£133 CUSTOMS CHARGE - ADVICE PLEASE!, by Ruggs on Jan 15, 2013 21:54:11 GMT 1, It's become apparent that myself and a number of other forum members will be liable for a £133 customs charge for Dolk 'Punk' and 'Pope' prints which are due to be delivered very soon from Japan. Can anyone help and advise why such a charge has been placed on these prints and is there anything that can be done to lessen the charge? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks!

£133 CUSTOMS CHARGE - ADVICE PLEASE!, by sohohoho on Jan 15, 2013 22:30:36 GMT 1, I'm not really sure why people get confused. The sender has obviously declared exactly what you paid so the charge is 20% of that + admin fee. You're never going to be charged 5% unless the sender specifies the correct jargon when describing the contents of the package. Basically, it all depends on the declared vale/description of contents.
For example: £300 (Punk) + £300 (Pope) + £20 (Shipping) = £620 / 100 x 20 = £124 + £8 (Admin Fee) = £132

£133 CUSTOMS CHARGE - ADVICE PLEASE!, by papilio on Jan 16, 2013 9:01:58 GMT 1, Quoting hubblebubble from another old thread: Point one... go to search2.hmrc.gov.uk/kb5/hmrc/forms/home.pageInput the form code BOR286 (that's a letter 'O', not a zero) and download the resulting (one page) form. It's very straightforward. Give as much info as you can and ensure you've saved customs forms that came on the packaging etc. The import code that our imports qualify for 5% VAT under is 9702 00 00 - limited edition print hand pulled by the artist in limited numbers. Specify the print run etc. That should help.
I wonder if this is some kind of EU/WTO/WHATNOT rules. Those are the same numbers as for Norway (Tolltariffens kapittel 97, English version).
That info should really be locked at the top of this forum - could save a lot of people a lot of money!
If these are universal numbers, it definately should. And everybody shipping prints should note these numbers on the VAT declaration, just in case.

£133 CUSTOMS CHARGE - ADVICE PLEASE!, by fielder on Jan 16, 2013 15:21:24 GMT 1, I always put in a claim for a partial refund. Tell them it's a limited edition hand pulled art print and you have been informed the commodity code is 4911910090. You then have to wait a long time and then (hopefully) they will send you a cheque for the difference.

It would help if you were a bit more specific than 4911910090.
- Pictures, collages and similar decorative plaques, paintings and drawings, executed entirely by hand by the artist, other than plans and drawings for architectural, engineering, industrial, commercial, topographical or similar purposes, hand-decorated manufactured articles, theatrical scenery, studio back cloths or the like of painted canvas (Tariff heading 9701).
- Original engravings, prints and lithographs, being impressions produced in limited numbers directly in black and white or in colour of one or several plates executed entirely by hand by the artist, irrespective of the process or of the material employed by him, but not including any mechanical or photomechanical process
(Tariff code 9702 00 00).

£133 CUSTOMS CHARGE - ADVICE PLEASE!, by kel on Jan 16, 2013 15:51:19 GMT 1, Commodity Codes Link
www.uktradeinfo.com/TradeTools/ICN/Pages/ICNSearch.aspx
Problem is if it has been shipped under the specific commodity code stating on the invoice. It can be very difficult to have it adjusted.
You will find 49119100 under section X
