I contacted the seller about the authenticity and this is what he said...
"This painting was a one off done by KAWS. My cousin and KAWS went to art school in New York together and KAWS gave this to my cousin when they graduated back in 1996. My cousin gave me this painting back in 2003 and I have had it hanging on my wall since. The painting is signed on the back however it is framed and sealed. Since the was a one off painting and was not in a series, it does not have the COA since it was a gift to my cousin from KAWS. Rest assured that this painting is authentic as I am a legit seller and I have sold signed Futura paintings, signed Mark Gonzales paintings, signed Shepard Fairey prints, signed Lance Mountain paintings, signed Evan Hecox prints, etc."
Sounds possible. Here was my reply,
"I'd be very interested if you or I could get it authenticated by KAWS. How much would you want to end the auction and do this right having it authenticated first? What is your cousin's name?"
His reply,
"I'll try and see if I can have KAWS authenticate it some way or another. I'm going to let the auction run it's course bc I have had many inquiries about it."
Then me again,
"Not much point continuing the auction unless it is fake. Get it checked out first. You will get a lot more after the fact. You would have to be a real sucker to buy it without authentication. Unless you know its fake.
You never said what your cousin's name was?"
His response,
"His name is Boyce Cummings"
So I googled Boyce Cummings, found an email address and checked out the story. Boyce Cummings doesn't know anything about the painting or the seller. Mr Cummings seemed like a really nice guy but he was in no way related to the seller.
So maybe it was a different Boyce Cummings? Nope. Kaws went to the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1996. So did this Mr. Cummings.
In fact when I google "School of Visual Arts in New York 1996" the first thing that comes up is an article on Boyce Cummings.
Clearly that's how the seller pulled that name out of his arse.
So long story short the listing is too good to be true.

I thought the same thing but thought there may be a chance that he first did it in art school. It was worth sending a few emails to confirm on the 1 in a million chance it was real and would go for a reasonable sum.
I think it is ok to dream, you just need to wake up before the money clears

Kaws is his own worst enemy when it comes to fakes. Seems he doesn't care.

The first one is real,I have that exact one and it is from a set of 3 from elms Lester show in the early 2000's The 2nd one is a fake. Hope this helps |

If I saw this earlier I could have tried to reach out to his studio team to get it authenticated but it would have taken them a few day to reply since they are finishing up the Paris show.

Volvic I do not disagree completely but I do know that the primary galleries that represent him do not offer this service either. Its potentially a huge problem going forward depending on the level of success he obtains.
I have looked to buy originals on the secondary market before most of which if not all do not have paperwork (early works admittedly) but in the end have either taken a risk after a combination of the following or simply declined to buy.
1. Listening to the provenance the seller can offer (anecdotal)
2. Through studying the work
3. Reviewing historical literature
4. Reviewing images from shows/books
For this reason I do think its a shame that Brian and his team (galleries) do not offer this type of service. I would say that for recent works sold they probably have some sort of paperwork and the primary galleries will no doubt authentic works they have sold.
It has to be said if paperwork provenance is you thing no one does it as good as PC with unique protected serial numbers and registered owners.

Thanks but I'm more interested in how I can tell not specifically on those two but in general. What to look for, what paper was used, where were they issued, signed, unsigned, numbered any differences between the real and fake ones. Stuff like that.
