KAWS RIP OriginalFake?!, by leumasdarnley on Jan 18, 2013 3:13:20 GMT 1, Via facebook
May 2013 marks the seventh year anniversary of OriginalFake, and it is at this time that Medicom Toy and I have chosen to close the shop and company. It's been an amazing opportunity to work with Medicom Toy on this project as well as working with Masamichi Katayama of Wonder Wall to create the interior of the shop and Konno of Nexus7 who's incredible talent really added sophistication to the clothing that we produced. I really want to thank the staff in production as well as in our shop. If you ever entered our shop you already know how awesome they are! I would also like to thank all the companies that collaborated with us, your friendship and support has always really meant a lot, and to everyone who has supported OriginalFake,THANK YOU! and I hope to see you all in the next chapter!

KAWS RIP OriginalFake?!, by brendan1985 on Jan 18, 2013 3:37:15 GMT 1, Looks like the boba fett will be the last toy we ever see released. I wonder if the amount of imitations had anything to do with this? I wonder if he will move onto producing more frequent print releases? I personally think it was a a good time to pull the pin, as we have all noticed the toy releases ( with exception of a few) were getting quite stale. I was always hanging out for a 4' chum or accomplice, but I will have to lay those thoughts to rest.

I hope this leads to some (not tons) more print releases.

KAWS RIP OriginalFake?!, by blobbydon on Jan 18, 2013 7:38:07 GMT 1, So the rumours was true... See that on Facebook this morning... I think it will be the end of the toys and he will concentrate more on the art work. Looking back over the last few years he has made some tack toys when really he didn't need to. Seems like he felt he needed to be releasing something very few months which made a few very weak releases. If he does I hope it's with bounty hunter again(are they still going) as I think they was the most original ones from the start.

its the clothing line and the store in tokyo, thats all. not the KAWSone website or the toy line.
just the brand / clothing label 'originalfake' and the store in tokyo.
there are more toys to come.... different colour ways in seated and astro

KAWS RIP OriginalFake?!, by bonesy on Jan 18, 2013 12:05:42 GMT 1, This is healthy timing, bit overdue if anything. I think we'll see less toys and he'll be spending more time on his fine art stuff. I don't see prints becoming any more frequent because of this either. Prints weren't a big focus before OF and they won't advance his career anymore at this point- which is the point here I think.

KAWS RIP OriginalFake?!, by Happy Shopper on Jan 18, 2013 12:32:32 GMT 1, I wonder if the constant release of sub standard toys and commercial tie-ins was just to fund the store !? Hopefully with less overheads he can just release what he wants at a slower pace. (Which I think is also the problem with Shepard Fairey and Obey!! Prints to fund the loss making company!)
I actually wonder whether the expected colour ways for Astroboy (which I doubt anyway) and Resting Place will come out now, as they were branded Original Fake ??

From Kidrobot FB :
Hi all,
There has been rumor and speculation about the future of our Kidrobot London store, and the impact this may have on the vinyl scene on this side of the ocean. We regret to say that we are indeed closing down. This January will be our last month of trading at 19 Earlham Street. We have struggled to approach this issue delicately, as we know a lot of you have come through the store over the past few months and have raised the concern with us. We understand your concerns with what this means for our little tight knit community with the store closing down, as this impacts not just our artist friends, but those who enjoy the Kidrobot brand for what it is and what it stands for.
The Kidrobot brand is still going strong. It is just our store in London being impacted.
Firstly to our brilliant customers/fans; Thank you for your custom over the past 3 1/2 years. We here at Kidrobot London have loved getting the chance to know you all. Thank you for sharing your collections with us, your passions, and bantering about how annoying flocked toys are to keep. Many of you have become more than customers, weโre happy to be able to call you friends.
Secondly To our artist friends; Thanks for all your support over the years, be it with shows, customs or just coming to hang out. We have watched many of you grow and have enjoyed watching you all making your mark with your amazing customs and art. We still get little tingles down our spines when we see your names amongst the heavy hitters in our scene. Thank you for sharing your passion with us!
Thirdly and on a personal note; Thanks to the ragtag bunch of misfits and delinquents that were the Kidrobot London staff (present and past). Iโll miss coming into work each day and seeing you guys and gals. You were the best make shift family anyone could ask for.
Letโs keep our little toy community spirit strong, and growing. Why not share with us your favorite moments of Kidrobot London, We'll start.
Our fondest moment here at Kidrobot London is meeting you all. It wasnโt about the vinyl, it was about the people. You all rock.
Much love and big up the UK designer toy scene. the Kidrobot London Crew.

I agree. The last few seasons haven't been the best for OF and I feel all this product cheapens his name. It's expensive stuff and a lot of it ends up being reduced which doesn't look good. It doesn't say he's parting company with Medicom so I expect they will continue to produce vinyl figures together. I don't know if you've noticed but OF hasn't featured on a vinyl figure or it's packaging for a while now so maybe it was all part of the plan.

Read it properly?
Its his clothing line only and the store, the toys will still be released. the clothing line always sucked anyway so this is a good sign that brian is trimming the fat on his empire, onwards and upwards.
