The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by wazandy on Oct 11, 2007 8:38:58 GMT 1, I think we all agree that the people on this board genuinely love Banksy's work. Most of us have got prints, rare or otherwise, and it would be safe to say that most of us are collecting them simply because they're wonderful - not for instant sale.
Unfortunately I have a mate in the UK (I'm in AUS) who's heard from reliable sources that the ticket touts who make getting into concerts a nightmare have finally cottoned on to the Banksy 'get rich quick' capability.
We all saw how much 'morons' went up in value after only a few months.
My biggest fear is is a total bombardment of POW on release, only to find those prints within hours on ebay.
There MUST be some way that a fixed number of prints can be allocated to genuine collectors, people who simply want to hang these things.
God knows how it could be arranged, but I've had too many ebay conversations with genuinely aggressive print owners who bought them simply to sell them for an instant profit.
I know it's free trade, I know sometimes we have to sell a beloved print for mortgage reasons / new car - you know the score.
I just can't help feeling that Banksy / POW's generosity in releasing signed prints for six hundred quid is being totally hijacked by these bastards, and people who've followed his work for years (I bought my first six years ago) simply can't get a look in.
Sorry, just ranting.
Besides, by the time I get up in Sydney the POW releases will all have gone anyway.
Bummer eh?

funny handshakes perhaps?
the truth is, it's impossible for artists/print houses and/or galleries to tell a flipper from a true collector.
perhaps the question should be "how can you stop the flipping?" If the outlet for flipped prints was quashed i.e. ebay, then it would be a lot harder to easily flip prints, but in all honesty, is that really in our interests?

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by plymman on Oct 11, 2007 10:54:22 GMT 1, I reckon POW should just release it in dribs and drabs over a period of a few weeks, 10 one day, 20 a few days later etc... then it's more luck of the draw (rather than quickest off the blocks) and those folks that check the sites religiously (POW, SOS etc...) will have more chance of picking one up.
Thats what I think anyway............

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by scavos on Oct 11, 2007 11:50:03 GMT 1, It's all about the f5!! Hey wazandy - cheers for your post; I feel your pain. It may seem defeatest but I'm resigned to the fact that there really is little to be done about the bun fight other than to try your level best to be in it.
If possible, try enjoying that f5 action and maybe consider trying new ways of hitting that little key. I got lucky with some 'next day combined nose and toe f5 action' with the latest Micallef release as they popped up.
Whilst I'm not claiming there's a link to my success and my chosen form of said f5 action it does seem to be a remarkable coincidence. I'd previously plumbed for the 'straight index finger form of f5 attack' with Banksy and Micallef without success.
For obvious reasons I will not divuldge the details of my next form of assault but I'm in discussion with Microsoft consultants, Mr Dyson, Ben & Jerry (of ice-cream fame), a mental health specialist and an electric toothbrush.
Although they haven't got back to me yet, I am confident that between us as a 'team' we can at least stand as much chance as anyone else in bagging me a Banksy badboy. As long as I wake up in time, have my computer on, am not working/socialising/making sweet and gentle love and can get into the desired combat position. Like a well oiled machine. Does anyone know if talcum powder helps stop night vision goggles from chaffing?
On a more lighthearted note I'd perhaps get a mate over here in Blighty who would be kind enough to call you if he/she hears anything. What the hey - the sun's shining out there now that fog has cleared - drop me a pm wazandy with your oz landline and I'll bell you when I hear anything. Don't ask me to share my latest f5 action plan though cos that's just for me and the 'team' to know....innit.

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by Mobu on Oct 11, 2007 12:23:20 GMT 1, nothing we can do guys but pray that we are somewhere near the computer when they get released... POW is a business and don't probably care who buys it, whether they are flippers or collectors. This is the just the way it is, the sooner everyone realizes this, the better...
I am a collector myself, but flippers dont really bother me so much anymore... as long as I get the print I love, that is all that matters.

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by funster on Oct 11, 2007 12:45:57 GMT 1, I really can't see why they can't release loads of them. Like Moritz says POW are a business, but surely it's good business sense to make more??-
Number Produced = 300 Price = ยฃ400 Total Income = ยฃ120,000 Production Cost = ยฃ6000 (ยฃ20 per print (I could be way out)) Total Profit = ยฃ114,000
But if production numbers differed:
Number Produced = 1500 Price = ยฃ200 Total Income = ยฃ300,000 Production Cost = ยฃ30,000 (ยฃ20 per print (I could be way out)) Total Profit = ยฃ270,000
;D

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by gilbaron on Oct 11, 2007 15:42:52 GMT 1, perhaps we need a good old fashioned phone tree. Used to do it for parties in high school, everyone lists their numbers, if anyone gets wind of the onsale call 3-5 people on the list while the f5 refresh goes through, and they do the same and so on down the tree, at least it increases our collective chances at success. I'd rather lose the bun fight to a real fan from the forum than some chucklehead out to make a quick $$$.

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by Mobu on Oct 11, 2007 18:18:18 GMT 1, I noticed that the POW print is slightly different than the LA one. I know its obvious about paper, blah blah, but I noticed that the hunter on the far right, has a little tommahawk in his hand. In the LA version he just has a knife like object.. maybe I am wrong but that is what I noticed. I must say I prefer the Tommahawk. Mo

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by veralynn on Oct 11, 2007 20:57:46 GMT 1, Lets assume there's 600 prints available? Auction them, simple. It would stop the flippers, baggers, investors whatever you like to call them/us. It might mean true 'fans' can no longer afford it but if you're a true fan the probablity is you've already got some work. I can't have my family portraits done by Mario Testino so I have to make do with a bloke who knows a bloke....I dont think raffle is the way forward either.

The new Banksy print. What can we do?, by goodbyekitty on Oct 12, 2007 12:10:03 GMT 1, I think (as everyone is saying!) it's a really difficult one. I've only been buying pretty things for my walls for only a year now and things have changed in that time.
It's hard to decide about who the 'real collectors/fans' are, if sales were to go down that route. Am I less worthy than someone who has 20 prints compared to my 7 to own a new Banksy? Or am I more of a 'collector' compared to someone who owns 2? What would be the way to decide?
Maybe a GCSE Collecting Art exam?
Money, space and taste control what we buy and this is different to everyone out there. I don't think these things should be used to decide who the 'true fans' are. My worry is that people trying to pick up on the flippers could be picking up on new collectors/fans, it's a tricky time to be new to this game.
Much love.
PS Sorry if I've strayed on the topic, was just being brave and posting my ranting thoughts!
