Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by leumasdarnley on Dec 4, 2011 14:22:50 GMT 1, I imagine this print is Banksy erring on the side of political correctness. Had it had a riot image most of the peaceful living folk in Tottenham, Croydon and thereabouts would quite likely want to hang him should they know what he looked like. A bit sheepish he may have become with his added millions but stupid he is not. Really? You think Banksy has chosen this print to be politically correct? You honestly believe that any of the local residents affected by the riots would give a fu ck about what image Banksy produces in his latest print release?
Banksy might be looking at a political career in the future and needs to respect the will of the people. Days of depicting the queen sitting on the face of another girl are gone. No more painting on animals or inflatable Guantanamo bay detainee's in Disney. Wouldn't dare make fun of the US's military these days or dream of designating a riot area.......... right. This in my opinion is a very personal piece I'm not going to hype it up but there is more than a Gorilla with a purple glitter mask here.

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by jellya on Dec 4, 2011 15:09:09 GMT 1, It's my deluded thinking brought on by a lack of sleep and a desire to own, but would POW be considering a timed release for this with March giving them enough time to print? That'd be cool, since it would mean I'd actually be able to get a Banksy print. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's possible for them to make enough prints between now and march to meet the run size that would result from a Banksy timed release ;D
That would be true. I was thinking a shorter timed release of about an hour or two keeping them busy til March. Now that I've seen there are a few prints scheduled for later the less I think they're doing anything. But you never know...

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by vangolf on Dec 4, 2011 18:12:32 GMT 1, Great post. Completely agree.
I've been a bit 'meh' about releases since the LA show. Quite liked last years (despite finding the gimmick of multi colourways a bit tedious), though I thought Doughnuts and NBG were dull, and I've never been taken with the aesthetics of VLH or Nola (her head really is far too large)! All subjective of course, but personally I could see this one on my wall. Of course, the chances of that happening are slim but we can all dream. [/quote]
I do not agree (i.e., each to their own). I used to really like Banksy because he was fresh, original and most importantly effective using minimal images, colours, scenarios, etc. GWB, Laugh Now, LIITA, HW are amazing images and were great because they were lifted from the "street" and put to print. When I see releases like donuts, NBG and the like, I don't see the magic what was early Banksy. No doubt he and these newer pieces may still serve as a great investment, but as for art and his legacy, I believe they will be a long term detriment.
Banksy reminds me of U2 in this respect. Both have made some incredible art over their careers, both got a little drunk on their own commercialism, which lead to the making an inferior product. U2 is an alltime great band, but I change the station now when they come.

Agree with your first paragraph, but not the second. Great bands are innovative and influential.

I don't mind it either, but it is not a print, iconic or street art. Put another way, his "brand" was built on type of specific type of image and communication style (stencil graffiti often with clever irony). He has progressed from this (as all artists must), but imho what he has progressed (regressed?) to is not helping his brand (maybe by design). Maybe I'm an old dinosaur but I see these new prints as college dorm room posters and not something that would have longevity on my walls. For the money these go for I want longevity and something that I consider "art".
I should also clarify that I do not love U2, but judging by ticket sales of their umpteenth world tour, I am in the minority.

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by digitalkid on Dec 4, 2011 22:53:16 GMT 1, What makes you doubt their march 2012 date? They put it in print. Did they not? Why would they put it in ink as 2012 and then just release it on a larf. Wouldnt that just diminish their credibility? What does an organization have to gain from running mis-information on their patrons?
I'm guessing you haven't known POW for more than a few years?

Never doubt POW's ability to pull something out of the hat
art happenings like Bethlehem make up for the low points

You wont know anything until February, March or until its sold out. Nothing inbetween.
IF theres a queue, the only reasonable chance you have of scoring one is if you are already in London and basically have a life that can be dropped immediately.
POW change they way they release Banksy often. The edition size, colours available, signed/unsigned also change often.
The one thing that is constant is that the price from source will be between ยฃ450-ยฃ700 and will be worth a couple of thousand.
Thats why everyone goes mental.

I bet anyone anyone any amount of money that POW drops this print in the heart of Africa and Dian Fossey is personally handing the prints to the lucky 184 that can make it there alive. effing morons. Some of the dumbest sh!t i'ev ever seen or heard in my life for a piece of paper.

I love the "it's only a piece of paper" quote. It really is. Albeit we must admit it will be a valuable one for the lucky few who get one...
As an aside, isn't it being released in March? So what is all the speculation about now? I am sure we will all learn more in the fullness of time.

Banksy Gorilla Print Release - POW, by BK83 on Dec 6, 2011 17:16:55 GMT 1, Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this image put up on Banksy's homepage along with a witty quote when the Daily Mail did the expose on him?? ...what was the street piece? anyone have a link?? Was there some specific context? location etc?? Perhaps I'm missing something (maybe the POW pic is cropped) but this image on it's own says absolutely nothing... not that that is bad in itself, but unusual for Banksy
LOL

No decent print's released since Toxic Mary IMO, why can't we have another corker like Grin Reaper and give us all something to look forward to not getting!!
