HIRST MARKET DOWN 30% V. INTERESTING READ, by Dr Plip on Nov 23, 2012 23:56:17 GMT 1, I loved the article. The crazy, crazy world of big money. I had no idea that he literally had a factory. Must be an interesting place to work.

HIRST MARKET DOWN 30% V. INTERESTING READ, by freakinstyle on Nov 24, 2012 16:03:30 GMT 1, The 30% down doesn't really surprise me. Most works were sold just before the economic misery. His shark was sold to a hedge fund manager, how typical for that time. I really wouldn't buy a dot painting when there are so many around and not even painted by himself. Probably cheaper to buy the wallpaper and ask for an autograph on it.
He has made some unique interesting works and was clever enough to squeeze out every penny out of those ideas, by repeating it a lot, hiring people, hyping and good timing. Things I personally don't want to associate with art.

I assumed he commissioned stuff, like a regular artist.

I think this is becoming more regular for the unregular popular artists. Andy Warhol was famous for it, but there are more big names that have done it. And even if they are not known about having a 'factory' they still have minions running around in the form of apprenticeships. It is not even something of the last 40 years. Art is just business and if it grows, they need help to do more. But it becomes a slippery slope from there in terms of authenticity and uniqueness. Where they used to employ people to do the physical work, some artists even employ new talents for ideas. That's where the definitely cross the line for me or just replicating the same idea.
Another interesting reading about overpriced.... all 3 names have employed people big time to do their work:

He does this too, some friends of mine in the prop making / special effects business have created several of his pieces over the years.

HIRST MARKET DOWN 30% V. INTERESTING READ, by naughtyshorty on Nov 26, 2012 11:24:20 GMT 1, Good article.
I personally don't mind on the assistant debate - as it's been said its happened for generations with some of the greatest classical artist. I find it interesting and amusing to watch brainwash do it so publicly and blatantly and how he uses it almost as a marketing ploy.
Speaking professionally, art does not conform to traditional valuation principles which it makes it a pretty fascinating thing to observe.
Good article.

Don't mind it too, until both idea and creation is taken over by employees and the artist just puts his/her name under it. I like people to get acknowledged for their efforts and not for someone who has made great pieces to become lazy and walk away with it.
