Caring/Displaying Old Books, by Phear Loathing on Nov 27, 2012 15:28:01 GMT 1, My CEO collects incredibly old/expensive books. He has come to me asking for advice on handling/storing/displaying/preserving ect as I am the go to guy for this stuff with his art collection.
However, I am not quit sure what to tell him. Surely someone has experience here?
Also, is there a database anyone is aware of that would give rough estimates of values of these books? He buys them mainly at auction, but is sometimes unsure of the true value. He just doesn't want to make stupid buys.
Thanks in advance if anyone can give some advice!
PS I don't think he wants to make acrylic boxes for all the books, he has tons of them.

Caring/Displaying Old Books, by sanchorockin78 on Nov 27, 2012 17:10:38 GMT 1, Harringtons ( peterharrington.co.uk / harringtonbooks.co.uk ) can usually give quotes on old and rare but i am not sure what level of 'Old & Rare' your CEO is at! - perhaps Bonhams too as they deal in these.

Those libraries are just nuts! I didn't spot any in the photos but I love those fixed ladders that slide along the book shelves. Don't know why - but I just love them.

Me too! I expect because I imagine you can stand at the top and zoom round on them. Big kid at heart!

Caring/Displaying Old Books, by Deleted on Nov 27, 2012 20:03:38 GMT 1, Make space for all the special ones...
Surely it's worth contacting the British Museum/Library... staff at the Norman Foster covered 'Reading Room' at British Museum Great Russell Street might help...?
As a side note... the Natural History Museum were great when I needed a recipe for a water soluble putty to help me cast a human skull dug up in road works in Chelmsford.
