This will be my 7th year in a row @ Basel, truth be told i like the fair in Basel itself rather than the miami fair. the Miami fair has some great work, over 15 satellite fairs, and a lot to do but it also has all the BS in the art market you have grown to hate. everything is red rope, exclusive, etc...

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by sin on Sept 30, 2014 16:46:02 GMT 1, Went there for the 1st time last year... sin said it all, I'm sure you'll have a blast ! I brought back a nice Maya Hayuk painting on wood, well worth the trip just for itself ;-) Which gallery/fair showed her there? That Maya work was probably at the Wynwood Walls exhibit. I haven't heard what they have planned yet this year, but they have a new art director so it will be interesting in any case.

There are a few galleries listed as showing her at Pulse at least this year (just search the directory by any artist).
On a side note, will also be making it out there again this year. Preparing to be overwhelmed yet again with art.

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by turnsintoashes on Sept 30, 2014 19:58:11 GMT 1, I went to my first Basel last year and it was a great experience, even though I was totally burnt out and overwhelmed by the end of the week. I'll probably be there Tues-Fri this year. I didn't do any of the partying that seems to be part of the experience though.
You should visit the main fair once and early in the week...I went on Saturday last year and it was extremely busy to the point of annoyance. You'll see a lot of museum type pieces. I witnessed two people almost knock over the same Calder sculpture in a span of a couple minutes, it was that crowded. The gallerists were panicking.
Art Miami/Context were great I thought, along with Scope and Pulse. Scope/Pulse will be more your speed if you're into the art talked about on this board. I heard there were great things at Untitled and Design Miami, but didn't get a chance to go there. NADA is worth going to also. (it's free) I've heard about a super cool week long thing happening in Wynwood this year with a killer group show, so keep your eye out for that. Lots of great artists involved.

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by dreadnatty on Oct 18, 2014 15:26:15 GMT 1, Hi all. A friend of mine, Robert William de los Rios, who is behind the website Wynwood Map(http://www.wynwoodmap.com) - [an ongoing archival project that seeks to centralize and catalogue street art murals and installations in Miami's Wynwood art district and its surrounding areas] sent me this asking if I could reach out to forum members for their help to raise $$$$ for a middle school program in the Wynwood section of Miami(Art District):
โI went to Jose De Diego Middle School, in Wynwood, about 6 months back, to try + get their walls for Basel. They're massive walls, + there are tons of them at the school, so I figured it'd be worth a shot asking for them, since I have a lot of artists coming down for Basel, looking for fresh canvas to paint on. What transpired in that original meeting, changed everything I was planning on doing this year, + possibly for the next few years.
The principal gave me a tour of the school, introducing me to some students, teachers, staff, + the school in general. Saw some classrooms, what textbooks they used, etc. art classroom, with everything needed, to start. A music room with 20 brand new keyboards, + a grand piano. Was off that these keyboards had an inch of dust on them. Then, I was hit with a bombshell.....5 years ago, due to funds being cut, they lost their Art + Music teachers, so they haven't been able to provide neither Art, not Music class, for any student, in 5 years. They simply don't have the money/funding. So basically, the only middle school in one of the largest art communities on the planet, one of THE Meccas for street art, has no Art/Music program. As somebody who loves this city with all of my being, I found that unacceptable. I can't imagine being a child (ranges 11-15), walking to school, seeing all this amazing artwork, then having no outlet, or option, to do the same at school.
That has to change, + myself, along with my partner Patrick, are going to change that, one way or the other. I am organizing for some of the greatest artists I know, to come + paint the school walls. Inside + out. We're searching for sponsors to be able to secure a high profile music act, to throw an event at the school, theSaturday of Basel (December 6th), on top of the artists painting (around 35 total. The list on the PDF only shows a few who we've confirmed. Others who have confirmed who aren't on that list, Martin Whatson, Dot Dot Dot, + quite a few more). Every single penny we receive for this, whether it be by artists themselves selling a print for this project, auctions, art sales, raffles, sponsors, etc., goes directly to the school, so they can pay for full time teachers, to have an Art + Music program. Every single cent.
Who are we, if we don't make our homes/hometowns better, ourselves? Who are we, if we don't take care of our future generations? Who are we, if we don't give them every single option they deserve to have?
What I'm asking you for help with, is whatever you can think of to help us with this project, would be tremendous. Media coverage, friends in influential art mags, galleries, websites, journalism, paint sponsors, art funding programs, even you yourself mentioning it on any media you decide to, would be huge. There's no minimum/maximum anybody can do, + nobody has any obligation to do anything. I just want you, or anybody who believes in something like this, to do whatever you can, to help us reach our goal.....to get these kids that program they so desperately want. I've met these kids. I know them. I've met their parents. They deserve this, + Wynwood being one of the most important places in the world for Art, who better to get involved, than the artists who make up that world wide art community, + the people who call this place home.
D*Face is painting his first ever wall in Miami, at the school, + he's just 1 person. Every artist involved couldn't be happier/prouder, to contribute to this cause. I would love for you to help us out, in any way/shape/form, even if it's just a phone call to a friend, who you think can help us out in any way."

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by dreadnatty on Oct 24, 2014 0:58:13 GMT 1, An article in HuffPo on the fundraising project: www.huffingtonpost.com/jj-colagrande/wynwood-map-and-wada-to-transform-school_b_6017826.html?utm_hp_ref=miami&ir=Miami
Wynwood Map and WADA to Transform School With Monster Art Basel Project
It starts with this irony: Wynwood's middle school doesn't have an art department.
Due to budget restraints it was eliminated.
For that matter, there's no music program either.
Jose De Diego Middle School is located at 3100 NW 5th Ave, on the cusp, but basically in Wynwood. Over 600 kids, grade 6-8, ages 11-14, are being denied access to the arts because there's no money to hire a teacher. It wasn't always like this. There's a room at the school filled with 20 Kawasaki keyboards and grand pianos collecting dust. There are closets filled with art supplies. How can the most burgeoning art neighborhood on the planet have public schools that don't teach art or music?
This is the question Patrick Walsh and Robert de los Rios asked themselves. Mr. Walsh is the director of WADA, the Wynwood Art District Association, and Mr. de los Rios operates Wynwood Map, a website and app chronicling the ever-changing art in the area. If Wynwood is truly an outdoor museum, these two dudes are its greatest docents. They do things not for money but because they care about the hood.
They understand the tragic irony.
Imagine you're a student at JDD Middle; you're surrounded by warehouses and walls painted in the most vivid ways imaginable, constructed by the world's most treasured and talented artists; your schoolyard is literally in the world's largest outdoor museum yet you can't learn how to paint or draw in school. Talk about being on the outside looking in. Talk about the gentrification of the future. It's not acceptable. It's a crime that an art neighborhood has public schools without art departments.
What needs remembering, almost constantly, is that the residents of Wynwood and its surrounding neighborhoods -- Edgewater, Allapattah, Brownsville, Overtown -- are poor minorities. Eighty-nine percent of students at JDD Middle are eligible for free meals. In 2014, a family of two needs to make an annual income below $20,449 to be eligible for free meals. Fifty-three percent are Hispanic, and 46 percent are black; these students and their families need to feel included in their own neighborhood. They need to be a part of what's going on and they need access to an education.
The event being planned for JDD Middle during Art Basel is big and very inclusive. It starts, of course, with art. The school itself will be used as a venue. Starting around November 25, the walls of the school will be painted by an army of international and local artists. We're talking big name artists like David Walker, Pixelpancho, Anthony Lister, RYCA, D*Face and over 30 more confirmed. There will be a concert on December 6 featuring an internationally popular musician. There will be a raffle for a chance to win art and merchandise. Other artists may donate pieces and if they do they will be sold privately. It only takes one or two pieces from some of these guys to generate hundreds of thousands (buzz is some big dogs know about this project and approve). In addition, the rest of the community is lending a hand. Gallerias like Robert Fontaine, Gregg Sheinbaum and Anthony Spinello are paying for the lifts so their artists can work. Liquitex is donating the paint. This is the beginning. It's just coming together. The goal is to raise $500,000 with all proceeds going to the school to hire teachers. And their vision goes beyond this school with the premise that this "template" could potentially be applied at other schools.
Wish this project the best.
This is awesome and it's totally grassroots community engagement.
Coming soon, students at JDD will be bragging because their facilities are getting a serious makeover that might just make them the coolest looking middle school on the planet. Just imagine how these walls will look after Art Basel, only a few weeks away.

Been trying to reach you for over a week, sir. Coming up on crunch time, so need to know if we can count on your help. Please call me, asap.

Visit MIAMI ๐บ๐ฒ Street Art, Galleries, Events, by robertskran on Nov 13, 2014 3:25:02 GMT 1, After seeing Ahol painting the past couple of days, one of the students comes up to us + says,
"I got my mom to buy me some spray paint!"
+ today, after school, this 7th grader (13 years old) comes up to me with the principal + tells me,
"Sir, I've been saving up some money, so I'd like to donate my $100 dollars for the project!"
Of course. We politely declined, so his next step is to come up to me, pat me on the back + say,
"Well, whenever you guys need help, I'm ready!"
