Les Ballets de Faile, by AFR1KA on Jan 9, 2013 4:53:28 GMT 1, From the Huffington Post: "The artists have also created limited-edition works of art – 2-inch wood blocks hand-painted on all six sides _that will be handed out to each of the 5,000 audience members who attend two special performances, on Feb. 1 and May 29, where every seat in the house will go for $29. "The idea was to provide something you could take away from the ballet and use as a conversation piece to further push the conversation and the experience you had at the ballet," Miller said."

If anyone in NY is going, and can pick up a spare giveaway, I will be incredibly grateful, and can sort out some sort of art related swap with you. It's worth a try!! Fanks.
Still hoping a friendly NYer can help me out with this.....

Les Ballets de Faile, by Deleted on Jan 9, 2013 23:34:48 GMT 1, I know there's a hardcore of Faile investors so these comments won't go down well, the more I see of their work the less enamoured I become. These ballet pieces look like, well a search of some archives and then coloured in 'Faile style' harsh? Possibly.
They don't feel particularly delicate or nuanced, just heavily stylised hmmm I guess that's what Faile does? Maybe they'll become a tower,or a jigsaw, or a kite, or a statute, or a shoe and the medium will electrify it? Or possibly not.
I guess it's pretty and wall friendly if somewhat un- provocative / interesting which is enough for most?

Les Ballets de Faile, by twist65 on Jan 10, 2013 0:56:12 GMT 1, each to their own I guess, if provocative art floats your boat then I don't think Faile have ever ticked that box so not sure it can be levelled as a criticism. They were given the opportunity to work with NYCB on this project, who threw open their archives for them. Naturally they embraced this in their own way, using a visual language they've been developing for years rather than going off on a radical new stylistic tangent. I suppose it's quite a literal response to the brief but personally I think their work shows much more class and finesse than, say, if Shep or someone had been given the same opportunity.
I get the jigsaw/kite thing though and can see how blocks etc could be perceived as gimmicky. I've always seen it as Faile's way of exploring different media whilst retaining full control over their output, Personally i'd like to see a lot more artists personally create pretty much everything they sign their own name on. But i'd take a print or canvas over a puzzle box every time. I'm not an investor, have a few low end prints and am an unashamed fan, so am always excited to see some new Faile imagery.

Les Ballets de Faile, by chaserawr on Jan 10, 2013 1:05:17 GMT 1, I think Faile isn't in it for the fame, the money, the investors, the galleries. They just like to do what they love to do. I have so much more respect for them than all the comtemporary art game players out there. At the same time I wish they would push themselves as artists and continue to create and redefine themselves but for this opportunity with the ballet I think their blocks fit will with ballet and the imagery is great and colorful. I continue to enjoy my prints and I don't care if they go up or down in value.

Thankyou a well thought out response ... I suppose central to the critique would be the above, failes development seems non existent possibly even backward - the imagery feels less personalised or emotional than previous work. Provocative was possibly the wrong descriptor. I probably meant colder and less provoking of emotion.

Les Ballets de Faile, by AFR1KA on Jan 10, 2013 1:18:19 GMT 1, Personally I think Faile has done exactly what the NYC Ballet asked of them for this exhibit. Something that would help create interest within a younger demographic in the ballet. This image is a perfect example:
It merges both the downtown gritty feel of NYC and Brooklyn with the classic beauty of the ballerina; all while keeping the Faile feel of sexuality to it.
As a whole I think Faile has had both ups and downs over the past few years. Some of the Native American pieces just didn't do anything for me, but the block pieces I thought were amazing and a giant leap for them (especially since it was just the 2 Patricks at that point).
I wouldn't judge this exhibit to critically because it is a large commission by a very specific group. I am more interested to see what they have in store for us at the Perry Rubenstein show.

Les Ballets de Faile, by jp on Jan 10, 2013 4:51:04 GMT 1, I guess it's pretty and wall friendly if somewhat un- provocative / interesting which is enough for most?
How you view the pieces depends on who you are and your background (like most art really). For example, a young lesbian ballerina with tattoos may find the piece Afr1ka posted provocative AND interesting. They seem to have a thing for softcore lesbian imagery these days.
But to me none of their recent work has the same edge as the earlier work Faile released, especially between 06 and 08. I bought "Rampage" maybe 5 years ago and I haven't seen anything I wanted from them since. There is a political message in that piece that works very well with the boxing image. It can start a good conversation that goes in many directions depending on who you are talking to. I don't see that power with the new work. It just doesn't hit a nerve like some of the older work. At least not for me.

Buy some tickets and give the away in return for the art, surely its a small price to pay for a Faile 1off if you want it that bad ?! Im only guessing, but I presume this is what Speebe has done ?

Yes, I am more than happy to do that if anyone wants to. Or reimburse price of tickets already bought.

Smart move on his behalf. Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate and $50 for a Faile og is hardly speculating

Id buy them and then try to make a deal, probably got more chance than someone offering you the Failes for a price of a ticket.

Les Ballets de Faile, by jones27 on Jan 10, 2013 15:11:54 GMT 1, Anyone else thinking Failes imagery has lost its edge somewhat? It all feels a little safe, one dimensional and mundane. The wishy washy comic book stuff was always there but (back in the day) was more twisted with a more political realworld elements (chairman mao, ny references etc) There is no doubting their artistic skills but content (for me) is a bit lacking.

Yup... My initial plan was to contact friends in NYC who I thought would enjoy an evening at the ballet but they couldn't commit. So I offered them on here and thanks to shootagain's NYC connections we've managed to work something out that'll benefit us two in the UK... and his friends get the real treat of the performance.
I wish I could get there, and did look at the cost for the a long weekend flight + hotel but just couldn't justify the expense.
