PM'ing offers, by nickc on Oct 26, 2007 15:04:42 GMT 1, Ok, the couple of glasses of wine I just had over lunch may have something to do with this thread but am I the only one that gets annoyed with the phrase "PM Offers"? It really puts me off buying pieces. Maybe I'm from the old school in that I just like to see a price. If I agree with it and want the piece then I'll pay it. If I think it's overpriced then I will wait for another. Surely everyone who has a piece they want to sell on the forum must have an idea of what they want to get for it. If they don't then stick it up on the 'bay on an unreserved and see what it goes for.
I know this is a minor rant but this is becoming one of the bugbears of my life at the moment.
Friday rant over.

PM'ing offers, by pezlow on Oct 26, 2007 15:10:15 GMT 1, My own experience is that it is pretty hard to sell stuff on here. I've been mucked around quite a lot selling stuff (even when it has been at cost price) and so can understand seller's reticence. Also I guarantee if you are a seller and you put up a price that is reasonable and below what the ebay price would be you will still be mucked around...

Its also an offer and provides both sides to come to an agreement without others being privvy to how much was or wasnt paid. It also shows the seller is flexible with their pricing and will accept anything within a range. As Perry said, set prices make it no more easier than offers.

Bugs the hell out of me Nick, had a confirmed swap agreed twice in the last 2 weeks with someone, only for them to back out twice and go silent. Followed by them to then go onto the light side and offer the same print up again for swap, timewasting sod, refuses to answer mail etc.... Honour aint what it used to be. At least I know nothing has happened to them, as they are posting on here today

You are right, I have had lots of good experiences as well, more buying than selling though. The trade with your good self was perfect if I may say so.

PM'ing offers, by nickc on Oct 26, 2007 15:43:57 GMT 1, Although I've never bought on the forum I have often PM'd people asking what they would like for whatever it is they are selling. Only on one occasion (and that was someone late last night) did they say what they were looking for. Every other time, the response has been, "make me an offer". I find in all walks of life (and this is coming from someone who negotiates for a living) it's best to have a starting point for negotiation. If they reply saying "200 quid" and I think it's worth 175 I will say so and they would prob take it. I bet that if I offered 175 straight off though they would say No. Infuriating.

PM'ing offers, by pezlow on Oct 26, 2007 16:12:28 GMT 1, I think in reality it is that both sides are reluctant to start the negotiating ball rolling. You are reluctant to name your first offer and he is reluctant to name his price. I don't think it is any different really.
When I sell stuff I try really hard not to rip people off. I quote them a price that I think is below what the piece is actually worth on ebay and almost invariably they come back trying to haggle it down further.
Equally when I buy stuff I like to name a price I think it is worth and rarely go above that price. I will try and name a fair price that I think is what the item would fetch on ebay. Again people try and haggle you up.
Having said that there are a number of people on here who I have traded with who are not like this. If someone offers me something at a fair price (like for example bombhugger and ABC to name two) then I will just accept that price because I know it is fair.

PM'ing offers, by craigf on Oct 26, 2007 16:40:03 GMT 1, I have bought or traded a few pieces on here over the last few months and have found the ones that have gone through have gone really well as there was open dialogue re the price. It is however sometimes hard to know what to ask or offer for a piece so I appreciate getting that starting point can be a problem if there is not a clear market value for the piece.
Big thanks for the guys on here I have traded with, the pieces are either already on the wall or soon on their way to be

PM'ing offers, by lesbianwednesdays on Oct 26, 2007 17:00:02 GMT 1, it's hard when there hasn't been much activity on the relavent item for a while.
i have hewlett's the hick, now say i wanted to sell that i'd say offers via pm only please. i want offers, if someone like yourself doesn't feel comfortable making an offer then don't get in touch, simple. sometimes it's hard to quantify 'current' market value, even on pieces that are regularly being sold, if values are rising you ask for offers, if they are falling you ask for offers. so if my hewlett was going, i'd have to ask for offers or sell via ebay, i'd rather it went to someone on here but if i had no takers i'd have no choice.
also, sometimes the highest offer isn't the one i'd choose. a lot depends on how the deal would be concluded and it's worth selling lower and having a conveniant sale than holding out for the dollar only to have headaches.
i've bought and sold 5 times i think now on this and the other forum and have had nothing but pleasurable experiences. i've tried negotiating trades/swaps too but that can be a little difficult to agree on.
on the whole, i'm more than happy the way things are done privately, it's no one else's business expect the buyer and seller. just because it's in your professional nature to get the best available price doesn't mean we should bow to that, after all most people want what's best for them?
have you had a lot of negative negotiations on here nickc? although you don't like the phrase 'pm offer's' if you did, stating what you want to pay, less say 15/20% then you could still work a deal. no?
each to his own i suppose.

You usually make more and you avoid be burned at the stake (& negged) for selling something.

PM'ing offers, by RBK on Oct 26, 2007 19:44:51 GMT 1, Why thank you Stuey! I was just commenting on the PM'ing offers thread.
I agree it is annoying when people request you 'make an offer' but a lot of the times it is because these sellers aren't dying to get rid of something and only will do so when the price is right.
