was delightful stuff and I could have listened to her speak for days. I managed to hot foot it down to Stolen Space yesterday before we left London for a quick look at the show too which was great - even my 6 year thought it was brilliant. Slightly gutted to be told I'd just missed Martha at the gallery, but it was probably for the best as I'd only have made an idiot of myself speaking to her.

Martha Cooper ๐บ๐ธ Subway Art Book โข New York Graffiti , by razorwire on Feb 3, 2016 19:43:53 GMT 1, Any recommendations for a close to hand pre-talk pub then, is The Star of Kings as good as any? And it looks like one of my friends probably can't make it, as it's sold out does anyone here want the ticket before I offer it back to go to the waiting list?
